This is from a tape I got in the early 1980s titled "Palauan Music from Guam". A fabulous example of solid guitar playing featured in the music of that time. Does anyone know who the singer and guitarist is/are? I've placed the lyrics in with the music, but many of them are incorrect. The lyrics came from the "fish n taro" website from a few years back, that is no longer available. Any help fix...

This song was written by Ethel Bassey and Wayland Chamber and recorded by Patsy Cline back in 1958. As I was playing it the other night I thought how much these lyrics are similar to many Palauan songs, so I took a stab at trying to do a translation. Probably more than a few mistakes, but hopefully I got close. Let me know of how to fix my bad grammar. I was challenged by the original words of ...

This palauan song was likely written in the 1970s and tells the story of someone receiving a letter from their sweetheart bearing the bad news that they must remain apart longer, and thus not continue their relationship. It isn't clear why they are apart perhaps the letter writer is in Guam, Hawaii or the mainland for school and needs to stay longer than originally planned. Perhaps the letter i...

This Palauan song probably originally comes from the 1950s, carrying a melody from the Japanese Enka (an old country music) and lots of Japanese words (modified a bit to fit Palauan pronunciation). I have a wonderful recording from the Bai ra Metal from the late 1970s that was the inspiration for this version. "Anata" is a Japanese word that translates to "dear" or "sweetheart" in english, a te...

This is an old Palauan song that I learned in about 1981 from some friends. I'm not sure who the original author was. That's me doing the singing and playing mandolin and guitar. It is such a sad song, appropriately played late at night while sitting alone feeling lonely. A song about two lovers separated by a long distance, long before the days of email and skype, who can only write to each ot...
Tilorech

This video and recording came out of a trip to Palau I made in September 2010 to visit some old friends. "Tilorech" is one of my favorite Palauan cha-cha songs and during my trip we took a drive up to Ngerchelong to look for "uchul a Tilorech" (its origin). Tilorech is the name of the small stream behind the Ngerchelong school, and the "diong era Tilorech", shown in the beginning of the video i...

I'm so sad I missed this, considering I lived in the EB for 5yrs (2014-2019). Had I know, I wouldve brought the Palauans to attend.

In fact, I stumbled upon your blog before finding your RUclips channel. I'm slowly working my way through your blog posts. It's really quite encyclopedic and one has to read each post and let it simmer. Also, I would be reading an entry and click on links to the songs or other info and the next thing I know I'm of on a tangent and then I'm trying to figure out where I was or what I was trying to absorb in the first place. The point is, it's so much fun and interesting information and I'm like a kid in a candy store. So glad you are putting together this resource. And the thing is that you know music and you obviously love Palau and those two have merged in your blog to become a wonderful resource. If you visit Palau again, I would really like to meet you. I was actually researching last night the full lyrics for the Angaur song "Mei Ototomo" so that I could put the lyrics to a video of Lisa singing the song when Angaur was featured at the Palau Night Market earlier in October. I filmed the event and am working on posting a video of the singing along with the lyrics. Do you happen to know where I can find the full lyrics? The other neat thing about the song is that it described place names as one takes a journey on a boat down to Angaur, place names that I was clueless about as a kid but now that I know where they are, it just makes the song even more special (my mom is from Angaur). Anyway, this is becoming a lengthy post! But again, if you visit Palau again, I would like to pick your brains and possibly do a video interview for my RUclips Channel . . . Palau Creations by QCP.
