Why is the moon so low -- especially in the fall?
Have you ever noticed that, at certain times of the year, the moon seems peculiarly low in the sky? In this video, I explain the science behind that -- and I've tossed in a little Astronomy 101 lesson along the way. :)

I had the privilege of interviewing primatologist Frans de Waal at length in 2012 at the Emory National Primate Research Center near Atlanta. (At that time I was working on a CBC "Ideas" documentary series called The Science of Morality.) In this clip, de Waal discusses conceptions of fairness and justice that some primate species (such as capuchin monkeys) appear to have.

Owen Gingerich on how Galileo changed science
Просмотров 93Год назад
We remember Galileo Galilei for his many discoveries in astronomy and physics but more than that, he changed how we think of science itself. Excerpt from a 2009 interview with Harvard astronomer and historian of science Owen Gingerich, by Dan Falk. Sadly Dr. Gingerich passed away in May 2023.

Copernicus (1473-1543) revolutionized our view of the universe and of our own place within it. In this video we look at his life and times, and his science and we visit Warsaw, Torun, Krakow, and Frombork as we follow in Copernicus's footsteps in today's Poland. Video by Dan Falk (from a visit to Poland in 2018).

    One of the weirdest unexpected things is traveling to the southern hemisphere and realizing the Moon appears to be upside down. Really, traveling between the northern and southern hemispheres, since the Moon up north would also be upside down for southies. Living on a tilted globe gives us some trippy features.

    The moon is lowest in summer. Remember, the moon follows the ecliptic, which is lowest in summer, because that's where the sun is in winter.

    • @danfalkscience
      @danfalkscience 15 дней назад

      But that would be a full moon, and as I say in the video, we're less likely to think of a full moon as being "unusually low" because we tend to notice it when it's just coming up above the horizon -- when (of course) it has to be low. In contrast to the first quarter moon, which is prominently visible in the south as the sun sets.

    Yeah that seems fun. I can't remember what I was doing exactly that day, I was probably in school (high school). I vaguely remember the safety tips around it. I think it may have been too cloudy to see clearly that day out here in Oakville. Watching the 2024 eclipse was fun, the way the sky and heat etc. change as totality approaches is surprising.

    I live in Brampton and my parents live in Mississauga, so I’m gonna pick them up and drive down to Niagara on the lake area. Initially, I plan to go on my own Fort Erie, but they’ve been advertising about it and I’ve heard it’s going to be a, you know what type of show down there. Crystal Beach look like a good location which is just outside Fort Erie on the Bank of Lake Erie, but I’m concerned about not getting down there in time. Then I got a email from a vineyard that we are wine club members of for an invitation, so I’m gonna go there and at least I can take my parents and there’s facilities for them to use as needed. Really upset. The weather isn’t looking to be forecasted for the greatest that late afternoon. 😢

    It's not about seeing the eclipse .. it's what the eclipse is all about. April 8th begins the New Year from Yahuah's perfect calendar. The Pagans, aka "Christians" wholly reject Heavenly Father for JeZEUS who is the LORD of the SLAVE. No longer a son or daughter of Heavenly Father, Christians love the SLAVERY JeZEUS brings to them. Even tossing them to the lions did nothing to stop their pagan ways ... Judgment may be falling on the Patriots and Christians who have sold God's property by voting ... a contract, social contract which Heavenly Father warned us about!

    I am concerned!! There is a black hole going around the earth. Which in turn is very dangerous. So the Eclipse is earth, sun, and moon. What happens if the moon or the sun touches the black hole at the time of the Eclipse. Are we all history on April 8th 2024. I don't know!! Just putting it out there!! Never know what can happen!! I hope I am wrong!!
