Not All Leatherwork is Art

Hot take! Fight me! Hold up...it's my take on my niche. There is art in leatherwork but not mine...not yet. But leather is one of the most wonderful mediums I have ever played with...and I'll tell you why. This video is brought to you by a few conversations with real people...rather than just talking to my creepy AI assistant. Thank you Zeke and Erin. You both inspired something! Like, share, s...

It's the little touches, innit? a pocket, a strap, a flap, a purse catch, a laser burn, a custom color. We're turning commodities into custom projects with the end goal of getting someone exactly what they want...while not starving ourselves to death. This video has been brought to you by Husqvarna mower electrical systems, which I need to fix before I just call Farmer John to come hay the yard.

it's one of the basics you gotta know to advance into the cooler projects you Really want to do. Practice doing a straight line, then a curved line, then move to 3D. A litany of things I learned along the way...painfully. I have a drawer full of the wrong stuff. Don't be like me! Leatherwork for beginners on a budget
Had to comment. Great down to earth video. I mean, didn't ask for much, included the leather and mentioned the next steps. Thanks for not making these "10 essencial tools every leather worker must have" click baits.
Thank you. Totally agree with the clickbait sentiment. I was sick of them even before AI became a thing .
Lovely explanation, really valuable to start with leather ambitions...
Good! Mission accomplished, thank you. And you win five cool points for using "lovely" rather than any other word.
Paramedic for 25 years, former Army medic in 90s, I'm new to Leatherwork, I like the outlook. I've failed alot so far, a few nice looking projects. I know I'll fail way more, that's how I'll learn, videos like yours and others, I treat as tutorials. Subbed!
Hats off to you. You have already accomplished what 90% can't or won't so this leather thing is just gravy. No life or death here...just your own expectations to fight off.
@@brokenbearleather673 cheers brother
Imma the kitchen table, Brother. And I agree...
We have concensus! That's it...I'm calling it a day and working on some aged bourbon.
A carpenters work can be inspiring and even breath taking but its not art. A wood carver on the other hand is creating art. Sculptures or folk art. The same can be said for evety trade and leatherwork is more like a trade than art. Ive been doing it professionally (part time) for 3 years now and some things i do is art. Tooling designs most definitely is art. But when i make a bag, sheath or rifle bag with inlayed exotic skin, intetsting coloured thread stitched in, conchos and rivets and even stitching styles might make an imaginative and visually pleasing creation but its not art. Its just like a beautiful kitchen with brass taps and marble bemch tops with fashionable colours. Haha that's a long winded way to say i agree with you. 😂 Subbed btw
I agree with being long winded...it's my specialty. Thank you for the sub. I am painfully close to 1000 and you matter!
Some things I agree with, some are just nonsensical. Yes, you need to understand who you want to sell to and what they will buy and pay for. But it takes 2-5 years to really get a business rolling. Just depends on what you are willing to invest to get TO those buyers. I would rather sell one $300 backpack a week, rather than 300 little pouches. It takes less time to make one backpack verses 300 pouches. Your breakdown for your business is a recipe for disaster. You'll never make any real money with those margins. 15% tax? Yup. Labor should be about the same as materials, or at least a lot closer to it. You want to make good money per man hour, then you need to make products that command a higher price tag. A welder makes more money an hour compared to the person taking your order at the local fast food restaurant, because the welder makes the company more money per man hour. The crafter selling 20-30 dollar items can't get paid the same per hour as the crafter who sells 100-500 dollar items. And your business profit margin should certainly be more than single digits. More like 20% or more. "Profits" is what grows your business and makes investments in machines to be more productive. Profits pay for better tools that outlast cheap bargain junk. Profits pay for advertising. Profits are the tools to GROW your business. Profit is not a dirty word. Let us know where you are getting hides exactly the same size too. No matter who you buy from it varies. Your square inch cost per hide is bunk. One may be 22 foot, another 25, another 21. It varies. I get there is no need to be super precise, but with a whopping 5% margin, you have zero room for error. Raising prices is a NORMAL part of business. Has postage held it's price since 2017? Has your blacksmith's been holding off prices? That sheath makes part of the VALUE of the knife. They are not going to go back to selling bare knives and think they will get the same business. People will shop elsewhere. My prices go up 3-10% every single year. Why? Because my costs go up, both personal and business. How many years are you working someplace without a raise? No one is going to do that. Look, I own a business and leather craft is a side business/enjoyable hobby. You can run your business any way you choose, but you will never really make any money screwing around. You worry about competing with other people like the Amish. Why? No matter what you are competing with someone. Welcome to the global market. Just because you don't sell online, lots of people do. Lots of shoppers buy online too. You are competing with leather crafters, and you are competing with import goods. People who aren't willing to compete are generally the people who make shoddy stuff. You don't make shoddy stuff do you? People either want your stuff at the price you set, or they don't. It's your job to convince people why your stuff is worth the money. Why it's better. If you can't do that, then they don't have any real reason to buy from you.
That's all fair commentary. These are my choices based on my market, and my willingness to grow (or not). They're certainly not the end all answers but booyah, this video served it's purpose of opening the conversation rather than all of us scurrying about in the dark and guessing. Some dumbass had to lay bare their cards for all of us to learn. And for better or worse...I am that dumbass.
Bwahaha im right there with you on the backpack
Ahahahaha
Thanks for your perspective
Thank you for being here. Without you, I'm...well...only me.
@@brokenbearleather673 understand that!!
I love my sheath and holster u made! I show them both off every chance i get!
"15% God damn them"...😂😂😂😂 u aint lying there man!!
Looooove your videos. I'm Tanzanian. Started learning and making leather pieces as a side hustle and I'm learning everyday. So many things make sense listening to your videos. I prefer hand stitching too. Love when real leather lovers walk to my stand at a pop up market and touch, sniff and gaze at a piece in a way only a leather lover do. I don't necessarily make millions but the satisfaction of making special pieces for my happy clients is so satisfying. Thank you for this 🎉
I'm so touched by this, it inspires me to keep on keeping on. Thank you for the kind words. Great to know we're all connected by our craft, our successes, and our trials.
Every project I work on requires me to solve a problem or fix a mistake.
"That which does not kill us..." Getting better every time!
I appreciate the honesty! That in itself is going to be a help for a person to push themselves to start a new skill.
Thank you. I hope so. It's a fascinating craft. Oh, and my basement smells amazing!
This was superb!
Aw, thank you. I needed a confidence boost today. And there you were.
The cheapest source of leather is a thrift shop. Go in and check out women's purses and other leather items. If you go out walking, you will find leather items that have been thrown out that may be useful.
Hey Christian, my buddy just watched this video and had a suggestion for the top knot...he suggests to using a surgeon's knot. Thoughts?
Oh man, now I'm down the rabbit hole. Orvis tippet knot is looking like the leader. Keep in mind, I haven't tied any of these and they all look complex as hell without a very patient tutor. I'll keep reading but thanks to your buddy for the distraction.
The Donald Is Gonna Win And Google Is Wrong In Banning It!!!
Ah yes, leatherwork and politics. A long underserved market needing to be tapped. You fukin kidding me?
Why do you put the strap on the blade side, should be over top so it cant be cut
I'm picking up what you're putting down. In that case, there wasn't enough bite on the backside of the guard to keep it secure. It's a risk for sure but the lesser of two evils.
Genius! I love your calm admission to failure and fortitude to getting it done with a great solution.
Thank you. Disclaimer: I edited out the cursing and throwing things...pretty sure a skivver got stuck in a support beam.
🤣
Could have done without the music being three times as loud as the rest of the video. The rest of the video is excellent.
Oh man, I'm slowly learning. Soooo much I don't even think about until it's too late. Thank you.
Very helpful! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Thanks! It helped me!
Super! Glad you found something useful.
I have been in that situation of cutting the 1 1/2 to short. I like your fix :-) and the video was entertaining.
Excellent, thank you. I'm fighting the online fantasy that everything goes perfectly the first time. My daughter is struggling through trying new things...and failing. So, I have skin in that game.
Thanks for making a video that isn't just an amazon cart. Those of us that like to buy tools at auctions/garage sales/retiring tradesmen probably have most of these things, or could make them, or have something that would do the job instead of buying more cheap crap that you probably already had. I love the sacrificial-make-your-own-tool bin!
Some call me a cheapskate. Some call me an upcylcler. Some call me the gangster of love. All I know is that nothing is out of your reach if you're willing to do a little extra work and think a little creatively.
Leather thimble. Freaking ingenious.
Ha! I think they whacked my comment (promoting self harm). Let's try this: yeah I got tired of sabbing myself with the dull end so I armored up. Pretty much the opposite of self harm.
"Once you discover the joys of dieing"
I was saving up some cash...aaaaand it's gone. Because I tried tried oil based Pro dye and now I'm spoiled. Ugh.
Great video. I'm just getting started in leather work that really helped. Thank you.
Thank you! I'm over here living on a steady diet caffeine and validation.
Very nice video!
Thank you. It means a lot.
Thank You!
Very welcome. Thanks for subscribing. It's a beautiful vote of confidence.
Great video. Sound advice. I just need a basement..
Ahahahaha! Throw a log in the kitchen as a "workbench" and skip the flooding, mice, and spiders.
Dang bro!! Mad respect!!! Thar looked intimidating as heck. I have been toying with the idea of making one, and still kicking around the idea. But i sure going to try and think it through lol It turned out great though! Was looking for ideas on knife sheaths, and came across your channel. Subbed right away!
Thank you, sir. "Intimidating" was the right word but funny thing is, the more mistakes I make, the more I find very few things are unfixable. "We don't make mistakes. We opted for a different design!"
Amazing work and design
Aw, thank you! Leatherwork is full of niches...and armor is out of mine. I guess the lesson is to take that risk and surprise yourself.
Leather scraps from you to practice with would be cool, big enough to make small projects.
What a great suggestion! I'll keep that one in my pocket for the next giveaway.
Thank you bear for all that information it was very great information know and I'm just getting into it and I'm liking it thank you sir
Thank you, sir! So, what's the next project?
@@brokenbearleather673 I am currently working on a leather pick guard and tremolo cover for Epiphone style Stratocaster solid body Guitar. I could not find anyone in the world that had a template or could make a plastic pick guard and they wanted a lot of money for it so I said what the heck. I'll make my own and do my own stamping so right now I have the outline cut I have cavities I have to punch out for pickups and volume controls and once after I get that all done I'm done at Black and I'm going to stamp it with stamping kit that I just recently bought. I just recently retired and I work on guitars and this will be a great opportunity.
Congratulations to Matt, Eric, Leslie, and Wayfinder! Winners have been emailed and I'm waiting, excitedly, to hear what they want. Stay tuned for the next milestone contest!
Liked your video. I just started goofing around a couple of months ago and wish I'd seen this before making a couple of typical newbie mistakes. (Plenty more to come too). Good content and points made along with your pleasant personality made this a delight to watch. Thanks from a new subscriber.
Thanks! Your feedback keeps me doing it. At least you caught it earli..er before buying too much you may not need...I hope.
Enjoyed watching and learning some of the confusing techniques i"ve been having trouble with. Thanks for the knowledge and passing on the craft to so many others. Thank You Broken Bear Leather!
Awesome! I'm glad it helped. More to come. Stay tuned.

That seems to be a theme with everyone. I never knew. Thank you.
Is there a way to do this without breaking the side?
There are but they are all hard and ugly.
I'm going to do this.
You damn right you are! And you'll find your groove and your niche. Get after it!! I'm cheering for you.
"Every leather worker person has *that* box full of scrap" Sir, I feel so seen. That's so real. You didn't even got into leather carving, which is another Rabbit hole on it's own. I started with a cheap kit from Amazon, now I am doing like 6 different projects for Christmas
Ugh, I'm a terrible carver and a worse shader. I'll leave that to the real artists.
Very cool thanks for the vid I've been bit by the knife bugs and now I really wanna learn leather work and how to make a sheath! Since I'm left handed I wanna make my own instead of special order some synthetic fake leather
Thank you. We are 10%ers! Go lefties!
Thank you for this nice simple explanation, appreciate it.
Excellent! Hope it starts a new journey for you.
Haha ! Quick and sweet video! Thanks
Mission accomplished! I can be...vebose.
Cool, honest video. Cool music, and I absolutely love that scout bag! Thanks for sharing! Cheers from Broken Hill, Outback Australia... (at least something's broken here as well...)
Cheers mate! I hope Broken Hill doesn't have as many things that want humans dead as the rest of the country.
I'm just getting into this "craft" / "Hobby". Just got some tools and waiting till after my daughter's wedding in about a week before I start doing anything. I've been watching alot of videos and wondered why you don't use any adhesives?
That's a great question. It most cases, glue isn't necessary. I have used it to tack something into place if sliding around was important to avoid. But it gets on the edges and it won't burnish so you'll have a glossy run and suddenly, dull spot. It gets on the face and the piece is ruined. I use Aleene's tacky glue and love it.
@@brokenbearleather673 Ok makes sense. I was going back and forth between trying Aleene's or Fiebings. I was actually leaning towards Fiebings. No desire to use Barge or Wellwood contact cement. That's all I need is my wife and daughters breaking my horns about odors. Lol

A little help. I'm not sure what that could be.
When making videos for RUclips, please rotate the phone 90 degrees 🤪
Ayup, learned that lesson immediately and all the others since have displayed correctly.
What about adding the rubber from a scrap bike innertube on your board u use to save your workbench when poking your holes?
Ooooo, good one. Old stall mats are hard to cut but make great poundo boards. I've been using 6" cutoffs of 1x4 pine and they are better than you'd think.
Awesome video! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
