Mengesang a Reng

  • This Palauan song probably originally comes from the 1950s, carrying a melody from the Japanese Enka (an old country music) and lots of Japanese words (modified a bit to fit Palauan pronunciation). I have a wonderful recording from the Bai ra Metal from the late 1970s that was the inspiration for this version.
"Anata" is a Japanese word that translates to "dear" or "sweetheart" in english, a term of endearment used by a woman toward her husband, much like "chochedengei" or "betik ra renguk" (one through whom I have found my heart) in Palauan. My Palauan isn't good enough to understand what caused the troubled heart, but the singer must have done something to cause her (?) sweetheart to become ashamed and troubled.
Thanks to Keizy who helped me with a translation problem. Also, please let me know who was the songwriter and the year it comes from.
Ke kmal mesulang e omes e orrenges -- Jim Geselbracht
    ======
Keizy provided this much better translation for the song. Also, he pointed out that their houses are "kal chacheroid", not "kmal chacheroid" ("not even far from each other" vs. "very far from each other: -- makes a lot more sense when they live in a kekerei el beluu!). Thanks again Keizy:
    --------------------
The woman that troubles my heart
as you wonder without knowing my troubled heart
    As wonders holding my heart
She's elsewhere in this world as I'm in pain
    Before my days end
how will I tell my story
as I hold them true, sweetheart.
I feel ashamed to even trouble you
Our country is a small place
Our houses are not that far from each other
So as I walk on passing by
all I wish is to see a an image of you
Goodbye to the woman that I love so much
You are really the only one to trouble me
So while I hide my feelings from my friends
I shall break my heart to pieces

Congratulations! The number of views has exceeded the Palauan population! Well done, I keep coming back to this version over the years due to the emotion behind it.

In fact, I stumbled upon your blog before finding your RUclips channel. I'm slowly working my way through your blog posts. It's really quite encyclopedic and one has to read each post and let it simmer. Also, I would be reading an entry and click on links to the songs or other info and the next thing I know I'm of on a tangent and then I'm trying to figure out where I was or what I was trying to absorb in the first place. The point is, it's so much fun and interesting information and I'm like a kid in a candy store. So glad you are putting together this resource. And the thing is that you know music and you obviously love Palau and those two have merged in your blog to become a wonderful resource. If you visit Palau again, I would really like to meet you. I was actually researching last night the full lyrics for the Angaur song "Mei Ototomo" so that I could put the lyrics to a video of Lisa singing the song when Angaur was featured at the Palau Night Market earlier in October. I filmed the event and am working on posting a video of the singing along with the lyrics. Do you happen to know where I can find the full lyrics? The other neat thing about the song is that it described place names as one takes a journey on a boat down to Angaur, place names that I was clueless about as a kid but now that I know where they are, it just makes the song even more special (my mom is from Angaur). Anyway, this is becoming a lengthy post! But again, if you visit Palau again, I would like to pick your brains and possibly do a video interview for my RUclips Channel . . . Palau Creations by QCP.
