I love the cooking in this game! I like that you have to work around a schedule!
Personally, I love that everyone in LIE is a culprit. HeR Interactive had one opportunity to pull the “everyone did it” trope, and I think it was executed beautifully.
@@rachelnorthauthor that's true!
Imo the ending/reveal of Labyrinth of Lies is the best part of that game because of it's unconventionality - there's no other reveal quite like it, and they all have different motivations and levels of complicity. But I think they can never do it again cause it wouldn't have the same sense of shock value and novelty 😅
@@snughly good point!
At first i was surprised that curse of blackmoor manor was ranked very hard because ive beatened the game at 14. but when i replayed the game at 21 i didnt remember it being so difficult including the stone tile puzzle as well as the navigating the spinning room
Any culprit who befriends crows is alright in my book 👍
Agreed!
I dislike that Dwayne's voice actor changed and the lazy change in character motivation, but the games were far enough apart that I feel it was fair. That said, I played Stay Tuned for Danger as a kid and Ransom of the Seven Ships as an adult so I played them "in order." Labyrinth of Lies wasn't a great game, which is part of the problem. If, say, Phantom of Venice had the same culprit- style, it could have worked and made sense with the money problems/priors two suspects had. It's a good idea that in over 30 games needed to be tried once, it just happened to be in a not great game, like introducing the myth, the legend Sonny Joon in the terrible Shattered Medallion. Two big swings and misses at the end of the games my computer doesn't want to blow up trying to run, but worthy swings. As an EP attorney, don't get me started on Ghost of Thorton Hall, Secret of the Old Clock, and Shadow at the Water' Edge. There is a documentary about the crazy rich called Born Rich that discusses being born into insane wealth and therefore making a Will at 18 to be safe-level rich among other struggles and general life. Charlotte leaving everything to her sister over her cousin is not a shock, minus some rift between her and Harper we aren't aware of, and the whole Will scavenger hunt is my workplace nightmare 😂
Such good points! Also your job sounds fascinating!
The Boss villains just make me nuts because Nancy NEVER considers them as suspects, ever! Learn from your mistakes, Nancy!
Did you consider a separate culprits category for Jane and Richard in secret of the old clock? They both kinda just coincidentally committed crimes independent of each other
I'm working on a video that sort of addresses that concept! Because, yeah, very interesting situation there!
The first time I played Castle Malloy and Nancy strapped on the jet pack and went "Wooohooo!" I think I was actually stunned by the silliness. 😂 Enjoyable game, though, and the ending freaked me right out.
this is irking me !! whose the third nancy drew child character ? i can only remember lukas and jane !!
@ophiuchus5540 Freddie in ICE! I often forget about her too since she's so hidden away in her ice castle 😅
One problem with a repeater culprit is that it calls too much attention to time. Dewey said something about spending years in prison. But if Nancy is perpetually the same age, then years haven't passed since Stay Tuned For Danger. Technically, all the games might take place in the same "Semester Off" that Nancy mentioned in Secrets Can Kill. But that doesn't bear much examination, because if you look at the passage of seasons throughout all the games, a couple of years would have had to pass, at the very least. But then why hasn't Nancy aged? Or HAS she aged? Starting with Phantom of Venice, there are a couple of games, including KEY, where she seems to be working as a professional. Did Nancy graduate High School, grow up, and turn pro at some point and they just forgot to tell us?
@@GraemeCree good point!
Personally I've always subscribed to the belief that most reoccurring characters in every Stratemeyer Syndicate series are actually vampires. Nancy, the Hardy boys, the Bobbsey twins and all their family members and chums haven't aged in nearly a century. Plus we know for fact that Nancy doesn't have a reflection.
So sorry to ask, but before I watch, could someone confirm for me whether KEY is on here? I still have yet to have enough time to finish it 😅
@telercoi3234 KEY is included and there are culprit spoilers! So you may want to skip this one until you've finished!
@ Thank you!!
great video ^.^ i agree that the unconventional is only unconventional if it isn't used often but i like seeing something different now and then. i think for me the lowest rank types could work but that in a way more work should be put into them than the usual culprits to actually make them work. for instance, a repeat character can kinda be set up if there's hints to them having a connection to nancy's past an info on what nancy's been up to (and not wearing a problematic disguise) maybe we don't clearly see them and that adds suspicion because nancy would recognize them, that way even if the person playing hasn't played the other games there's still setup that at least nancy should know who it is. With the multiple suspects i feel like it can work if there's a larger cast and evidence tying two together OR if there's evidence that a group of people have certain things in common that they've been hiding from Nancy like that they actually all are friends despite pretending to be strangers or if they were all wronged by the victim in some shared way. I do very much like how Jane's story went and the detail about Lukas almost being a culprit as well. always good to see care given to Fiona, honestly with the hints about what she experienced Matt's situation may have been something seemingly normal to her, even if she felt uncomfortable with it she may not have entirely understood it as wrong but just acted in the way she'd learned from the old woman. love your videos!
@@AlkemyFrost-ju4hx thank you! Loved reading your thoughts!
I felt do bad for JANE and FIONA two young girls who needed mental health help one for family therapy and the other for grief counseling but neither got the mental help they so desperately needed
@@nerdygeekgamer5528 definitely!
Comfort creator to the MAX❤️
@@therealsophie123 aww, thank you!! I'm so glad!
I'm shocked no one mentioned the dummy game that breaks in the Final Scene! That scares me SO BAD every time even as an adult. I also hated the speaking dummy in Crystal Skull so maybe I just have an issue with dolls/dummies.
Wouldn’t Mitch also count as an unconventional culprit since we only find out about him at the end of the game? The Absent Culprit perhaps?
@@Chilmerican ooh yeah, that's a good point!
I would call Mitch the Unguessable, since you don't even find out he exists until he's revealed as the culprit.
I feel like in terms of the "Boss" culprit. Secrets remastered did better compared to deadly device. Since it's a remaster of the first game, it would make sense that Nancy wouldn't yet have the reputation as such a great detective. At the time, she was probably just like any other detective. So it's understandable that beech would use her to clean up the evidence. It just makes sense. Deadly device on the other hand isn't as good. Even if someone else was referring to nancy for Victor. He should know better, too, since nancy is so reputable as a detective at that point in the series.
@@mrorion4794 agreed! I also still felt a little doubt for Beech by the end, but definitely not for Victor. I think he was hidden a smidge better!
I think HER does a great job preventing Nancy from becoming a Mary Sue. Her tactlessness, her poor fashion sense, and, to me, the way she takes Ned for granted are all part of that.
Andy’s key chain is funny because she could have just requested to see it, but instead she demanded to be given one 😆
Wow, and when you consider that Dwayne Powers was also the only suspect AND his disguise was culturally insensitive, RAN feels extra lazy. 😕
Right?!
Poor Dwayne both of his games have been discontinued at some point 😭
@ Haha I didn’t even think about it that way. He’s actually a great villain in STFD!
Did the demographics of every culprit in Nancy Drew games and the culprit is most likely to be- an adult white man or woman (both genders equally likely)
Good question! I did a quick tally, and of the 40 total culprits (because some games have multiple) 14 are white men and 17 are white women. 5 are POC men and 4 are POC women.
This was great
Thank you!!
Captive curse ending is unconventional, not the culprit per se. Guess and click is interesting also
True! It's definitely interesting getting the option to see if we're right!
In terms of returning culprits, it won’t work for this franchise. It’s perfect to do for a tv show because viewers watch the episodes in order and are surprised by the plot points. There is not guarantee in a game series such as this one that players will have played them in order. Thanks for another great video!!!❤
Agreed!
is it really such a bad idea or for ransom did the pick the wrong culprit personally i would of picked helena or minette maybe emily
'I played the games out-of-order' is not a valid criticism of a culprit.
I would argue it is a valid criticism, simply because STFD is a VERY early game in the series, and is harder to play on modern hardware/harder to navigate.
@@rudikelley It is a good explanation for a subjective opinion, absolutely, but not for objective critique. 'I lacked context, and that makes it bad' is just a wrong thing to think in pretty much any context.
Agree to disagree. The games are not marketed or sold to be played explicitly in order, so lacking context is a valid criticism in this situation, in my opinion. The game does nothing to fill in the missing context. If the game had done a better job of filling in the blanks for players who may not have experienced STFD, then it would be stronger and more inclusive of more players.
@@WizardKittenYT The games are literally numbered, though.
@@thefairybug40Can you think of any other example in the series where the effectiveness of a major plot point hinges directly on having played a past game? There’s plenty of backwards references and Easter eggs but beyond that it’s not typical. I can totally see where you’re coming from but in this instance I think it was a misstep.
Happy New Year! My two favorite villain types have been the Belated and Innocent Villains. I like the added complexity they add to the stories, making those games more interesting upon replay, since there's more nuance to pick up on the more you play these games. I think I'm glad they don't happen more often, though, since that type of villains needs more careful writing/plotting, and the implications seen in GTH and Castle Malloy make them much heavier games, so it's good having more conventional villains and lighter games between them. The series has a great balance of villain types and game mood/atmosphere, which is another reason I love coming back to it. There's a game for every occasion!
Totally agree!!
I think WAC could be included as having an ending with multiple culprits too since Rachel/Kim are the ones sending the black cat notes for Corine.
That's a good point! It does make it a little more similar to the TMB ending given the blackmail angle, though I guess Lily always felt more complicit and willing than Rachel/Kim in my head.
Castle Malloy is probably my favorite it felt like a brave and mature direction to go for games aimed at younger players. My least favorite is the child culprit Ala Blackmoor because I want Nancy to feel a sense of danger which is hard to come across with Jane. Blackmoor I still rank high for all the other aspects but the ending isn’t my favorite I wanted it to be scarier 🕵🏼♀️ Labyrinth you know I love the story and ending of that game with Nancy rising up from the ground and exposing them all during their performance lol So I do like that one a lot too.
Totally fair points! I definitely see what you mean about the Blackmoor confrontation being a little bit of a let down!
Castle Malloy for the win 🔥
Haven't played KEY yet. Are there any spoilers for that one in this video?
Yes hold off on this video until you have played keys. :)
Yes, there are! Thanks @caseyhoward8650!
I have a terrible hot take...I really don't like Blackmore. It’s too spooky for me. BUT I do agree Warnings at Waverly is the one I love most.
They should have had Shorty come back in RAN they had the same VA 😔
Having the same voice actor definitely would've improved things!
I think it should've been Andy Jason. He was also Andy's voice, and honestly, the setting and the situation seems more Andy-like. To me, anyway.
@@PianoGirl091 That makes so much more sense! I love that idea
@@PianoGirl091YES! I have always said it made so much more sense for it to be Andy. Same voice actor, same level of unhinged, and Andy had major experience with driving boats and the water in general.
Happy New Year everyone🎉🎉
Happy New Year!!
Perfect video to watch while I have my breakfast and coffee
Aw yay! Enjoy!
I’m kind of surprised that there hasn’t been a Nancy Drew game set in the context of a major awards ceremony! Think of it - Nancy has been shortlisted for a Youth Citizenship award or something, she goes to an interesting place for the ceremony, meets a bunch of upstanding, interesting, and/or annoying people (some organisers, some attendees), and then when something goes horribly wrong at the event she has to figure out the culprit, set things to rights, and generally save the day. In the end, she doesn’t win the award (it goes to someone who initially seemed very suspicious, but who had very good intentions and/or was being framed by a competitor), but - as she writes to Ned - she made some fascinating new friends and it was an honour just to be included!
I can't say I'd put Mel as high on this list as she is, but I will say that I enjoy visiting her whenever I play this game. She's a breath of fresh air from the other girls, and she reminds me of many of my high school friends, haha!
Mystery of the Seven Keys has everything! I'm getting ready to replay it. I wasn't aware how much I didn't pay attention to. I wish I did because I wouldn't have died so much trying to find an antidote. Lol! 😅
let's just pray Nancy has a very STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM
I love the classical Era. It has a good balance of what I love. I always like more plot lines and stories and music rather than puzzles. However the classic Era has just enough puzzles to keep you interested, with a good balance of story arch with music
FYI, Nancy’s hair colour (Titian) is pronounced tishun, or sometimes teeshun, rather than titty-an. Thanks for another thoughtful video!
Cool!
FUDGE I was so looking forward to this and I MISSED IT 😢
@nerdygeekgamer5528 aw man! Hopefully you can still enjoy the replay!
@@WizardKittenYT I am looking forward to this years ND game themed STREAMATHON
i pretty well agree and think i mostly like the spooky and darker ones though there's definitely some others too like Waverly. i think TRT is pretty much in the right category, i'm a bit biased but i thought maybe it could scooch up a few places for the dead-body-looking shape in the dungeon and the historical angle portraying the Queen as a tragic young figure killed for her husband's misdeeds. overall still more cozy than scary but i remember the odd figure creeping me out as a kid and the story of Marie seems pretty tragic in this telling.
“Has Frank ever given Nancy a gift? I don’t think so.” SHOTS FIRED WK!! 😂
@@EmilySmith-vx3ro 😁
Lovely stream!
@@jcro666 thank you!
It baffles me how they looked at all of the games that people put so much heart and love into and really gave character, and said “Let’s change everything and people will love it :D!”
i liked Fox and Geese and felt like once i understood the rules it was easy but then there's a lot of puzzles not mentioned i could never do and am so impressed others can. Also, i love Scopa... The mice puzzle i just like because i like mice and it made me happy to see them moved to a nice new home when many people are a lot less kind, sorta inspired me as i now envision a little home for them as part of my dream house's yard. I didn't mind the mini golf either. My most frustrating were number and science puzzles, i still can't believe Castle Malloy kinda literally gave us rocket science! I wholeheartedly agree to the criteria of "difficult at the end when we just want to get to the conclusion" that was a point i had with Midnight in Salem, most of the puzzles were really easy then all of a sudden at the very end they were difficult and i had no patience for that, plus why would they be designed that way given the context? Why risk hurting the person you were saving things for? That's just careless and made no sense to me.
