My Mini-Marx Boxcar Trains And My GG1 With A Short Boxcar Train. #billbsholidayboxcarchallenge2024
I got out my Marx trains that I haven’t run for a long time and my Mint Car Series GG1. I only have two Marx boxcars, but they worked out OK.

Running my Post-war F3’s. The outer mains are all modern boxcars and the inside main is all Post-war boxcars. I had to cheat with the ‘cabeese’, since I don’t have modern ones for Southern and Santa Fe and no post-war NYC.

Minor Foam Delay For A Good Reason

I had to do some cleaning and straightening in the train room and adjacent room, before starting on the foam. Here’s what I found and the reason for the delay.
Test Run On The New Curves

I just finished installing the new curves, to get rid of the O54 in the middle main, mixing O96 and O72 in the outer main and eliminating the straight pieces in the two outer mains.

A Quick Update On The New Main
Просмотров 591Месяц назад
I finally got the third main running. I put almost all of the accessories on the shelves. I’m getting the rest of my O27 track out and cleaned up in a few days. Foam, proper wiring and scenery will start the first week or so of November. Enjoy.
Track Update
Просмотров 250Месяц назад
I completed the inside third main. Menard’s O72 and O54 hybrid curves. Nothing is wired or fastened down, yet. I’ll get it running before I start lifting the track to add foam and then on to scenery. Hopefully, it will be somewhat ready for the Hanukkah/Christmas season.

Awesome Marx and Lionel consists. 😎👍
Thanks! It was fun, making those videos, for Bill's challenge. Merry Christmas!
Massive layout! So jealous
@@crashryanphoto Thanks! It’s always relaxing, running trains. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Well, John, you did it again! Of course, I enjoy watching all of your box car trains, but I really liked seeing that Marx B&O one box car train. I imagined that it was representing a super-fast holiday express train, lol. Very nice, John, thank you! Merry Christmas! Bill
@@ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway Thanks, Bill! It’s been a fun challenge, for sure. I’ve pretty much exhausted all of my engines and cars, but it’s been worth it. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
great run
Thanks much! It's been fun run, for sure.
Those short Marx consists look great
Thanks! I thought that they would be kind of neat. I've never run the B&O, since I got it ten or so years ago. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
love postwar box cars, great video
Thanks! It's been interesting, changing cars and locomotives around, for the challenge. Have a Merry Christmas and a fun New Year!
Another awesome entry!
@@UncleSalty-nz5uk Thanks, Salty! It’s been fun! Have a great Christmas and a fine New Year!
@johnandrus3901 You as well sir!
Love the selection of trains. Very nicely done!
@@TwistedMacGyversTrains Thanks much! It’s been a fun time, making these videos, for sure.
I wanted to do one more video, but I've run out of engines and boxcars. It's time to change things around and do some different videos. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
@@johnandrus3901Merry Christmas!
Well, John, what can I say, but another grand holiday box car video! I love those post-war F3's! John, so far, you have contributed the most videos to this year's challenge, and I am very appreciative of all the effort you have put into it. I went to #billbsholidayboxcarchallenge2024 to check on new videos and found that the "Collection" now has 102 videos. Thank you, John, for having contributed so much to this year's challenge. You have done it again! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you! Bill
Thanks, Bill! It's my first year and I figured that I would give it the old college try. If I don't get another one out, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
@@johnandrus3901 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you too, John! Thanks again! Bill
I like the way your videos, your trains, look on video. It's so much more pleasing than a lot of different videos on RUclips. Good Job.
Thanks! It's been a fun time, doing these videos. Have a Happy Hanukkah and a great New Year!
Among ❤my favorite is the F3’s with the streamlined look. Alco’s ❤are sorta streamlined too. Also my favorite. But missing the second ‘A’ units customary on sets. Second reversed unit just seems to complete the streamlined look.😊
Thanks! I see what you're saying. The second A unit is nice, but I figured the single A was all I needed to run the boxcars. I think that they look quite good, hauling the boxcars and the unbroken lines are pretty clean looking. I don't have a second A or even a B, for the Southern. I do like to run my Santa Fe and NYC streamliners with an ABA combination, but I change that up, also, from time-to-time.
Very Nicely done ✔️
Thank you, much! It was fun making the video, as usual. Happy Holidays
Great vidio

Wow! Now that's some string of boxcars. 💯
Man, John, I do not know how I missed your third video in the challenge. It is so good of you to continue to submit videos to the challenge. I have certainly enjoyed them all. You have an awesome railroad that can really provide a lot of train action. I figure those passenger cars on the end of the trains are filled with your railroad's executives and their families taking advantage of the opportunity to experience an express run. I image those box cars filled with presents being delivered to communities across the nation so that Santa can deliver them to all the good boys and girls. Thank you again, and for the third time you can proclaim, "Bill B., I did it!" Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Bill
Thanks, Bill! It was fun trying different things for the Challenge. Have a very Merry Christmas and a great New Year!

@@naxshack Thanks! It was fun making the video.
great run
@@PopPopsTrainRoom Thanks much!
Would love to see a 50 or 60 scale car freight on the outside loop. Looks like it can handle it without the engine chasing its tail.
It's cool to run big trains, for sure! I've run 56, mostly scale and semi-scale, before I upgraded the curves. The outer loop had O96. at the wider end and the rest was O72. I upgraded to an O96/O72 hybrid on the rest of the curves and all O72 for the middle loop. It is around 84 feet around the outer loop. I can keep a good speed up, without worrying about locomotives running off of the track. I'll post a long train video, shortly.
Nice run, love the variety of box cars. Thank you !
Thanks! It was fun making the video, for sure.
Great video, lots of action!
@@joeystrains.9316 Thanks, Joey! That was my second Challenge vid. I’m getting better at this video stuff.

Fantastic entry!! Lots of really cool boxcars!!
Thanks. I try to be creative, since they are the only ones that I have.
Good run chooch 👍🏻 looks really cool
Thanks much! It was a fun time making it.
Something about watching the rapid linkage movement of the toy Lionel steam locomotives that diesels can’t match. Nice😊
Thanks! There is nothing like watching steam locomotives running around a layout.
Too cool! You're inspiring me to do a diesel version of the challenge now! 😂
Thanks, Salty! I'm also thinking of a diesel video. I'm not sure how I can pull it off, though. More rearranging of my boxcars will have to happen, since I've run all of the ones that I have. We'll see what I can do and I look forward to your's, also. This is certainly a fun challenge, for sure.
Some extra information on the trains. The outer loop is led by my MTH Rail King Southern Ps-4 Pacific, which usually heads my AMT Southern Crescent set. It has whatever Southern region cars that I have, with an FEC caboose, since I don't have a Southern one. The middle loop has a 2026 leading, with a modern-era Pennsy tender, with all Northeast and Great Lakes region boxcars and a Pennsy smoking caboose, which obviously quit the habit, as it doesn't smoke, anymore. The inside loop is led by the FARR Santa Fe 8900, with all of the railroads from Chicago westward. The 8900 has a nice whistle, but KW's whistle lever doesn't work. All in a day's work.
Now that’s how you are supposed to run trains.A continuous video without cutting vid.Love to see your Train go all the way around the track.
Thanks. I run them as I ran them as a kid. Great fun.
Hey, John, as much as I am pretty much a diesel man these days, I do love those steam engines, and you have got some nice ones. Great job in bringing to us your second holiday box car challenge video this year! Your three trains featured a fantastic lineup of box cars. I liked the different camera angles too. That horn action at about 2:33 brought a smile to my face. Thank you, John, you did it again! Bill B.
@@ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway Thanks, Bill! Unfortunately, the whistle lever on the KW, doesn’t work and that Pennsy tender’s whistle doesn’t, either. I wanted it for the run, though, to make it a Pennsy train. It was fun making the video, for sure.
@@johnandrus3901 Well, perhaps those little issues will make for some good projects this winter. I did enjoy your video! You have a great space for your trains. It gives them plenty of room to stretch their legs. Bill
@@ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway Thanks, Bill! I have a number of issues to address this winter. Smoke unit repair, whistle repair and fixing the KW, along with some locomotive tune-ups. This is what the cold weather is for, getting things in working order. Time to get crackin'!
Awesome run! Love the variety of colors and road names
Thanks, Mike! I had fun doing it.
Kick ass! Best entry yet!
Thanks, Salty! I really appreciate it! I'll be waiting for yours and checking out all of the other entries as they come up on my feed. This should be fun.
@johnandrus3901 Yes sir! I'll get a vid done next couple days
Looks great but do you need ear defenders?
Yeah, I adding foam. The holidays and weather have slowed things down.
Some info on the trains. The outside loop has the MPC 8370 NYC F3, from the 1983 20th Century Limited Set, with all modern boxcars, from MTH, K-Line, Williams, Lionel LTI and LLC. The middle loop has the 2026, from my brother's original 1948 set, with a couple of 6464 cars and a pair of pre-war, carryover cars, the PRR Automobile Boxcar and gondola, from 1946-47 and the 2472 caboose. The inner loop has my brother's original #41 Army switcher, with the operating boxcar and brakeman car, with the 6257 SP-style caboose. The #41 basically tires out, after a couple of times around the layout, but it's a trooper.
@@johnandrus3901 Thanks for all the info. I couldn’t tell for sure, but was thinking perhaps the 2026 was a 2035. Do you actually have an idea of why the #41 tires out. Some sort of mechanical problem, worn parts. I don’t know just figure you might. I enjoyed seeing you trains running today.
@@ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway I don't know why it tires out, Bill. I serviced it earlier this summer. The commutator surface is in good shape I put new springs in to hold the brushes. I cut a spring in half, that came out of a light socket. Maybe, they are too long or too heavy duty? The brushes were a bit worn, but seemed OK. The pressure from the new springs may be wearing them out. Not sure, really. It ran quite fine on my inner loop, when it only went around the town. Hopefully, I'll figure it out. I run the 2026 the most, because it smokes way better than the others. I really need to service the other's smoke units. My MTH Pacific smokes real good, too, but it didn't fit with the theme of the video. I'll change things up, for the next one.🙂
@@johnandrus3901 I read your reply with interest especially about #41as there was a time years ago when my focus was on post war trains. While I now operate almost entirely command control equipment, I still really appreciate the post war trains. Is the motor overheating in a big way? I think focusing on the brushes and springs is the way to go. You might try just simply replacing both with new ones and see what that does. I have a friend who repairs Lionel post war equipment and will ask him what he thinks the issue could be. Take care. Bill PS I'll look forward to seeing your next box car video.
@@ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway Thanks, Bill. It's perplexing, for sure. Maybe, it just doesn't like to pull cars around, that much. I may go down and run it without the body on it. I've got some ideas in my head about the next video and I'll have something in day or so.
@@johnandrus3901 Super! Do people say "super" anymore, lol! Bill
Full watch here buddy you know how to entertain with Trains.I film my Trains just like you I DO NOT CUT MY Videos.I like people see the performance of the Train Traveling to and fro around the Track.Very important. When are you getting the slot cars? And what brand and scale
I have them set-up, but they need some work, before they are ready for video. They are all around 60 years old and need some TLC, to really get them working like new. They are 1/32 Revell, Eldon and Strombecker, Aurora HO and Ideal Motorific. I'll try to get them operational, before Christmas. I also have some Tyco and Life-Like sets. I have a Lionel HO set, with the Loop-d-loop, but it is at a friends house.
Man, Chooch, you definitely put together two beautiful trains of box cars! I particularly liked seeing that post war steamer plying the rails with all of the beautiful box cars. Definitely an awesome smoker. Great job, Chooch, you did it! Thank you! Bill B.
Thanks, Bill! I'm glad that you like it. I wanted to keep the #41 going, but it tends to poop-out. Oy!
BTW, I use MTH ProtoSmoke. It works quite well in post-war steam engines, with the pill-style smoke units.
@@johnandrus3901 Oh, yes, I understand! Nice little locomotive though. You know there is no rule limiting the number of videos one can contribute for the challenge. So, if you have another loco or string of box cars you want to share you can always do so. The challenge does not end until New Year's Day. Bill
@@johnandrus3901 Thanks, John, that is a good tip. Watching your video definitely has made me think about pulling out some of my post war trains. Bill
@@ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway Thanks, Bill. I'll try to mix things up, for sure.
AMT cars. Nice 😊
@@thomaswalsh5097 Thanks! They are pretty sweet, for sure.
@@johnandrus3901 How are the rolling qualities of the AMT trucks compared to (postwar) Lionel? I always heard they didn't roll well. Or is it that they need periodic re-oiling?
@@RailRide The roll fairly well. You do need to keep them lubed, now and then. I'm thinking of going to a silicone spray lube, which dries quickly, as I don't really like getting lube getting on the tracks, which happens when you lubricate axles and bearings. The wheels are just a shade smaller in diameter than Lionel, but the tread is a tad wider. The truck side-frames are each separate pieces and hinged in the middle, so they are very forgiving on uneven track. The draw-bars are attached in the center and move separately from the truck. Their simplicity makes them easy to work on. The one major thing is that the cars are quite heavy. The frame is a separate casting, as are all of the pieces of the shell. Sides, doors, ends and roof. They're solid and can take a fair amount of abuse. So, all-in-all, the weight is the biggest factor, as far as pulling a long train goes. Sorry about the long-winded reply. I do tend to get going, when I talk about AMT passenger cars. I wish that I could just send a picture. Maybe I'll do a video on taking them apart and servicing them. Either way, thanks for the comment and question. It is much appreciated.
@@johnandrus3901 No problem with the length of the reply, it pretty much answered all the questions I may have had about them. Also I write replies that long all the time :D Every so often I see these at various shows and I think of how these cars would look with the roofs polished with some _Nevr-Dull_ then replacing the bulbs+frosted windows with overhead LED's and scratchbuilt interiors, but imagining the amount of drag with a full set of each car type sort of acted as a reality check. I sometimes wonder how the trucks might accommodate a ball-bearing upgrade, but that would likely require shop tools (that I don't have room for), to alter the sideframes. (also, adding to my collection is like a game of _Tetris_ now, so I'm being really choosy as of late)
@@RailRide I use Simonize on the roofs, whenever I feel the need. Turtle Wax is fine, also. Only use plain wax, no polishing type of wax or compound. The sockets for the bulbs are built into the chassis, but they don't stick-up too far, so you can get around that. I have 45 AMT passenger cars, so I would have to upgrade to LED's, over time. I've pulled ten of them, with a post-war F3. An upgrade to LED's would reduce the amperage that they draw, so the transformer would have a bit more amps, for the locomotive. With a good, dry lube and the reduced current from the LED's, I think that there would be no problem running a full consist. There are nine cars to each set and I usually only run six. Sometimes seven, but rarely. The locomotives handle that many, with no problem. If you find a handful of them for a good price, grab them.
Your wide radius curves really impressed me as did your three sets of streamlined passenger cars !
@@NormanAllen-ps9ju Thanks! I’m glad that you enjoyed the run. They are great cars. I’ve been collecting the AMT passenger cars for a long time. I have enough to run 6 full trains, plus a couple shorter ones. Have a great Thanksgiving!
I just came across this video ... Subscribed!!!

@@johnandrus3901 Thank You Buddy!!!!! 😁
Fantastic! Love the wide curves. How big is the layout? It looks huge
Thanks, Dave. It is a 24x18 L. 9 feet wide at the short end and 7'4" at at the long end. I lose a lot of space, because of the slot car room, so it is narrower at the long end. My friend, who I bought the house from, subdivided the basement, many years ago. I thought about removing the room, when I bought the house, but I figured that I could use it for something, which is how the slot cars ended up in there.
Those Marx tankers are in beautiful condition!
They certainly are. I forgot all about them until I started to clean out the slot car room. They are totally opposite of my AMT passenger trains, but really cool, in their own sort of way Maybe, I'll have a Marx running session, when I get further along with the foam and scenery. Thanks for all of the great comments.
Love the old school 3 rail track
I probably could have shortened this somewhat. It took a bit too long to walk around the layout, before going to the slot car room. Live and learn.
