In 1970, President Richard Nixon was scheduled at an American Legion convention in Portland, Oregon, in order to promote the continuation of the Vietnam War. A Portland-based anti-Vietnam War group, called the People's Army Jamboree, planned a series of demonstrations to be held at the same time as the convention. Law enforcement, expecting massive numbers of protesters on both sides, were conc...

Went for a sail on Hagg Lake outside of Portland, OR on 2000 Com-Pac Sun Cat 17. Light & variable winds with full sail and barely moving. Suddenly the winds came up strong and completely overpowered the boat (or me, since I've only been sailing a few months) I had to lower the sail and start the motor. I ducked into a small protected cove and set anchor. I decided to put 2 reefs in, mainly beca...

OK ki mi😊😊😊😊
Does it have a porta portie? And bimini?
For a moment I thought you were Steve Spurrier haha! Great video looks like a good time.
Looks like you handled everything very well-nice work with the gybe-looked smooth!
Beautiful sailing video in the Suncat Mike! Are the three stop-cleats on the port-side cabin top for the lazy jack system? Mine came with partially installed lazy jacks, and I believe that I read somewhere that a proper rigging really helps..
i had a sporty
Amazing footage! That looks like a huge fish (do you know what kind?) the bird caught! The fish was struggling, but the hungry Heron managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was desperately kicking sliding down that long throat! I wonder, does the large fish stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach and has a chance of survival here.
Fish was a carp. The area is full of them.
@@mikemeacham6906 Oh interesting! That must be some hungry bird! Still, it seems difficult to me how the Heron deals with this particularly large fish! So the bird was actually able to fit (swallowed alive?!) that whole thing down its long/skinny throat completely somehow?? I have never witnessed an event like this before. I feel somewhat perplexed over how it actually happens, wouldn't the fish stand a chance of escaping or even damaging (it’s sharp fins, wriggling, biting, etc.) the bird's throat/stomach if eaten in that condition?! It’s hard for me to imagine that the potential meal (wouldn't the prey also go into a desperate "survival mode" once it realized that it hit the stomach?) doesn't turn around inside the elastic gullet and how the bird can keep down/digest such an object with no issues? I don't have much knowledge about these events and am mostly curious, I appreciate any feedback/explanation. Sorry for all of the questions, you have some other neat shots too, have a nice week 😀
My dad and my brothers and I built a Folbot in our backyard in Levittown, PA, in the late sixties. A canal was behind our house and we paddled that up and down many, many times catching bluegill, carp, catfish. Left it behind when we moved to California in 1973. Believe it or not, I now live on a beach in Baja, Mexico, and someone left an old wood framed Folbot on the beach and it is now filled with sand and rotting. Amazing. A small world indeed!
Thanks for posting. Just bought a 2003 model. What's that thing that looks like an upside down dog dish on top of the cabin?
That is a solar powered exhaust fan for the cabin. That, along with the winch, were on there when I got the boat... I never use the winch.
Life is good.
Really nice to see you out enjoying nature and your boat. It is good to enjoy the simple things in life.
When I was 16, I built a 2 person Folbot kayak. It took me about 3 months to finish. Some of the best memories of my life.
I am so happy you posted this. My family and I were fortunate enough to experience this airshow. Not only did the former Soviet jets come out, but just about every USA fighter at the time was there. What a time to be alive. Never again would I have ever had the chance to see so many amazing aircraft in one place.
I love searching YT finding treasures like this one. I was in second grade in Russia.
What length is your boat? It seems to be a perfect size.
it's a 17 ft sailboat but looks and sails like a much larger boat.
It's a shame when it's cloudy like that during an air show. They have to do a toned down "low show" when it's like that.
Looks like a great boat! I am considering buying one now! I assume setup is easy and can be done single handed.
Yes, setup is easy and can be done single handed. The Mastendr™ quick-rig sailing system is the reason I chose the Com-Pac Sun cat 17
What fun. I’m retired and thinking seriously about a Suncat for overnight trips. I’ve never seen one. How difficult is it raise the mast? Do you sleep onboard? Thanks
I met Mike yesterday on the Willamette River and got a good look inside his cabin- also got to talk his ear off whilst he was readying Bella for the trailer ride home. The cabin is big enough to sleep two, and looks comfortable- much more so than my ComPac 16, which has a smaller cabin, but has quarter berths (torpedo tubes) to sleep beneath the cockpit. I witnessed the stepping of the mast, which is complex and a bit time-consuming, but very easy to lift and lower.
Nice little cruise. I did basically the same route 18 years ago on my Montgomery 17, CornDog. Great little boat and I'm still cruising on her, but haven't been back on the Columbia.
....very well done video....I specially like you sharing the day-to-day things like preparing your meal....it's what I hope to be doing one day.....I just purchased a Compac 16 that had been sitting up since 2005....as you can imagine there are a few things that need work on....my goal is to purchase a Suncat eventually once I feel comfortable with the Compac 16....I have subscribed.....
Where do you keep your anchor?
Nicely done! These are my cruising grounds as well (home port Kalama); you did a great job capturing the experience of being on this part of the lower Columbia, including rocking and rolling while docked at Sand Island! I've done that before and could hardly keep my lunch down! It's a bit better with a heavier boat (I have a Marshall 22 with a displacement >5k pounds), but it can still get rocky. I think most folks staying overnight just secure their boats at the docks and set up camp on the island (which has decent facilities). Anyway, thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching my video. Yeah, no wind all day then really blew all night. Pretty rough ride at the dock. Didn’t think I’d get any sleep, fortunately I did. Only got woke up once from waves slamming the hull.
Very good cinematography and nice location. Have you had any major issues with your boat? I cant decided between the Sun Cat and the West Wight Potter. Would like to know your thoughts between the two. Thanks
Love the boat! Small family in Florida here. May I ask about how much $ for the boat? I'd prefer to buy a Com-Pac as it's built locally.
A very nice post. I have my second compac: picnic: and it's so easy to rig and get into the water. The Suncat is a GREAT boat. Best wishes.
dont understand why this has so few views. one of the best channels. Thank you for posting.
Great video. beautiful landscapes. waiting for more.
Nice days on the mighty Columbia. Where did you end up mooring?
Thanks for watching my video. Spent the night at Sand Island right across from St Helens, OR. Nice docks but open to the wind. Very windy all night, rocking the boat. Waves slapping the hull woke me up in the middle of the night. Had to go out and check my dock lines and fenders. Went back to sleep and woke up next morning to dead calm.
Did you add the boom vang yourself? I've never seen a cat boat with one before.
Thanks for watching my video. Yes I did. I sail a lot on rivers, and while sailing down wind other boat wakes cause the boom to raise up and then slam back down. The boom Bang is very effective in keeping the boom in place. I also installed a topping lift that is very helpful for putting in a reef while under way.
@@mikemeacham6906 roger that! I just put a deposit down on a brand new Horizon Cat and I have to wait 12 months to get it so I'm studying up now! lol
Great video! I just found your channel. I subscribed. Looked like a wonderful time on the water. Beautiful boat!! Please keep the vids coming.
In addition to the boat and gorgeous scenery, I like your music picks. What are they? Right vibe for these little films.
Thank you for watching my video. I like the calming affect of the acoustic guitar. I just search for “duty-free acoustic guitar” and sample random cuts till I find one that strikes me.
Love your videos. The scenery. The boat. No filler and endless talking. Just... the experience. This is why RUclips is a good thing.
I remember this, I was a volunteer (parking) at the Air Show, probably standing in the parking lot watching these guys fly. In 1992 it was the Rose Festival Air Show; not the Oregon International Air Show.
nice
I would like to sail Yale but there isn't any camping available.
I don't know anything about these. but there are some camping options. Dispersed shoreline campsites are remote sites, established by PacifiCorp, Overnight parking dispersed camping is available at Saddle Dam. And then there is Beaver Bay Park and Campground
Thanks for info, it looks like they close after labour day. Might be some truck camping in the small town near lake, name escapes me right at this time.
Boat camping if it's roomy enough. We used to weekend on Cave Run Lake in Kentucky on out Hunter 23.
@@kCI251 Hmm, not this one unless I modify the sole. But you gave me some ideas. Thank you.
Another fine lake to enjoy the boat on!
Just found this video. I was wondering how the sailing was on Hagg lake. I'm down in Eugene, and thought about traveling North. Thanks for the brief tour.
Thanks for watching my video. It’s a small lake with multi-directional winds. I went there earlier while learning to sail…still learning but, have not been back since.
If you find yourself at Fern Ridge, hit me up.
Wish I could see first hand how it sails!
Love this boat!
tune that rigging....
Very nice! What model outboard you have?
Mercury 4 HP enough to cruise at 5 knots all day if need be.
Is it 20" shaft? Thank you!
@@vlad3349 pretty sure it's a long shaft
@@mikemeacham6906 Thank you! I just got the same boat and trying to get it ready in couple weeks.
New sub! Liked 🙏✌️😛🤗
Simply beautiful!

Hi Mike, I'm looking to recreate this sail for my folbot super. Any chance you've still got yours?
Thank you for posting this. It's fun to see what our TSF will look like when at sail.
What a cool little boat. Looks perfect.
Any way you could send me some photos of assembling this? Thx
yes, I have 10 hi-res photos of the assembly instructions that came with the boat (circa 1963)
Mike, I have an old 17.5 sailing folbot... I'm on the river in Columbia city, Or. beluka36@yahoo.com.. I'm re-rigging with some out-riggers.. love to meet you I've had 4 0r 5 folbots and used to go kayaking with J. Kissner... factory owner in my young days in Charleston S.C.
