Looks so beautiful ❤️
Thanks!
This was so helpful. Thank you so much! ❤
So so glad to hear that!!
This is a great review! Thank you so much!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Thankyou, i wish i’d found this first before watching hours of things that just confused me more! I have a question tho: roughly how long should it take before i start to produce something that isn’t awful? I’ve been doing exercises and tracing lettering for maybe 15-30 minutes a day for about three weeks, and although i can trace beautifully, as soon as i have just guidelines on the page my consistency of size and shape goes right out the window. I’m starting to wonder if i just don’t have what it takes 😢
So glad the video was helpful! I don't really have a time frame for how long it takes because for one thing, everyone is different. How we learn and how long it takes is different. But it's normal for it to take at least several months for you to feel confident doing calligraphy on your own, without tracing guides. You are practicing way more consistently than I ever practiced when I was learning calligraphy, and it sounds like you're already doing very well! I did not practice the basics much when I was new to all this :) So here's what I would say: don't try to stop tracing until you feel ready. There's absolutely nothing wrong with tracing. It's the best way to learn and build your confidence. That's not to say that you shouldn't still practice some without tracing, to push yourself, but there's no point in trying to write without guides if you're not ready. When you DO practice the strokes on your own, don't expect them to look like a copy and paste of the traceable examples... yours don't need to be identical and perfect like the printed guides because that's not realistic. Imperfections are 100% okay and normal. It's all a gradual process - each day you practice, you're building muscle memory in your hand. The more you build the muscle memory, the more it will slowly become almost like second nature. It all happens gradually, maybe without you even noticing, and you'll probably slowly transition from tracing to starting to do more on your own as you feel comfortable. All your practice is going to pay off. One day you'll realize this feels easy compared to what it used to. Way to go for practicing so consistently - that's not easy to do but you're staying committed! 🙌
@byheidigrace thankyou for such a lot of help and encouragement, that is so kind of you! I'd got a bit discouraged tbh, so I'll definitely go back to focusing on the tracing and maybe the basic strokes for a bit.
Thank you for this video. The link for the Pentel pens is the same as the Tombow Fudenosuke...fyi
Whoops, just fixed that. Thanks for letting me know!
Please share the bible verses for this topics
@andreaaruna6345 Here's the list: You are strong - Psalm 18:2 • You are protected - Psalm 121:3 • You are beautiful - Psalm 139:14 • You are precious - 1 Corinthians 6:20 • You are chosen - 1 Peter 2:9 • You are forgiven - Psalm 103:12 • You are special - Ephesians 2:10 • You are important - 1 John 3:1 • You are cared for - Ephesians 3:17-19 • You are Mine - John 10:27-28 • You are lovely - 1 Peter 3:3-4 • You are a new creation - 2 Corinthians 5:17 • You are family - Ephesians 2:19 • You are loved - Romans 8:38-39
Superb
This has been so helpful. I am a complete beginner. Your video is the most helpful calligraphy video I have seen.
That means so much to me. Thank you!
Beautiful. I painted mine in a rectangle shape and that looks good too.
I love that idea!
Thanks very much!!!
you're welcome! Thanks for watching!
From Africa, thank you, very informative, love the tracing paper idea.
So glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching :)
My favourite thing to paint in the fall season is a gradient with a fall colour palette 🎨
great idea!
super
The color breakdown of the strokes is brilliant. So easy to pick out the basic strokes when presented in this manner. Thank you
So glad you found it helpful!
What's your favorite thing to paint in the fall season?
Helpful to know! Thks.
glad it was helpful!
I use the Tombow Fudenosuke hard-tip brush pens on Canson XL Marker paper for calligraphy.
Love that combo! Canson marker paper is great.
Is your book available by snail mail. Thank you
Unfortunately no, as of right now. When you buy the workbook you'll get instant access to it as a PDF download. Then you can either print it at home, or upload the file when you order from a printer. That's what I did; I got it printed and spiral-bound at OfficeMax :)
Finally it makes sense. Thank you thank you thank you
So so glad to hear that!!
Thanks for this. I’ve only used the Fude pens and have been deciding whether or not to get the Pentel ones, and just went for it. Just a few corrections though. It’s pronounced hoo-deh-no-skeh and the barrel of the hard tip pens are actually dark blue, while the soft tip pens are forest green. Holding them under a light enables the color to show more, then you won’t be able to unsee the blue and green barrels lol I hope this helps!
I didn't expect to be pronouncing Fudenosuke right, lol. And yes, I know the hard tip has a dark blue barrel and I have noticed the green undertones of the soft tip. In the video I was referring to the black ink color, not the color of the pens themselves.
@@byheidigrace Gotcha. Sorry about that. I misunderstood what you were saying.
Good teacher! 💫🍀🌹 Thank you very much🖋
Thank you!
Greetings. I really enjoyed your video. I am curious about the paper you used to demonstrate the Pentel vs Tombow Fudenosuke style pens. Which brand and type of paper did you use for this demonstration? Thank you in advance.
Glad you enjoyed the video! The paper I used in this video is Master's Touch marker paper from Hobby Lobby. (I don't know if you can get it anywhere else.) Another great marker paper I like to use is Canson XL marker paper.
Thank you great review. I’m a beginner so can wait to try the tomboy pens😊
So glad it was helpful. Have fun with your new pens!!
Thank you so much, this is very helpful 🙏 I really appreciate your explanation and breaking down all the strokes and letter parts, thank you so much for sharing this 🤩
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thank you for your comment!
Calming to watch the watercolour blending techniques, would like to learn paintbrush fundamentals from you. Which paintbrush did you use? All of these feel pretty lovely 🥰
Glad you enjoyed! I used a Princeton Neptune and Master's Touch round brushes
Your lettering is gorgeous!!
aw thank you!
Love your tips ! By the way, can I ask you what paper you are using ?
I used marker paper by Master's Touch (I get it at Hobby Lobby) and then some Superfine smooth cardstock, which I don't really like because it didn't end up being any smoother than other cardstock!
Which one of these watercolor exercises is your favorite? (mine is the last one :)
Agree! Last was is beautiful!
Thanks for sharing! The third and last one felt pretty 😍
Where I'm having the most difficulty is at the bottom of an o, or u, with the brush tip rolling from the left to right and up. I'm using a tombow hard tip and the upstroke doesn't go smoothly. I've tried soft tip too. I started out without pressure to get the movement first. I cant get it right and I'm getting discouraged. I've tried holding the pen differently, I'm using the correct paper. I don't see how I can get help without taking a video to show for someone to tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm going to get to the point where I'm so discouraged, not improving and just give up
Are you on Instagram? Feel free to DM me a video of it (@byheidigrace) and I can try to help! You might even like to switch to a pencil and practice with that. It really takes the pressure off and feels a lot smoother.
@@byheidigraceno I'm not, sorry
@@pamstrauch4372 well, I can't know exactly what you're dealing with without a picture/video. But everyone struggles with those areas at the bottom of letters so you're not alone. There are lots of things that could be involved... Sometimes it comes down to building muscle memory in your hand.
Great video and tips. Thanks so much!
glad it was helpful!
Good day! I love things like school and office supplies, such as pens, markers, crayons, erasers, sharpeners and notebooks. Best regards 😀
👍
Very helpful, Heidi!
I'm glad, thanks for watching :)
I accidentally bought a pack of hard tip Pentel fude pens once
I can not write like that 😢😢😢😢
If you ever want to learn how though, I have a video for that too :)
@@byheidigrace i have that pen pentel and tonbow but when i write i can't write like that 😢
All of them❤
oh yay! Thanks for watching :)
This is helpful to see. What helps me transition more smoothly during calligraphy practice is both going at a slower pace and warm up exercises before working on a project. Admire how you break down the elements of the switch from thin to thick, the explanation of what to identify is supportive. I feel that having a beginner’s mindset while practicing supports the confidence of the style. Thanks so much Heidi, gratefully appreciate these videos! Your calligraphy style is beautiful 😍
Oh yes! Warming up first is so helpful too. Good tips 👍
I finally printed out the free worksheets but then realized that none of the brush pens I have will really work for calligraphy 😕. Off to Michael’s tomorrow 😅!
Well at least a trip to the art store is never a bad thing... 😉
What helps you transition more smoothly when doing calligraphy?
Do you notice a big difference in the Black Velvet brushes compared to the Princeton brushes? I currently have some Princeton Neptune & Velvetouch brushes & not sure if the BVs are worth the price.
The Silver Black Velvet brushes feel very similar to the Princeton Neptune brushes. They're a mix of synthetic and natural so they're soft and hold a lot of water. What I notice most about them is that they're more pointed than my Neptune brushes, but maybe that's just because I ruined the points of my Neptune brushes years ago, lol. So... I don't remember noticing a big difference and I think the Princeton Neptune brushes are a great alternative to something more expensive. I do tend to use the Black Velvet brushes over the Neptunes most the time though. I feel like they might disperse color and water more evenly. Now you make me want to go test them out and compare them!
@@byheidigrace Thanks so much for your input! Since I’m still a novice at watercolor, I’ll just stick with the Neptune. I’ve been able to get them on sales & with coupons from Joann’s & Michael’s without spending a fortune. My best purchase so far has been a FREE block of Arches cold press cotton paper after a 60% coupon & a $25 gift card - It felt like I hit the lottery 😂!
@@dianeb95 ooh yay for good deals!
Lovely! Looking forward to trying this!
yay! Have fun painting!
What brand pen are you using ?
I used Stabilo Pen 68 Brush pens. They're one of my absolute favorites and they come in a lot of beautiful colors!
Like how you breakdown the steps in a straightforward way! Thanks, your calligraphy style is calming and beautiful 😍 would like to see a resource on calligraphy layouts and composition

So stunning
aw thank you!
Really beautiful work 🙌
thanks!
FYI: Kuretake also makes fude brush pens, including a fine point which is thinner and stiffer than the Tombow, Pentel, or Zebra pens.
Thorough overview Heidi! Admire this brand of brush pen! Exactly what I would suggest to hold the brush pen about 45 degrees to the side to get the downstroke contrast. If I hold it too firm, it gets tense so a steady balance of firmness helps my calligraphy practice. Calming to watch your styles of brush lettering. 🖊️
Yes, sometimes we need to loosen our grip a little too 👍
And store natural hair brushes where they can't be eaten by moths, etc.! Many years ago, I lost a number of good brushes this way before I realized what was happening. I'm grateful for the high-quality synthetic bruses we now can find, but there are still many natural hair brushes being made.
Good to know! Especially since natural hair brushes are usually the most expensive.
