Selecting Work for an Exhibition
My next Online Exhibition starts at 7pm on Sunday 26th November 2023. It will be on my website and there will be at least 18 new pieces that have been made specifically for this exhibition. They can be shipped anywhere in the world.
I had more pieces than I needed for my exhibition so I have spent some time carefully looking and making decisions about which pieces to include. I really enjoy taking my time looking at my work once it’s been fired. I sometimes enjoy the unexpected effects that the kiln creates but also discover pieces that I have to continue working on to get right.
I really enjoy doing my Online Exhibitions as it gives people all over the world the opportunity to buy a piece....

Large Slab Built Vessels
Просмотров 9 тыс.Год назад
Making with larger pieces of clay is an enjoyable challenge. The process is much the same as when making smaller pieces except a few props are needed and a bit of thought about the process before going ahead. The form of the piece I am demonstrating in this video is more challenging because of the rounder shaped base. I am using Earthstone Smooth Textured Crank which is covered with a slip made...
Draw to Explore
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Год назад
I’m thankful that during this period when my wrist is broken that I can still draw and therefore explore ideas and imagery in my sketchbook that could evolve into new ceramic pieces. When I go out into the landscape to look for inspiration, and more often when I’m not looking for inspiration but find it at unexpected times in unexpected places, I will then come back to the studio to capture the...
Ceramic Wall Pieces
Просмотров 17 тыс.Год назад
Most of the ceramic works that I make are non functional vessels but I also like to make these ceramic wall pieces. I like making them with irregular edges that are then contained in a more precise white frame. They have different creative challenges compared with making more 3 dimensional pieces, not least trying to keep them flat as they dry out. I employ all the mark making techniques and ma...
Opening the Kiln
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Год назад
Unpacking pots from the kiln is always an eagerly anticipated part of the making process. It’s usually enjoyable and rewarding but also a relief. Although I have a fairly good idea about what will happen to the materials that I’ve applied I never fully know how they are going to react and look. Handling and feeling the pots also tells me something about them and is also enjoyable and insightful...
Glazing a group of pots
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
This group of 6 pots have had their first firing and are ready to glaze. Although most of the mark making and colour is added before the first firing there is some important work to do adding areas of glaze and oxide to the surface to enhance the surface and composition of marks and shapes. Larger areas of glaze are added using a spray gun while smaller areas can be brushed on. I only us 2 glaz...
Slab built pots, from start to finish.
Просмотров 12 тыс.2 года назад
I’ve been making more of these ceramic pieces where I wrap clay around wooden blocks. This way of working helps to retain the soft feel of the clay in the fired final pieces. This video follows the journey of the pieces from making and constructing the slabs through to adding slips, engobes and underglazes and then onto analysing the fired final pieces and the process of making decisions about ...
Making Clay Slabs
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
The start of my making process is to prepare some clay slabs. I make these using my hands and a rolling pin rather than a slab roller. I explain the benefits of using my hands and a rolling pin in this video. The clay I am using is Earthstone Handbuilding Material (ES 40) which is a medium grogged clay that fires to an off white colour that is a good base for other colours than I then add. Inst...
Slab Building Basics
Просмотров 34 тыс.2 года назад
Slab building with clay is a wonderfully flexible process that can be used to create a hugely diverse range of ceramic outcomes. Essentially it’s a technique in which flat slabs of clay are cut, formed and assembled together to make 3 dimensional ceramic forms. In this video I am demonstrating how I use this technique of building to create my own work. The clay I’m using in this demonstration i...
Creative Ceramic Slab Building
Просмотров 12 тыс.2 года назад
Slab building with clay can be a very flexible and creative handbuilding process. I really enjoy this part of making my ceramics where I cut and reassemble the pots when they are leatherhard. The outcome of doing this results in shapes, torn edges and steps that become part of the structure of a piece and can be enhanced further when I add colour, texture and additional marks. Instagram instagr...
An Alternative Slab Building Technique
Просмотров 43 тыс.2 года назад
This is a ceramic slab building technique that I really like using occasionally. It allows me to capture the soft qualities of the clay in the final piece of ceramic work. The form is made from soft clay rather than the more conventional practice of allowing slabs to go leatherhard before building with them. The stability of the soft slabs while building is achieved by the all important wooden ...
Painting a black clay slab pot
Просмотров 3 тыс.2 года назад
This slab pot is made of a black clay body. I’m adding layers of engobe and slip to create a depth of colour. More detail is then added with some monoprinted marks and then some brighter underglaze is used to create a stronger coloured point of detail. I like getting in a flow when I work on the surface of my pots. I treat them like paintings and enjoy composing the variety of marks across the ...
Glazing The Inside
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.2 года назад
Although the focus of my ceramic pots is the outside surface and form, the inside is also important. In this short video I explain how I create the dark finish that I typically use in my work. The mix of manganese and copper oxide that I use is mixed with water to create an ink like liquid that I pour into the pots once they have been biscuit fired. This mix of oxides typically has a metallic b...

there is a freedom here in your work and how you work.... that I haven't ever seen in pottery before. Incredibly refreshing to know I am stepping into an art form (one that I have been afraid to tackle my entire life because I always had an image that these objects are fired and need to be "perfect" to become that permanent ... actually realizing this is how I think of all art that is worthy of hanging on a wall or sitting on a table...hmmm there is some deep psychological personal history lesson in there somewhere, eh?) anyway stepping into this type of expression is eye opening to me. and I am loving it. I cannot wait to work on my own mindset whilst building things that bring me joy, as yours does to you. Thank you so much for sharing this process and letting the process show.

    • @CraigUnderhill7
      @CraigUnderhill7 4 месяца назад

There are various ways to do this but one way is to get some slip dry it out to a clay consistency and roll it into pastels. To prevent it being so fragile and crumbly you can add some gum arabic, pva glue or fire them to a low temperature (about 500degrees C)

I use stoneware clay and fire it to 1140C. It’s almost vitrified but not quite but that doesn’t bother me as I see my work as paintings made in clay.
