There's nothing wrong with using Thanatos to do damage, but having him out for too long is unwise, increases the chances of him taking hits (especially when the boss uses that homing laser attack) In this case, your ample supply of soul recovery items allowed you to use this brute force method, would have been much harder if Thanatos kicked it.
