No way Al opened them. He certainly closed them for sure. If Al wanted them open then he would have left them open. Why would they be closed now? There had to be a reason for him to be in there and when he showed up the cultists opened the gate and Al had to close it.

I don't think episode 7 will be topped this season (arc 5). The direction is so smooth and well paced in this ep and I loved the pre speech ost. Apparently this episode was written by Yoshiko Nakamura, who worked on some of the best episodes in Re:zero such as From Zero, Choose Me and Parent and Child.
