The Heart Warrior Project

Добавлен 14 июл 2022
I am Jellis Vaes, the host and founder of The Heart Warrior Project, and a sudden cardiac arrest survivor. I started this project to provide emotional support for fellow cardiac arrest survivors, after experiencing myself what a wild ride this has been, but also how little emotional support is offered. On the website, you can find practical articles to help you live a better life after surviving a cardiac arrest, and on the podcast, I talk with fellow survivors about their journey to provide you with tips and advice. I hope you feel at home here, my fellow heart warrior.

I had cardiac arrest 3 months ago and it left me with many issues and it’s a lonely road. A world with gaps.
Hey! It can be really lonely, I know. I hope listening to some of the conversations with fellow survivors might make you feel a bit less alone. Just throwing it out there as an invitation-we also host free online meetups every month. You'd be warmly welcomed by other SCA survivors (including me! 😊): heartwarriorproject.com/online-meetup-for-cardiac-arrest-survivors/. Again, it's just an invitation.
Thank you for this video, very informative. There is 1 point though that I think would help people. There is an activity sensor in the Medtronic ICD (accelerometer) and yes my device will pace me on an extremely bumpy road, construction as well. My normal heart rate driving is 50-55 and I have seen it go over 100 when on a rough road. Also I have had my ICD since 2016 and worked in a power plant. My employer had an EMI test done and determined several areas of the plant where I was restricted from entering so this is an option as well.
Hey! Happy to read the episode was informative. Thank you for sharing additional information!

I got an ICD implanted 11/2023. Last week got a call from the hospital asking if I am ok. The ICD signal sent to the hospital indicating "Elevated Optivol since 10/29/24. However, thoracic impedance has started to trend back up towards WNL" . It means it is indicating potential fluid overload or heart failure exacerbation. I am still freaking out since I don't have any symptoms. All I remembered was that week I did a lot of exercise such as CrossFit, & hiking, and also spending time in the sauna and steamroom while on vacation in Bali . Do you know if that might be the reason with the fluid retention?
Hey, it's a great question. Unfortunately I am not a medical doctor. So I can't really give an answer on this. Do you have an upcoming appointment with your cardiologist?

After having 2 cardiac arrests within 20 minutes of each other while on holiday. I was placed in an induced coma for 3 days and left the hospital after having an ICD fitted I was released from hospital 21 days later. I should now be able to live a normal life span and the ICDs are 98% effective.

I am grateful to have survived sudden cardiac arrest. I was in a coma for about a month. When I woke up my memory was damaged badly. I could not recall who my mother was, nor my children. I am grateful to have come out, i had to relearn how to walk, take speech therapy and each day is a blessing. I have a ICD as well. Keep up the videos I appreciate the info.

This is interesting’ and looking at it from what’s happen to me. I was told I had 2 options after I had 1 case of VT the safest thing for me was a ICD implant or could try meds . I’m 52 always been fit and healthy always enjoyed cycling and running keeping fit as a father. So life with my ICD well I have had 3 shocks from it and each time it’s hit me I’ve not been working hard physically it’s just gone off. All the doctors say is it detached a VT rhythm and the data on 5he device says the heart was up to 200bpm , and yet I was talking and there was no hard breathing and my wearable garmin was only at 100bpm . Now I have the psychological thing that this thing can hit me any time. The shocks hurt me I’ve never had back problems but the last shock the pain in my lower back was very painful. I’m awaiting a VT ablation which they want to do. But why have a ablation if the icd just goes off I don’t really want a procedure and more scarring if it’s going to continue to shock me when I’m not doing anything physically . All the hassle and stress it causes I wish I didn’t have it in me. Would love to here your thoughts!!!!!
I've been awake during the shocks (therapy) I've had. All of them happened at home. No one around. One person at the emergency room (different er visit) said, "hey you have a guardian angel with you at all times, that's so cool". You have to also know that there is something called ATP pacing. Your device will attempt to slow the rhythm down first, but if it exceeds parameter settings it will deliver a LIFE SAVING shock and you will be on your feet instantly. Follow all instructions by your cardiologist. Ask lots of questions. 7% vs 98% survive-ability?? Any questions? feel free to ask.
Poor girl: getting tested to death. Big Phama/Medical will test you until your insurance is used up. I suggest that if she is asymptomatic she should avoid them. Eventually they'll overtreat some minor anomaly then have to treat the problems that their testing and "solution" cause. The number 4 killer in America is the medical profession.
Fantastic. Thank you so much.
She is SMART & PRETTY.
Who do you mean? :)

Hey Richard! Thanks for watching :).
Thank you very much for a thorough and articulate answer. I appreciate this clip very much. 🙏
Glad to read! :)
Thank you for this information, It has helped me so much today. After my cardiac arrest 5 months ago, and my surgery to put my ICD. I have been pretty good without symptoms of any kind, completely released from my Drs. With the reassurance that my heart is completely healthy, no scar tissue, no blockage, no damage of any type what so ever to my heart tissue. Etc. well, my palpitations came back these past two days and I wasn’t prepared to deal with the PTS. This program and your channel is great. I have so many questions. Wish I could contact you. Thank you for what you do.
Sorry my friend that the palpitations came back ... It's a wild road we have been placed on. Sending you lots of strength. And you can always reach out to me. Contact me on Instagram @heartwarriorproject.
Great clip! I really don't think my EP should have implanted this icd. I really don't think that I'm at great risk and, unfortunately, I've lost trust in my EP and the the cardiologist who sent me to her. (I'm no longer buying what they're telling me.) This is a great clip! Thank you so much!
Thank you for addressing the complexity of needs that require a transdisciplinary approach following SCA. Had a full vfib arrest (no notice), and ICD placed almost 2 years ago. Would still be glued to the couch without cardiac rehab, physical therapy and EMDR...and family support. Hang in there fellow survivors!❤
It's a great topic, and very relevant to me and a lot of others. I had a VT episode and was defibbed. Few days later ICD was implanted. Felt pretty good. Then while recovering had a SVT while doing mild/moderate exercise. ICD fired twice. Been sedentary since, lots of anxiety if my HR gets over 110. Appt to discuss an ablation with the doctor soon, but the anxiety about getting shocked weighs heavy on me all the time.
Am in the same boat got mind 6weeks ago and now it's in back my mind when it's going to shock me. Hope I did the right thing havi g ICD put in me.

Thank you Karen for the comment! It's hard indeed. But, we are in this together.
I really enjoyed doing this. It felt good to talk about my experience. I hope someone can get something from the discussion. Love this project and the work Jellis has put into it.
A true pleasure to have had you on the show Grant! Thank you for being so open to sharing your story.
No thank you. I had a very small chance of having a stroke during an ablation and I ended up having 3 of them. I've been shocked by a high powered cow fence in the late 70's... Knocked the wind out of me and threw me about 5 feet. Serious fear of electrical shock. And my anxiety about when it's gonna crack me would be off the charts. I also know two people personally who have them and from what they told me, there's no way
If one has heart rate issues, especially if it stays over 100, beta blockers will save your life.
I just got an ICD implanted 8/19/24. These videos are very helpful to me as I recover from my surgery as it helps me know what to expect and answers a lot of the questions that you just don’t think to ask before the surgery or are afraid to ask. Thank you for your channel and the work you do on here. I really appreciate you.
Hey Bryan, happy to read the channel has been helpful to you :). Sending a lot of love and strength your way.
I messed around and got one but it seems like now walking from my room to the front do all of a sudden my heart rate goes from 86-105 just walking to stand at the front door when that was never the case before.😳😩 I just don't want to be a lab rat on something that's not right yet. I truly have anxiety over this😒 I want it out already…
Why do you think it's the ICD and not something else?
was it a false shock ?. I have gotten twice, both times it did its job , Sleep and electrolytes seems to help me. Treat ICD device has your friend who is there to save you ,I know its easier said than done so we got to try, I am following that approach to get over the anxiety.
Oh hell no ... They wanna put one in.... not gonna happen
What makes you say that?
@@heartwarriorproject Scared of electricity.
I understand that you might be scared, but it could be helpful to truly consider what this belief is based on. Have these feelings arisen from reading a lot of negative things on the internet? If so, keep in mind that most people who share their experiences are often those with negative ones. This means you're not getting a fully accurate view. ICDs are incredible devices that have done far more good than harm for those who need them. If you haven't listened to the full interview I did with Doug, I highly recommend it. It will give you a better understanding of how ICDs actually work: ruclips.net/video/uxjdbE_rEzU/видео.htmlsi=dIQaa2UfGIQz6fdk.
@@heartwarriorproject my cousin had one and a friend has one. No thank you. I have a fear of electricity and there's no way man
I have an ICD for 2 years now. .Off course I am older, so it is a bit easier to except how it influences my looks. But at 52 my thoughts were: I am (a bit) proud of my scar. Because it shows I had to go through some tough times, and still are...So why shame about it? People are lucking not needing one. And otherwise there are lots of people with different diseases. So dr. Samuel Is right!! I guess he learned it by listening to his patients.
I agree. To me, scars represent the battles you've gone through and overcome. That's why I call this project The Heart Warrior Project. As warriors, we have faced battles and survived them. That's something to be proud of. But again, we are all different as individuals; what means something to one person may not mean the same to another. However, like you, I really liked what Dr. Sears said in the interview about scars. They show wisdom.
What's the warranty period of Medtronic icd MRI S? Is the patient given a warranty document for the device upon implantation?
Another brilliant episode Jellis! I do feel that the mental impact of living with a heart condition and/or an ICD is so often overlooked. Dr Sears is right….“If you’ve worked on the heart, you’ve worked on the mind”. Never a truer word spoken. Some great coping techniques discussed, and some very thought provoking points made.
Hey Karen, thank you! Dr. Sears shared quite a few incredible, quotable phrases. Great to hear you found the episode helpful. Hope to talk to you again soon at one of our next Cardiac Comeback Crew meetups! :)
My ICD was installed on 2021 due to I went into code blue in the hospital. I received strong shocks...the last one was so f,*** hard it knocked me down and I was like imbalance..then on March of this year , I started to have chest pains, shortens of breath, dizziness and ended up in the hospital Afterwards, I had no control of fainting spells, dizzy spells, shortens of breath. It is so depressing, because you don't know again if you are going to be shocked. The medications were adjusted, and slowly but still going through the fainting spells that comes and unpredictably. Dizzy spells is slowly balancing. Cardiologist had a serious talk about my health challenges. I would need a heart transplant. The constant shocking of the defibrillator causes your heart to get scared and that's is not good. One day at the time..that's all I can do.
One day at a time indeed. ❤️ Wishing you so much strength through this all. And thank you for sharing.
