So helpful🎉 I love the advice on looking at the classes that are offered for the program! Thanks
I’m in grad school now. Talk to my friend yesterday and he said “Kim a license is a license!” Get the license 😂. Honestly LPC and LMFT can counsel married, families, and individuals. The only thing I may have done differently was went straight through but I’m only saying that now. Lol. My mindset probably wasn’t ready then.
I saw a job that only takes LCSWs just the other day. So no, a license isn’t a license. But I understand in theory what your friend is trying to say.
How did you pursue your dual license requirements?
LPCC's in California have the same scope as LMFT's. Other states may be similar. (As of 2023)
Great video! I’m considering therapist or counseling
Hey Justine! I am from Chicago too, and looking at different grad schools and this video, as well as your "How to decide..." video and I have so much more clarity on the career I want to pursue. I am super interested in the CACREP program with Clinical Mental Health/Marital, Couple, Family Counseling specialization that you took. I was wondering, how much years it took for you to complete and if it was more classes you needed to take compared to just a Clinical Mental Health or Marital, Couple, Family Counseling degree. I know this video was posted a while ago so it's okay if you don't see this comment but your videos helped me so much! Thank you again <3
I also had the same question
😅
This was very helpful, thank you, and it made me feel like I am not alone. I am a FL LMFT as well, and I am looking to do supervision for graduated students in other states. I have been licensed 3 years, I am not FL Board Qualified, and I am not an AAMFT Approved Supervisor until another year. Do you happen to know if there are any states where I can provide supervision as an "AAMFT Approved Supervisor in Training" with 3 years post- FL licensure? 🙏🙏
How did you know MFT was your niche?
Hi Justine! Thank you for this video! I keep on seeing the importance of COAMFTE accreditation but my school, Chaminade, doesn't have it and now I'm concerned. I've been assured I can practice as a LMFT in the state of Hawaii so I think I'm fine. I don't plan on moving from this state. I know this is a long shot, but do you know anything about this? I really enjoyed your video by the way! Hope you are enjoying Germany!
Hey Robin. Great question! I am an LMFT without COAMFTE accreditation. It’s not been an issue for me or anyone I know.
Great information but music was a little distracting.
If I am interested in pursuing becoming a therapist who specalizies in the following areas: Addiction, Mental Health, Family Dynamics, Identity, would that align more would being a LMFT or a LMHC?
Very helpful and enlightening! Thank you! Planning on going to grad school this fall and have been trying to decide between these similar positions. Much appreciated!
I’m pretty influenced by the narrative approach but I also thought I wanted to be a school psychologist. However I realized being a school psych would be completely against my goals as a provider. So when you mentioned that MFT is way less about “fixing” people you saved me from being stuck and thinking there’s no careers for me ty 😭😭😭
Thank you ❤️, Justine this helped me so much about my interest and field of study . I'm wondering if you can get a LMHC and Art 🎨 Therapy. If you don't mind answering that question 😝 for me
Excellent
Thanks for the video. It was very helpful. Just want to clarification, is it possible for someone with a masters in marriage and family counseling to get an LMHC, or are additional courses required?
I’ve been nurse for 35 years (25years in states)& now interested being MFT ,as a foreign educated 58yrs old, would gradate school course tolerable for me?
Hey there! I read your comment and just HAD to reach out! I was a nurse for 30 years (35 years in healthcare) and I just started my masters in Psychology and hope to be a LMFT someday! I am currently 58 years old. I have been challenged to find people like me so that's why I was super surprised to see your comment! LMK if you would feel comfortable with an email chat! I know it can be weird being contacted by a complete stranger so I would totally understand if you don't. Cheers!
Never too old!
Hey Justine, just recently discovered your channel. Congrats on your baby! I have a question about the fact that sessions are typically restricted to 45 / 50 minutes in the prevailing models of therapy. I always felt that was frustratingly too short as a client and as a therapist it would be important to me to offer patients longer appointments if they wanted them and felt they would be beneficial. Is it possible to get insurance to cover two appointments back to back / in one week, or quite difficult to do? Thanks!
I am just seeing this I apologize. Insurance will not let you bill back to back in one week unfortunately.
I'm 47 years old. Is it too late to pursue this career??
Your never too old to follow your dreams 🙂
@@kelly_houx thx...I'm on the fence. Bless up
45 with lots of debt and also considering this, Always been a passion. My two big concerns, however, are salary, and the fact that it’s independent work with no coworkers to build camaraderie with.
This was a really good video. Thank you for posting. I agree accreditation (e.g. CACREP) is important, but has exponentially driven up the cost of master programs with no evidence in improving client outcomes. It very much feels like a scam and in my opinion has reduced the quality of graduate level education. Nevertheless, I think MFT programs are the best option for persons wanting to work with children and families.
Just came across your video, so informative. I majored in psychology in undergrad (10+years ago) got my masters in Legal Studies but am now coming back to Psychology because I know this is my purpose. But I’ve been trying to figure out which what to do and this blessed me because I’ve been considering MHC and MFT.

Been trying to get a hold of you. Email me
Very helpful, and you have the everybody's friend vibe :D
Thank you fornthis video about your experience with this process. It wa a helpul. I want to move from Ca to Georgia as an MFT and could use a little support. The process seems daunting.
I find it interesting that some programs don't outright mention 'Human Sexuality' in their titles...when sex is a huge part of life. I know these issues are being taught...but why be so conservative with the titles...? Because of external entities who might want to donate scholarships? I am finding that programs near larger cities...religious institution or not...actually list 'Human Sexuality'. Like...'keeping it real'. Sex is a small portion of a relationship but without it the relationship is over... just like abortion is only 3 percent of Planned Parenthood but pulls in the most revenue (just an analogy but true nonetheless). What are your thoughts??? It really bothers me...if a program can't just say the word sex in their course descriptions....it says alot about the culture of the program. I am a conservative Christian that likes to keep it real. I'm not the type to say...distract yourself with other activities to weene yourself from sex addiction lol 🤣 I want to get to the root of insecurities.
Two years later and still super helpful. Thank you
What country are you from ?
How to decide ? Easy DONT DO IT
A LCSW can do all of this and more. And they are the only masters level clinicians that can accept Medicare. I assume because social work is an older, internationally recognized profession for every sphere of health treatment, especially community based. Remember, the field of psychology is still relatively new, and some of these degrees are especially new and might not be viewed the same way across all positions even if they are accredited. Many of the pure counseling programs end up being a little myopic by hyperfocusing on abnormal psychology and on individual solutions which primarily treat the symptoms.
I agree with most of this…. Social work has been around for wayyyyyy longer and they learn a little bit of everything, which is why they can do so much (not everyone, like myself, wants to do that though...). They can take Medicare, but I don’t know many clinicians that want to deal with medicare…. Medicare was a pain to deal with when was I billing them when I was analyst. I have a few good friends and many colleagues with MSWs and LCSWs who don’t feel as though they have had as much clinical counseling preparation as a psych/counseling degree, but that likely depends on the program. I only disagree with the last sentence, as that wasn’t my experience. My program for counseling only had one ‘abnormal psych’ class, but I can only speak to my experience. Psych program focus a lot pathology. I simply answered the person’s question and they had no interest in doing social work. They were between these career paths. But maybe I’ll do a video on this because it comes up a lot. Luckily, there are so many options for us to all help. I took one social work class in undergrad and new it was for me… I dropped it within a week 🤣 If that had been the only option, I guess I’d have a PhD in psych 🤷🏽♀️
Yes, as an LCSW I completely agree. Go LCSW route
On December 23, 2022, Congress passed the Mental Health Access Improvement Act (S. 828/ H.R. 432) and was signed into law by President Biden. This bill allows LPCs and MFTs to enroll as providers in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as Medicare providers. (Source: American Counseling Association)
I’m researching this for myself and finding that MSW carries a bit of a chip on its shoulder 😂 I tease but I’m also serious. I think it’s great to have an expansive and highly contextualized view of mental health but some of us are suited better in other programs. After speaking to many programs, I’m finding that that’s me. So yeah - maybe folks should tone down the MSW supremacy 😂
How did you get licensed as both LMFT & LMHC??
Thank you for this video. Is there a specific average salary that LMFTs make?
Definitely depends on your location. California for instance I’m sure pays the most.
Hi Justine. Great content & subscribed! Let us know what you think of our grad school channel.
I’m checking out your channel now pretty interesting topics
🕊
could you do a video about your grad school experiences?
Yes definitely! Give me a week or two 😊
Video has been uploaded answering your question
This was SO helpful! I majored in psych in my undergrad but went into an MS for speech therapy, and after a year I had to take time off. I’m completely reassessing that career path and feeling called to return to my passion of psychology. Looking into/applying to MFT programs now and seeing if things fit and feel authentic & right. I appreciate your thorough breakdown!
Hi Dibs!! If you see this comment will you pm me?
I would love to talk more with you! I have a very similar story but I am someone who has always been passionate about mental health counseling but applied to speech pathology because I thought it was more of a stable career for some reason. However shadowing SLPs I do not enjoy what SLPs do, but my grad program starts next month!!
Anyway if you see this I would love to get in touch because hearing about your experiences as an SLP would be invaluable for me! What have you not enjoyed about it ? Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for this video. Do you think it’s necessary to have both the MFT and MH degree and license if your looking to be in private practice. Also, what are your thoughts about Duel licensed as a LCSW and MFT without a degree or course work in MFT? What University did you attend and did your university offer an online option?
This was so helpful thanks!! Trying to decide between Florida and California too.
omgggg thaank you!
Thank you so much!!!
What school and program you attended for graduate school?
Hi, Justine! I'm looking to get in touch with you about a TV documentary series in early development -- if you see this, and if you're interested in discussing further, please email me at: jennabcasting @ gmail . com -- thank you!
Do you get paid more since you are dually licensed? I'm wanting to do some kind of counseling, working specifically with those in eating disorder clinics. I'm thinking I should be researching more into MHC, but wonder if dual is worth it?
Great video! thank you!! :)
Thank you so much for explaining the difference.
Have you found that being duly licensed has been beneficial?
For me, yes. Not only am I knowledgeable in two different areas, I also have twice the job options. But that does kind of depend on what sector of work you’re trying to do. I’ve seen jobs that require a LMFT and they won’t take an LMHC/LCPC.
@@justinej12 have you seen jobs that requires LMHC that doesn’t accept a LMFT? I really want to couple’s therapy, but I am afraid not been considered to MHC with a LMFT... help! I’m also considering Barry, but I can’t afford a dual... thank you so much!
@@janifotitorrens4738 I don’t know why I’m just seeing this 🤦🏽♀️ LMFT are usually equipped with the same knowledge as a LMHC, so you’d be fine getting an LMFT and being able to do mental health and individual counseling as well.
Very helpful video, thank you for taking the time to make it!
Thanks
love the way you put things into perspective! thanks so much, just subscribed :-)
