They were all adopted.

There is a video titled "Behind the Scene" that was posted a couple of years ago here on RUclips, sharing some details of their upkeep. Although their setup has immensely improved, the cleanup remains the same. Yes, newspaper is placed underneath them and changed twice a week. Their feeding trays and water trays are kept on the outside of their cages. Their main white water dish is kept on the corner of the TV cabinet and changed throughout the day. They drink and bathe from it. Their cuttlebones and mineral blocks are secured to the outside top of the cages. Everyday I am speaking to them, repeating a few phrases. They know their names. They seem to know what their favourite vegetables are as a few chirp every time it is mentioned prior to feeding it to them. I dedicate between 30 - 60 minutes daily in 5 - 10 minute intervals, standing in front of them talking to them with my index finger straightened, patiently waiting for them to perch. They have made so much progress since I began interacting with them.

@freeroamflock Thanks for sharing this. Five of mine practically mob us when we walk in the room. Especially if we are eating anything, they try to steal our food. I hand raised three of them from hatching. Ours are in our great room, the only room other than two bedrooms. The kitchen is open to the LR. Mine have only had all-day freedom for a few months. Before, they were only let out when we were home. They would be very upset if we went back to cage living. Where in Canada are you? I live in Maine. Do you have any English Budgies, or are they regular budgies? I have several English exhibition style birds from show breeders. I love them all!

What an incredible bond you have with them! I am in Manitoba, Canada. They are all regular budgies that I have adopted from various local owners.

Thank you! The oldest one (Mika - blue & white male) is 6 1/2 years old. I started out with 1 budgie 10 years ago. The birds have always been free roam, their cages are never closed. Their setup is in the corner of the living room. Yes we hang out there and interact with them throughout each day. There is newspaper underneath them. I vacuum the parquet flooring daily and mop every few days. Also wiping the leather couches with disinfectant wipes. They have various chew toys and the natural rope to chew on, so they have not destroyed anything other than that. There is daily cleanup after them, but nothing compared to the happiness they have when they spread their wings! Thank you for also letting your birds fly around! They must love it!

@freeroamflock Thank you for sharing this! I don't feel so crazy now for letting my budgies enjoy their freedom. I've gotten some ideas from your videos that I'm going to implement right away, like hanging perches from the ceiling.

That's great that you give them ample space! There is a Nesting Box that my birds haven't used. Unsure why they don't breed. All of them know their names. I have been working with them and continue to be patient for when they will perch on my finger.

​@@donnadavis8917No I have not. Was open to it back when there were less birds. However, at this time, we are happy with the current birds.

@freeroamflock I would take down the nest box ASAP. I had a pair of budgies that started to lay eggs, so I gave them a box. They raised two healthy chicks. I took away the rest of her 6 eggs as they were laid and substituted dummy eggs because I didn't want her to raise more than two. I wanted them to stop after the first clutch, but she started laying eggs again when the two chicks were still in the box! By the time they fledged, she had laid 10 more eggs! I again took away all but two eggs and incubated one egg in an incubator. My egg hatched, and I raised a healthy chick. She raised her two, and again, she laid 10 more eggs, but I took away all her eggs and gave her all dummies. When her two chicks fledged, I took the box out and put all the males in one flight cage and the girls in another. The point is, once they start breeding, it's VERY hard to get them to stop! Then you will have to cage your budgies to stop them.

They are free to fly all day. Their cages are kept open, however they rarely go in there. They sleep on a different spot each night on the ropes.
