Great appraisal - I've had mine fitted for about a month now (open-air pond approx 1300 gallon - so on the boundaries of what this can cope with). I use mine as a 1st stage (replaces a large vortex leading to a conventional 4 stage filter) and so far have found it all works really well. As this is now preventing so much crud reaching my main filter I'm now thinking of changing my filter's brush section to being a moving-bed with Hel-x13 media, which then passes to a static-bed section. My other "bright idea" (ha!) is to get a 2nd Surge and run them in tandem to slow the flow rate and catch even more crud. Any thoughts or comments are welcome ...

"He is half alive". Well put him in well oxygenated water. See if they recover. I had heron and mink issues here in Canada, I built a wood frame with 1" x 2" wood crisscrossing the pond which holds up the net. Give the fish something like a pipe that they can swim into to hide. The heron will be back, it knows there are fish there. I built a new pond, 4ft deep, and a wall that was 2,5ft above ground. Mink got into my new pond, caught a fish, then went into panic when it could not climb out because of the wall. The wall is too high for the heron to effectively catch from, nothing to walk on in the pond so it could not catch fish. Learn from mistakes. Good luck, don't give up.

Appreciated this detailed review. Re the electrics, an easier way to extend, or cut & rejoin to feed through, either of those cables is to just use an outdoor inline connector which you can get off Amazon. Very easy to fit if you can strip a cable correctly and get the right size for the cable.

Do you think you could use this after an eazypod? So bottom drain into eazypod and then pumped out of the pod through the surge and back into the pond?

How often do the filters need cleaning ?

Hello i just purchased a surge and the pump as a set and was looking at doing something similar to what you have done. i have a DIY wheelie bin fitler at the minute with a bog filter but i never had a UV and with the summer we having in the UK my water is really green so i thought thhis would be the ideal product for me. My question is my pond is 5000 Litres and with the head room etc i need to be running my pump atleast 5000 - 6000lph if i was to split the intake like you have done so half goes in to the surge the other half in to my diy filters can i get away with upping the flow rate to 5000 - 6000?

I don't know whether you are in north or south Yorkshire but if you can id recommend taking a trip to Queni Koi Limited near Leicester it's one of the best places I've been to and they have some stunning fish even you buy one or two in the £50-70 price bracket you won't be disappointed and it's almost end of season so they might have some offers on (you can always haggle lol) anyway it's definitely a place I'd do a video tour around if I had a channel and I bet a title like " Queni Koi Limited walk around tour 2024" would get a lot of new viewers as it's a popular place especially for drum filters ! Obviously you'll have to contact them beforehand and ask if you can film but even if they say no you could take a few cheeky photos 😂 but it might be nice to add one or two high quality koi and they're definitely high quality at Queni Koi Limited 👌

Just came across this review whilst looking for details and opinions on the Surge, one thing you’ve overlooked about the throughput is the need for maximum contact time to kill the algae spores, personally I would suggest people consider running at the 2500lph to take the best advantage of this inbuilt UVC.

Are you going to take people's first guess as some people have guessed multiple times which is unfair 🤷‍♂️ I'll give you an example. I guess 4,900L 5,000L 5,100L 5,200L 5,300L 5,400L 5,500L 5,600L 5,700L 5,800L 5,900L 6,000L 6,100L 6,200L 6,300L 6,400L 6,500L 6,600L 6,700L. I'm sure you'll look back at the previous videos (I believe my first guess was 6,100L) and also if you're struggling to work out the volume a good way would be to split it into 2 sections measure the dimensions of the shelf across the whole pond as I believe the shelf actually goes all the way around then put those measurements into a box volume calculator online. Then measure the deep part of the pond but only up to the height of the shelf as any water above that hight has already been measured when you measured the hight of the shelf across the entire pond dimensions length and width so the deep part is just length of deep part width of deep part and depth up to the height of the shelf so two parts of the pond you can always compare that to the water meater. And also finally try feeding them on a decent 3mm pellet koi food such as aqua sorce, Nishikoi, NT labs medikoi, hikari friend, JPD. Ideally you need a 3mm pellet and Tetra koi sticks are not that good, not terrible but not the best. Also a mixture of different foods is also good for health and growth but the smaller bags are not as good value so I'd stick to one 👍

They do this deliberately unless you pay by credit card, its happened to me several times where they put you address in instead of Manchester i suddenly became London with the correct street and a different postcode. With paypay they literally wont do a thing until you have received the item or waited 60 days for delivery. Then if you paid by credit card via paypal rather than by debit card or bank account you can get a refund almost instantly. if paid by other means you have a struggle

I inherited one of these from my mum and there’s a problem with the water, I hooked it up exactly like yours. Mum one is weathered and after removing the pump and solar panels I think it definitely needs a new pump, hers is a bit mucky but the panels are weathered. Do u have any clue if it’s the pump or the whole system I need to replace it with? I can get either the pump alone or both for £49. Not sure what to do. Thx

Nice informative video, it will be interesting how you site with warranty after taking the electrics apart. I did notice that you said the neutral to neutral however you was pointing to the green and yellow wires which are the earths not neutrals you pointed to the blue to white wire and said earth thats actually the neutral wire. Im not having a dig just highlighting the issue because electricity is very dangerous and if a complete novice were to take it as an educational video they could be causing some damage or harm. Hope you dont mind me highlighting this better safe than sorry. Keep the videos coming 🙏👍

Nice review, thank you. I see EA are still fitting sub standard valves to the surge and the tempest. I wonder why they havnt listened to their customers and continue to use poor quality valves and still charge high money for the units. Come on EA it’s hardly fair.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone else go into so much detail ! Personally I don't like the surge filter for a couple of reasons, one 3,500 lph is quite a small amount of flow for something that costs £300 and the second reason is that looking at the picture of the box you showed us it would seem that the UV is radiating all the K+ media with ultraviolet rays which will literally kill all the beneficial bacteria so it is purely a pre filter. If someone who wasn't as knowledgeable thought you could use it as the only filter on a 5,000 litre pond with a 2,500-3,500 lph pump they'd end up with a lot of dead fish. A £300 box or pressure filter would do a better job. I believe the tempest is a better product and you can use a tempest with a 55w UV but either way these should only be pre filters.
