Making A $5000 Medieval Damascus Sword! | Columna Ignis
This was absolute EPIC project to create, I am super pumped with how this medieval damascus sword came out! I am calling it 'Columna Ignis', which when translated means "Pillar of Fire." This damascus pattern resembles that in symbolism of how the Word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double edged sword...
Tune in to this build to learn how I used a multibar technique in order to create such a blade, and then finish the project by crafting a traditional handle in honor of the legacy this sword holds in history. Thank you for tuning in, as always subscribe to stick around and see what's next! :)

Water bad
Plink! Snap! Pop!
Did bro use tongs to make tongs
Magnificent ser. Making a 1000layer version please.
Thank you! And that would be pretty epic! I have a couple more sword commissions coming up the beginning of 2025 that should be pretty sweet to watch! Thanks for being here! God bless - Ian
Nice job!
Thank you so much Denis! I’ve been a long time viewer of your channel, it means a lot you took the time to watch the video and comment! God bless - Ian 🙏🙌
@@IanZ_Forgewe need to get you in a future challenge. 👍
@@TyrellKnifeworks That would be epic! My email is ianzforge@gmail.com if that’s how that works? Thanks again!
Real question is how long do you want it to last. Will epxoy last 100 years? 200? Are we making tools or heirlooms.
Nice toe-jabber.
🗡🤙 Thank you haha! Thanks for being here!
Dude, why would you think water was a good idea. Really. If you have any forging experience, you know better
Forged in fire 101. Should have waited until you were finished before hitting that j
That's disappointing. One of those good lessens in life. 😊
just found your channel what a beatiful knife😳 im gonna try my hand at some feather damascus this fall new Sub and beautiful work Bro, Mark 👍👍✌
Thank you! Thanks for being here and good luck on the feather! 🤠🙏
Based. Should have donated it to me
Ouch.
I generally wont buy any knife with a rat-tail tang period, a full tang matching the full thickness/heu=ight of the blade is just so much more durable and provides more material to pin the sides onto.
$5000 huh? In what world?
I've built a few things here and there. I already know it's not needed, but I personally like them not only for looks but gives me comfort knowing my knife or sword won't won't fall apart on me 😅
Odins eye
Amazing work brother absolutely beautiful
Thank you truly! Glory to God 🙏🙌 Thanks for being here!
Lifted to soon, the cracks of pain
Idk if it lost to time. I mean, we still mixed layered steel. I suppose it was stronger back then, but I find it impossible to believe that a bunch of desert rats figured out something that no one in 3000 years of blacksmithing hasnt figured out. There isn't any " Damascus" of that time around anymore, so we dont know we might be making stronger blades now with patterned weld
Ah yes, Carbon Nanotubes in an ancient metal. What will these conspiracy theorists say next, that the Pyramids were buit by the aliens?! Oh, wiait...
So that's what the point of damascus!
Dude that video quality and your personality mixed with your professional process and the finished product the entire project was amazing to watch I absolutely love how excited you got and that sword is beautiful the lower layer count really makes it pop and I'm no historical expert but I feel like when they weren't using power tools they weren't making hundred thousand layers so the simplistic nature I feel makes this sword more historically accurate and more beautiful at the same time this was one of my favorite videos to watch and I loved that you gave credit to the people you learned certain techniques from I look forward to more content from you keep up the excellent work much appreciated that's how it's fuckin done boys.
Thank you!! I really appreciate that and you taking the time to watch the video! I’m glad you enjoyed it! And yes! I really loved the idea of keeping the pattern more bold like that, I felt like it had a lot more purpose and beauty then had I just increased the layer account or done something else that’s rather stereotypical of Damascus! I’m happy that you found value in it as well! God bless!
I had never seen your videos before and it's obvious that you really know your stuff. I'm also impressed that you studied under the Stagmer Bros and Iliya at Baltimore Knife and Sword. HOWEVER, . . . when you over act and do goofy stuff, those antics detract from your presentation. For the viewer, it's kinda like seeing a juicy looking hamburger then taking a bite only to find the beef has a shit core inside. Honestly, you're already SO GOOD at explaining and blacksmithing that you don't need to fool around with infantile behaviors / speech. Only RUclips dweebs and newbies do that stuff. Just be you, get collaborations with popular knife makers and you'll do great earning our respect and a ton of subs.
Thank you for that and for checking out the video!! I really appreciate it! Also just for transparency I never went to the Baltimore Knife and Sword Shop; whenever I took the classes I went to their own shops respectively and learned a ton thankfully! They’re both awesome smiths and I was honored to have the ability to learn from them, especially from Ilya and the inlay work. I have a long way to go still but I thank you for being here with me on the journey! God bless
What if being goofy *is* him "being himself," eh dickweed? Ever think about that? And there you go, literally telling him he's shit inside, while wrapping the insult up inside the facade of politeness and pseudo-constructive criticism, not even having the balls to just straight up say so like a man. Nobody else had a problem with him goofing off. Seems like you're the only one. That's called a "clue." Now show us your videos. Let's see how a "professional" does it. I notice you don't have anything posted under your account, so you must have another channel with hundreds of "professional" videos on it, right? Right, Bill?? Right?
I'm sorry but the audio is just so funny.
this is beautiful man wow! excellent music choices too
Thank you truly! I appreciate you checking out the video as well! God bless!
Excellent work man!! Sword is beautiful!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you checking out the video man! As I mentioned before, your sword build video is one of the ones I watched when I had this project in mind for inspiration! 🙏🙌 God bless!
Absolutely amazing!!
Thank you! I really appreciate that and for you being here with me! God bless
Wow that’s incredible
Thank you! Thanks for checking out the video! 🙂🙏🤙
Great work man!!
@@mattmakesknives Thank you so much Matt! I really appreciate that and you taking the time to check out the video! 🙏🙂 - Ian
If its not wood then its too $$$$$
They can't even figure out how they made Damascus 1000 yrs ago much less replicate it today
What does the user like, and what are you using the knife for.
Both but i like wood especially when i cut or find it myself in the mountains so there always an adventure story to each knife or sword but the synthetic is so cool to i don't really use it though but want to more
I try and forge to shape most of the time. By try I mean sometimes I don't want any forge finish and end up with some.
Antler...
I have a Custom blade made from boron carbide and its a million times better than this
You should be better then to use water
Lol
I like handle pins for the aesthetic, but of course the increased strength is good.
What if modern blade smiths call their products "modern damascus steel" and historians could call the historical stuff "historical damascus steel"? It could help avoid the controversy without confusing people and the change wouldn't be difficult to make since it's just adding a word instead of actually changing the name. It would also be an equal change on both sides, each side adds one word for clarification, of the argument so it wouldn't feel like one side won and the other lost. Both modern and historical damascus deserve to be talked about and I think it would be better to talk about how cool it is instead of arguing about what gets to be called damascus steel
Too cold too fast
Honestly for me if its a functional knife its plain brass pins and epoxy, if its more elaborate then mosaic pen, if its a show off piece then no pin.
Yup. Rookie mistake. What did you use to quench the blade with? 1st of all, and 2nd, you dipped the blade and pulled way too fast and way too many times. You are supposed to quench in oil by dipping once and hold for like 10-20 seconds or more, not quench and do a saw motion. You never watched Forged In Fire?
I think pop culture calls it Damascus to try and bury the achievements of the past. Calling patern wielded steel Damascus is just modern blade makers stroking their own egos with a subpar product.
Mom said not go double dip😅
And hidden tang handles are so so so much easier to make
