Surprised by Christianity: 4 What does it mean to believe in God?
Alister McGrath explains how believing in God is about the discovery of someone we can trust, and who gives us meaning, identity and security in this messy, uncertain and perplexing world. For Christians, faith is not primarily a set of ideas but a vision of reality, which transforms the way we see ourselves and the world. Faith is about stepping into this greater vision of life, and living it ...
Surprised by Christianity 3. Surely God is just a wish-fulfilment?
Many argue that God is a construct of the human mind, something that we create to shield ourselves from a world devoid of meaning and personal significance. But it’s not that simple. Human beings are very good at constructing worlds that correspond to their desires. In this presentation, Alister McGrath explores how atheism can equally be considered a wish-fulfilment, and reflects on our tenden...
Surprised by Christianity: 2: Isn’t belief irrational?
Christianity is about beliefs - things that cannot be proved to be true. Surely we should limit ourselves to what we can know for certain? It’s a nice idea, but things are much more complicated than this simplistic approach suggests. We can only prove shallow truths, not the deep moral and existential truths that give meaning and purpose to life. Oxford professor of theology Alister McGrath her...
Surprised by Christianity: A relic from a dead and distant past?
Why are so many people rediscovering Christianity? Why does a two-thousand-year-old way of thinking and living that is so deeply rooted in the past remain resilient, relevant, and life-changing today? In “Surprised by Christianity”, a series of seven short presentations, Alister McGrath, a professor of Christian theology at Oxford University, explores the remarkable appeal of Christianity. He w...

Christian Reflections Series 1: #3 Plato's Cave - A World of Shadows
This is Alister McGrath at Oxford University, offering some reflections on the world and human existence from a Christian point of view. So often we limit reality to what reason or science could prove. In this video, I’m going to reflect with you on whether reality is bigger than the world we know. I’ll do this by reflecting on the famous image of Plato’s cave. See what you think ...
Christian Reflections Series 1: #2:The Search for Satisfaction
What really satisfies us? And what does the deep human yearning for something that really matters point to? In this short video, Alister McGrath explores how Christianity understands this sense of human emptiness, and how it illuminates what we are really looking for.
Christian Reflections Series 1: #1 The Beyondness of Things
The composer John Barry is best known for his Oscar-winning soundtracks to movies such as Out of Africa and Dancing with Wolves. But one of his pieces has a more intriguing title: The Beyondness of Things. Both the title and the music hint at something beyond the everyday, something meaningful and important that hovers just beyond our ability to grasp it. This short reflection considers how nat...
Christian Reflections Series 1: Introduction
A running set of reflective videos, exploring many aspects of the rich Christian understanding of our world and human life. The first set consists of six short videos, usually about 6 or 7 minutes long. I’ve based them on talks I have given to students, church study groups, and adult education classes. I’ve kept them short and simple. This series reflects on how we try to make sense of life, op...

Discovering Theology 17: Theology as a Window on Reality
Up to now, we have been looking at some key ideas in Christian theology. But what use is theology? What benefits does it bring? In this presentation, wewant to reflect on how we can use theology by focussing on one way in which we can use theology - namely, to see ourselves and the world as they really are. It gives us a lens or window onto reality.
Discovering Theology 16
This presentation explores the Christian hope, reflecting on some of its major themes. Why is heaven such an important idea for Christians? And what difference does it make in the present? We look at how the Christian martyr Cyprian of Carthage thought about this, and why he insisted that paradise was the "native land" of Christians. In the next presentation, we will reflect on how we can look ...
Discovering Theology 15: The Concept of the Church
This fifteenth video in this introductory series to Christian theology looks at the Christian understanding of the church. It explores a number of ways of understanding this notion, and reflects on the four terms used to describe the church in Christian creeds: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. What do these mean? And how do they illuminate the nature of the church? We also reflect on how the...
Discovering Theology 14: The Trinity
This presentation looks at the doctrine of the Trinity, which puzzles many people. The basic idea is that this doctrine brings and holds together the core building blocks of the Christian understanding of God. The aim is to preserve the richness of this understanding, rather than limit God to what human reason is able to cope with. The presentation explores this point, and considers how some le...

I would rather believe there is a GOD, then die not believing in Jesus Christ and find out there is a GOD.

You live by faith
Everything you wrote is hogwash. True. You love your sin so much. Can you give me good evidence that you evolved from a monkey? Is this verifiable?
Thank you.
Thank you
Thank you.

Love your talks, Mr. McGrath. You're one of the people I always go back to listening to. Been doing this for years, just never got round to mentioning it. Sound words become more and more precious as the world becomes more and more deranged. I can't believe what I'm seeing when I step out my door these days. I live an ocean away from Oxford, but I imagine taking one of your classes would be a pleasure.
--- Limitations of Scientism and Scientific Overreach 🧪 The idea of scientism is about regarding science as the ultimate standard and arbiter of all interesting questions, expanding the scope of science to encompass all aspects of human knowledge and understanding. 🌍 The very existence of an extra scientific vantage point would falsify the claim that science alone gives us a rational means of investigating objective reality. 🧠 The problem of justifying the authority of science goes beyond using science itself, leading to implications of something beyond science. 🤔 We need more than science to answer life's big questions, and relying solely on science to determine what is right or wrong is highly contestable. 🧠 Albert Einstein cautioned that the Natural Sciences are outstanding in their sphere of competence, but what about ethics and questions of meaning? 🌌 Science is wonderful at raising questions, but some of those questions, like the meaning of life, lie beyond the capacity of science to answer. 🧠 The use of rational and evidential criteria to criticize religion by Richard Dawkins highlights the importance of applying the same critical attitude to one's own ideas. 🌍 "The danger of scientific overreach is very obvious when you read the writings of Richard Dawkins, and it leads to intellectual impoverishment by limiting our knowledge and understanding of the world to a single disciplinary approach." Reconciliation of Science and Religion 🤔 McGrath shares his personal journey from being a committed atheist to embracing the importance of apologetics in relation to the Natural Sciences. 🌍 Modern scholarship has increased our understanding of intellectual history, moving away from the idea that science and religion are permanently at war. 🌍 The idea that science and religion are necessarily locked in Mortal Kombat is outdated and no longer relevant in recent scholarship. 🧐 The fundamental conflict is not between science and Christianity, but between dogmatic metaphysical naturalism and belief in God.
Dr. McGrath, have you ever read anything by Henri DeLubac? If you did can you please comment on his work? And if you haven't I would recommend you to start with "The Discovery of God", short but probably the most powerfull theological work I have ever read.
I'm already looking forward to the next episode! Thanks Dr. McGrath. From Brazil!
thank you
Interesting! Convid was always only real inside the cave ( TV). Outside it was normal life. We are born with a Babylon TV in our homes (cave). We don’t k ow any other reality. Secular humanism Prussian schools cement the illusions. We add Christ inside the cave instead of breaking free from the secular humanism cave setting up our own institutions. We love the seats of power and credibility, respect of the cave dwellers.
5.33 receiving what is promised. Hopefully
I am reading this now. Not so easy to follow. But the chapter on Spirit and Trinity are well done. I couldn't put the book down. I will definitely buy and read the companion book on Christian Theology. I find this the primer and having a more detailed book of 500pages is no bad thing.
Can this series be published as a book? It is very well put together as a series of topics and slides. Please publish because it gives us many new insights and is different from the two other major textbooks. It seems more personal
