I'm a mechanic and I carry a modded surge as my multitool of choice. I used to carry a rebar, but it was just a little small.
I could definitely see how the bigger Surge would be beneficial in that line of work. What do you find yourself pulling out most?
My “system” is my 2 Leatherman Surges… one in the vehicle, the other edc for nearly 10 years. I use it daily, will probably never wear it out, still performs like new and I have no reason for anything else. Best part, bought them when they use to retail for $80-90 😂
An excellent system for sure. It’s been a long time since I had a space for each tool 😆
Ah yes, the nailbreakers 3000
😆
@@zachlyndeYT still a very nice multitool, I got a Spirit MX clip and I'm impressed
@ Absolutely. Love mine, though I’d also like to try the clip version(s).
What a cool tool to add to my Surge . . . just ordered the slim pick one. 👍💯😎
Excellent! I hope it serves you well!
Agree... I carry a P2 and also have a 90s pst and the plier head is superior... If you clamp down on it it does not bind a bit... can't say that with later models... The P2 does bind but it's still a better head then the wave +
Good point; I haven’t had that issue with the pliers but I have heard that from others.
Will it get darker if you leave it longer?
It seems to get darker and more saturated the longer you go, but there also seems to be diminishing returns once the bulk of the dying is done.
The leatherman surge Scissors are also very good
Absolutely! I tested those also and they were top tier. I might have cut that part for brevity
Make yourself a drawer on wheels you can lay them out in one level and roll it under the bed. Put a locking lid on it if there are kids running all over the house.
🤔 interesting idea. I like keeping them near the bench but I could see this working out well for some collectors.
i like it
Haha thanks, it’s genuinely been a huge help since I got it finished off.
I am not a fan of the Center Drive. The Dual Force is definitely different and nice to have around. The Surge, Super Tool 300, and I carry the Knifeless Rebar. I do trade work and the smaller size of the Rebar really is awesome for smaller spots, but durable enough to handle the work. The Rebar and a small water pump pliers, the Rebar bit adapter, bits, extensions and a ratchet bit wrench lives in my pocket tool pouch, but the Rebar lives in my coin pocket. The phillips being longer reach is my favorite thing about the Rebar over only bit adapter multitools, but yet it can use bits with the bit adapter. The Leatherman Super Tool 300 would be a great option, with that in mind. My Gerber Dual Force stays in a belt sheath and I carry it sometimes. I also always have a Victorinox Rambler for smaller screws and sometimes need the small knife to cut something in a tight spot. I love Victorinox for swiss army knives, Gerber for something different, and Leatherman for my basic multitool. I am definitely not a fan boy of 1 company, even though I primarily recommend Leatherman. Victorinox is a great companion swiss army knife, which is why I sometimes carry my Victorinox Companion. I do electrical and basic construction, and demo. I have been getting into lite plumbing as well. A simple solder replacement section or basic sink plumbing only. I will get a plumber for anything else. The Dual Force is pretty good for sink drains, but it barely fits on the drain nuts. I hope a 6 or 7 inch water pump pliers multitool would be available, because I would buy that right away.
Good insight, thanks for sharing!
hey zach bro, i am a new sub for ya here and i am a multi-tool n gear fanatic as well, i am a u.s. military/marine vet 93' to 97' active ! and i only have email , n i def. wanna talk more and i just subb'd to your email list , thanks n we'll talk soon bro > tom !
Glad to have you on board!
hey thanks n we'll talk soon > tom !
Very nice indeed i like it
Thanks!
All my knives and multitools are in a drawer. If I don't like a knife or multitool, I'll get rid of it. I prefer gifting them; the money is already gone, and I can make someone really happy.
That’s very generous of you. I gift a lot of Swiss Army knives but I don’t know many people who are interested in the bigger tools.
All that is Probably $500.00 or maybe $600.00 Factory brand new right? everything together.
I’m afraid it may be more than that even 😬. But I almost never pay full price, thankfully. Lots of flea market and antique mall finds.
Fair case for Fair case for 2 each. Thanks for the video You should rename your YT to Multiparts Channel or something like that to be consistent with your business brand Cheers
Gotta justify it somehow 😆. I may well change the channel name in the future, but for now I want the content to stand for itself. Many of the videos don’t apply directly to anything we sell in the shop so I don’t want to turn it all into shameless self promotion. Probably overthinking it though 🤣
Just put them on a big shelf/book case Each company gets one shelf Then you don’t have to rummage to find what you are looking for because they will all be displayed and separated already :)
nice
Thanks
Great question and I agree with what you had to say on the subject. I saw the last one “yellow” would be just considered a traditional knife Doesn’t matter the maker. One blade or multiple blade would be traditional in that style in my book and the Vic or even old school camper style slip joint multi tools with the can opener/bottle opener awl/punch would be a multi tool. Haha anything with more than one type of implement 😁
Got the same one, but sadly barely use it since I almost always have a bespoke tool for the job nearby anyway, and i dont want to scratch it :( I always marvel at it though.
Yeah that high shine polish has a way of making me not want to use it either. It sure is an incredible piece of engineering, though.
I might have to pick up some of these multi part tool's to fix my super tool 300 🤔
Heck yeah!
Nice job I'm thinking about getting the Compact for Christmas 🤔
It’s definitely worth it imo.
you should be "screwing" from the screw, not the standoff, its more material you are rotating so its harder
You are correct. As the old saying goes, the camera makes you lose 10 IQ points 🤦
I'm in the trade of having tools on me and not having to go to the toolbox for little things I need to do. The "Tripsaver" desription is perfect.
Glad you agree! I think these tools sometimes get mistaken as a replacement for a proper tool kit, unfortunately.
@ 90% of the time it is enough for me. I’m not one to do heavy work a lot though. Opening a PC, yard work, and the occasional cutting of wire, cordage, or opening a box. I’d never assemble furniture or use it in place of a good pair of pliers, a wrench, screwdriver, ect. If I was spending more than 5-10 minutes on something.
@ absolutely. They’re a lifesaver when finding the tool would take longer than the task itself 😆
What are your thoughts on the leatherman OHT if you have any? I use mine at work in the trades every day and I absolutely love it. I’m sad that I can’t get anymore as they are discontinued
I haven’t handled one yet, unfortunately, but it’s on the (long) list of tools I want to add to my collection.
You know what one I'd pick 😅
😆
which 1?
@ check the username 😆
To me, one of the biggest downsides of the PST (like the Rebar) is the difficulty in disassembling & maintaining it. Those pesky screws are just a pain to unscrew. Nowadays, I think everyone should get the multitool they can afford to mess up & then work there way up from there to finding out what their real needs are. Just my two cents.
Thats why we make wrenches that match those “pesky screws”. Makes adjusting these them a breeze. I very much agree about only buying what you can afford to damage/lose. The warranty on the newer tools takes a bit of the risk away I suppose.
I've had that tool for many years. I only wish that it had scissors. My favorite Leatherman sits on my desk and is the Sidekick - smaller than the Original, but still has all the tools I need (except scissors!).
Have you tried the PST II? The scissors aren’t perfect but at least it’s got them
@@zachlyndeYT I use my Leatherman Micra if I need scissors...
@ that will do it!
Maybe as a survival tool or for a bugout bag or something like that, but for everyday use I think modern ergonomics and materials have come way too far to go back to the PST. Doesnt help that these are so rare, out of warranty and valuable as collectors items either. Just a personal opinion of course.
Fair points. Ergonomics when using the pliers especially could be improved (and have been on subsequent models). Still compelling for $35 bucks on eBay, though.
@@zachlyndeYT That low I can see the appeal too, but isnt that mostly just parts / broken ones? Ive seen some good condition ones being more expensive than a brand new Arc and unopened ones going for eye watering prices
@ there’s certainly those listings out there but I see them go for around the $35 mark pretty regularly; not in like-new condition but also not in complete shambles. Still, like you said the warranty is up so it’s not apples to apples with newer modes.
@@zachlyndeYT Iiiiii will look for one for the collection then! I used to have one 20 years ago but life happened and I have no idea where it decided to jump off the journey.
@ good luck!
Very first multitool: Classic SD First proper multitool: PST or Surge I will defend the surge because while it’s overkill for most. It has everything. So it easier for you to know exactly what you will use your tool for the most. I realized after edc the Surge for a year. I didn’t want the weight. But I didn’t want to lose the easy of use of my well used Surge. So now I have a Free P4 for EDC. It’s the best. (Note. I am 6’2 and have gorilla hands. So if that’s not you. Then subtract Surge and go Wave+)
Good point, the Classic SD should not be overlooked. I love the Surge too, but carrying it is a bit of a commitment, which is why I'd recommend a smaller tool to start, and then upgrade if you can handle it.
Any ideas on mods for the powerpint? I was thinking of trying to switch out the scissors with victorinox scissors and some of the oher tools. I love the size and the pliers but the tools are so soft and wonky.
Unfortunately not; it's such a unique size that I expect any mods would need to be ground to fit. You may be on the right track with Victorinox tools, as they'll have a smaller pivot that you can drill out to match the Powerpint.
It never had and never will be the best multitool. If you really want the best multitool ever get yourself a Victorinox Swisstool. But the best multitool is always subjective. Enjoy your "best" multitool as i do mine. Greetings and a wonderful pre-Christmas time.
I don’t disagree with the sentiment at all. There’s certainly something captivating about Victorinox’s pliers-based offerings. I think it’s a discussion worth having, though, if only to help refine what’s “best” for ourselves in the process.
I keep hearing this, but I was issued a Swisstool when I served and I absolutely hated it, everyone I worked with did too. The tools would bend from normal use, the knives went dull extremely fast and it was just awkward to hold/use. Iirc the plier head would lock up from dust and debris too. It scared me away from ever getting one of those again, maybe they are better now?
@@kvernesdotten wow that’s a bit of a horror story. I’ve got a spirit that I think is a beautiful piece of engineering/manufacturing but I have to admit I haven’t put it through its paces to see how it holds up.
@@kvernesdotten As i wrote, very subjective. When you have a multitool what does the job for you perfect, take it. I have 50+ knives and tools from Victorinox and would not change to another brand. I am a light user of my multitool also, means i do not abuse my tools. When i want to cut large amounts of cardboard, i always do it with an interchangeable utility blade and not with my multitool or other blade i have to sharpen. There is always a perfect tool to do a job and a multitool is not great doing jobs but it can do many different jobs. Yes, a blade of victorinox gets dull fast, but when you know that you can deal with it. ;-)
Great multi tool i love my leatherman bond it's a great little edc same tools as the pst
Wow I never realized the Bond has the exact same toolset. I’ll have to get my hands on one to test out. Does the extra contouring on the handle add much bulk? I’d assume the comfort is much improved.
@zachlyndeYT I've got my leatherman bond in my pocket right now you can also put a pocket clip on it from the free multi tools its the same pocket clip I haven't got a pst but i know the leatherman bond is the 21st century pst same tools but better it's a very nice multi tool for edc when I'm not working ill have my bond in my pocket it's a very nice size for edc thanks for your reply 👍
One of Leatherman's coolest designs
Its definitely intriguing. I’m gonna do some work on mine, I think, to see where it fits in for me.
Very comparable? Yes the mini sailor and otacle p1 are the same tool. Edit: it just occurred to me you may have been being sarcastic and knew this fact already. Lol
I’m no stranger to making a fool of myself 😁. I kind of suspected they were the same but since they appear to have different scales and I haven’t looked too closely yet I wasn’t certain. I’ll have to dig deeper when it comes time to record the full video.
@@zachlyndeYT Yeah me too lol. Enjoy your channel. Have a good one.
Little brother to the MUT
Do I need to get a MUT next?
Yessir
@@dpb1973 alright adding it to the list!
My wife used to make jewelry. There are some really cool pliers out there for it.
Oh for sure. I love exploring different trades/hobbies for techniques and tools I can steal, and jewelers seem to have an abundance of pliers for every different situation.
I forgot to ask this in the video but: What tools do you guys recommend as the best multitool gift? Leave a comment to help those searching in the future!
I think the leatherman bond is a very good 1st multi tool for someone getting into multi tools and the price is good i think it's a good 1st multi tool and it's made by leatherman i like it
@ Yeah the Bond would be a great first tool.
mp600 'pro scout' doesn't seem to exist anymore. not on Gerber site now.
I noticed that, but it actually hasn’t been on their site for like a year iirc. Im not convinced their website as comprehensive a catalog as you might expect.
100% big brother, Every Leatherman I've got in the last 5yrs I've had to oil than wack the pivot with a hammer and punch. there is a video explaining it in detail and 1 wack makes em almost perfect
Yeah I think I’ve seen that video. I’ve found luck with the squeeze-and-twist method myself. Stuff pliers isn’t a deal breaker tbh i think I just got used to the Arc lately.
As a wildfire fighter in BC, Canada, I love this multitool. It's by no means everything you want in a apocalypse scenario, but it has everything I need for day to day on the fireline and around base. I've use every tool it has (save for the plastic doodads) and wouldn't trade it for anything
That’s really cool to hear. I could totally see this being perfect in that line of work. I’m gonna have to put some thought into where this could fit in my life, and maybe break it in a bit in the meantime. Thanks for sharing!
I think your's had a defect with the blade lock. I think you could potentially contact leatrehmeman about this and get a replacement
For sure, I have no doubt they’d fix it for most users. I think it’s something I can fix in this case and since it’s not for personal use I’m fine living with it for now. Gotta love that warranty though!
I will agree this tool isn’t flawless but my lock worked perfectly right out of the box.
I would expect that’s the case for most but this missed the mark I’m afraid.
At last an honest review. Keep it up.
Glad to oblige!
i'm with you on this one I'm not a fan of this multi tool
Yeah, I was expecting just a beefy skeletool but it’s not for me.
I wonder what the vinegar and salt does to the chemical composition/reaction during the process. You’re right, those scales came out beautifully!
Yeah I wasn’t sure but figured I’d better add them all lol. I’m guessing they act as catalysts to speed up the reaction (same reason boiling water is better than cold water for this).
@@zachlyndeYT that makes sense. Thanks!
It’s a decent idea & I applaud your ingenuity… but $30 is insane 😂
Thanks for the feedback; I totally get it may not be worth it to everyone. We’ll definitely take it under advisement for future products.
Great video! Just got this exact model after years of using a leatherman/SOG. Looking forward to it!
Enjoy!
