Onsen Towns and Sacred Sites | Van Life through Yamagata Prefecture
As I drive my way south through Tohoku chasing the fall colours, I now find myself in Yamagata prefecture. This prefecture is known for its mountains, onsens, and temples, and that's exactly what I came here to see. Along the way, I met some incredible people and I almost feel like I could call Yamagata home. While I did stop by some tourist hot spots, I rounded out the trip by visiting some small towns that I had never heard of, which revived my excitement for exploration, and I hope it sparks it in you too!

your videos are amazing and you are more amazing 😍😍😍
Thank you :)
Ryan, likely the smartest decision you will ever make, was quitting that job and buying that Camper Van, and then setting forth to document your adventures across the poetic beauty that is Japan! Well done sir, and I say that as a new subscriber.
Thank you so much for these words. I do think it is a turning point in my life with massive potential, so I just gotta do what I can to make it reach that!
bro... put photos in every video ❤
@BenMcCaugherty haha noted!
It’s best to Yamagata onsen town in winter.. You missed Zao..
@@VannidaAntonisMA I missed a lot of things, I only had a few days 😂
Do you need a permit to fly a drone on remote places?
If your drone is over 249g or in cities or national parks.
amazing!!!
Thank you!
I live in Tohoku,,yes this area is incredible ❤❤❤❤
I absolutely agree..
Oh wow those shots!!!
Amazing
Awesome video! What font did you use in your thumbnail?
@@staycuriousph thank you! You’re the first person to ask this haha, it’s called Roca
maybe a polarizing filter and some color grading to improve the videos
@@tushaar3306 unfortunately my cpl doesn’t stack on my nd, colour grading I just started learning two months ago so I know it sucks, but lots of people seem to like it so 🤷🏻♂️😂
I just binged all your videos. 😂
@@CamiloMacaya hahaha thanks so much for the support, glad you liked the videos enough to watch them all 😂
Just when I thought I was saturated with Japan vloggers I find your channel. I love your editing style and the facts you throw out when showing a specific place or idea. Let see more!!!
@@CamiloMacaya really really appreciate that, thank you for the helpful feedback!
love the footage! What camera and lens do you use?!
@@justinhojiayong thank you! Sony zve1 and mostly tamron 28-75, but I have a couple others for wide and long range
Been following your journey for a bit but this video made me have to comment. WOW!! Absolutely stunning photography and great editing! Yamagata is definitely on my list for road trips. How fluent are you in Japanese? Can you read kanji too? I’m still a beginner and know hiragana/katakana but only a few kanji so far. Just curious how often you use google translate or can just converse with the locals
Thanks so much for the kind words, appreciate you taking the time to comment as I read every single one 🙂. I can get by pretty well, but I keep the "jisho" app close by for any difficult words I come across when conversing with people. I know roughly in the ballpark of 200 kanji, so a lot of more difficult signs I pull out google translate for. Hope that helps!
Brother your storytelling with a mix of vlog style and cinematic is 💸
Dude really glad to hear that 🙏 ngl I wasn't sure how it would come together, but it flows pretty well!
You are living a dream life. Wish you all the best wishes in your journey.
It's not all sunshine and roses, but it's definitely an adventure! Thank you for the kind words 🙏🏼
This is why I’m learning Japanese. It’s so cool how you were able to form a great bond with your barber and experience something you never would have otherwise. I can’t wait to be able to converse with people and form human connections that would otherwise be impossible.
I remember the very first time I visited Japan back in 2018, I only knew a handful of basic words and I was so frustrated at myself because it was so hard to break that barrier with the people I was meeting. It’s so rewarding learning and being able to have awesome experiences as a result. All the best to you my friend, you got this!
Great video! 😃
Thanks for the visit!
Dude I haven’t even finished watching the other video and here’s another upload! I just realized it feels like a nice documentary and story I’m watching as new episode comes out. Would love to see date stamps for me to follow mentally so it’s like I’m right there with you 😉
10:26 your behind representing Canada
11:00 can you do a currency translation to CAD pls
14:23 lol so glad the wind timing for this shot
Bro you finished this video but not the last one which is even more important?! 😂 feedback well received, time stamps could be cool for sure 👌🏼 been debating doing cad conversion but most of my subs are American so would only be useful to the small % of Canadians 😢
Nanyo looked really nice especially with all that autumn colors. I never seem to get sick of those
Ya it was a completely unexpected stop, so what a pleasant surprise it was!
Ginzan Onsen is one of the places at the top of my to-visit list, it looks amazing. Great video as always Ryan!
Thanks so much! Definitely recommend, especially if you can get yourself a room in one of those hotels!
I always look forward to your videos. The vibes and the views are insane🤩
Thank you! I'll continue to provide as long as I have you guys motivating me!

Pls include brief reviews if the local foods
Thanks for the feedback Ben, food is not my expertise but I have done a bit in the next video!
Beautiful~ as always
Much appreciated!
Hi love your content, just a question what are the rules in Japan regarding freedom camping?
Thank you! Good question, normally it’s allowed in public parking lots but sometimes there are signs saying whether it’s allowed or not, but technically everywhere else it’s illegal unless it’s a campsite.
@ thanks for that
Such a treat being able to follow your adventures!
Thanks for following on :)
The videography is amazing and the music is so peaceful. Goes great with my morning coffee!! Your videos give me motivation to continue trying to learn Japanese!!
I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you so much :)
Another great video! Loved the photo shoot with Taka and the fall colors throughout the video. Already looking forward to the one.
Thanks a lot, happy to hear showing the photos isn't out of place too!
had this dumb smile on my face all the way through your video. ginzan and dewa sanzen was hits on one of my first few trips years ago. and looks like we sat at the same teahouse as well. I stayed overnight at the temple and we were the only people there. core memory.
Thanks Martin! I do hope to stay at the temple next time, that's so cool you were the only one..
What do you listen to while driving?
Great question! Either Japanese podcasts, audible, or music
Yet another masterpiece 🙏
@@morsoder you’re too kind ☺️🙏🏼
That moment when you were walking with the autumn leaves falling around you was absolutely breathtaking! 🍂 14:17
@@adeladjaout I couldn’t believe it myself!!
zao onsen in yamagata was my favorite spot when i visited. Another great video <3
@@shalevcohen24 thank you so much! I’m gonna hit up Zao in the winter to see the snow monsters ⛄️
This is the first time I've watched one of your videos, it's incredible, keep up the good work.

I love it, I love it, I love it!
Amazing video ❤
Thank you so much!
Ive been to Japan 5x since 2007 and it makes me sad to see masstourism has taken the country over. Your videos give me a sense of how I remember it to be :) Thank you
@@TheAlconex ahh I’m so glad. Luckily there are still so many places away from the crowds and that’s where I find my peace 😌
Colors are beautiful Yellow leafs for a few scenes followed by red leaves, nice bounce, very catchy (Also, you look super tall 😊)
I think Yamagata had the best fall colours I've seen in Japan so far, timing was just perfect! I'm about 6'3 so not absurdly tall for western standards but it is for Japan 😂. Thanks for the feedback Ariel!!
Beautiful work my guy.
Thanks so much man!
Beautiful series mate. Sumimasen, chotto o tazune shimasu. If you only had 2-4 weeks with your van would you still venture north? I’m curious about all those pins on your G maps and where you’d recommend for someone who also wants to skip the crowds and tour busses
Thank you! If I had only 2-4 weeks, I would only focus on one area for sure, and which area you choose would depend on time of year.
Love the video, thank you. Although that constant back beat of the music used is so tiring it does not compliment the beauty of the scenes, it's like music for quilt making how to videos. Pls change it. Anyway thanks.
😂
I appreciate the feedback! Can you specify which song you're referring to?
Hi the music from the very start is beautiful. But the music you used in 1:45 to 4:36, 11:14 to 12:58, 14:25 to 16:14 is not fitting to your beautiful video. That's smooth jazz, r & b ish elevator music just cheapens an otherwise beautiful video, it makes it feel like a how-to-make-a -handicraft instructional video. i do love Japan & your videos i find it unique. I'm a music director sorry.
@@keysonthego3663there’s no need to apologize, I value the feedback especially from someone from a music background. Honestly finding music that suits every scene is a big challenge! If you have any suggestions, I’ll look into other genres that might fit these types of scenes better.
As always, SUBARASHII !!
You're too kind 😇
So inspirational🔥
I'm really glad!
You always inspires me. Your video is as always very well thought and very pleasing to watch. You makes Japan even more beautiful and attractive. Mabuhay ka!
Thanks so much! It's honestly a struggle to tie everything together after I film everything, so I'm super glad to hear you think so ☺
Absolutely stunning scenery!
Isn't incredible??
Barber story is insane...hope you were able to return the favor!
