Replacing a Stolen Catalytic Converter

Someone stole the catalytic converter from my 2007 Toyota Corolla. This is a very simple DIY repair that can save you thousands in labor costs. If you live in California, make sure you purchase a catalytic converter that is approved by the state. The repair was successful. You can still hear an exhaust leak at the end, but that was present before this repair.

    I just bought a 2010 Corolla and I’m always dizzy when I drive 😢. The garage I bought it from changed a gasket « on top of the muffler » they said, because it was too small and it fell inside the muffler. But the sound it made was not a leaky muffler but a wobbly metal sound. Since I’m still dizzy, I wonder if it could be the exhaust manifold too. The car has only 89,000 km (approximately 55,000 miles), and no rust.

    So clean. Everything looks like it's been in the ocean for five years in the rust belt. Looks like all you needed was a gasket. My studs on my 2009 are almost gone, the threads are barely there and I don't even know how I'll get them out to change them. But it's not leaking yet.

    Ehhh... if you use RTV, and you really didn't need to, but you are supposed to hand tighten the cover bolts, let the RTV set up usually overnight, then tighten to 60 then 80. All you really did was push it out and inside your engine tightening while not set up, really serving 0 purpose.

    • @jaredsprojectsandgear
      @jaredsprojectsandgear 6 месяцев назад

      With standard RTV you would be correct. Per the instructions on the can of Permetex "The Right Stuff": "Assemble parts within 5 minutes, tightening to torque specifications." Appreciate your concern!

    If you Google “Ford 300 oil pan gasket rail replacement “ you’ll find a few killer step by step tutorials over on the Ford Truck Forum….if you are going to do this job in frame then you might want to consider replacing your water pump, harmonic balancer, timing chain/gears, and a few other key components; you’ll already be in there breaking those parts free ( to fully access the oil pan and its forward section) so you’ll basically have a guaranteed no fail engine when done-those parts are cheap , and you’ll have great peace of mind down the road. Like 300 plus thousand miles worth as the 300 is bombproof as you know👌🏽

    • @jaredsprojectsandgear

      I've heard oil pump is good to do as well. Im also concerned the rear main may be leaking.

    • @FIGGY65
      @FIGGY65 6 месяцев назад

      YES! I completely forgot about the oil pump and rear main as I had a LONG day yesterday before posting. The rear main, and forward balancer seal. That thread is a Doosey and it has tons of great suggestions on which gasket set to use ( new pan bolts are mandatory) and a step by step tutorial as well. There’s also a recommendation for replacing the OEM distributor drive gear with a modern hardened steel ( or bronze?) version and accompanying roll pin. Apparently at some point certain years of the distributors start shearing off pins/gears. The beauty of doing the full pan tear out for this job is that you can do an excellent visual inspection of the crank and rods, pistons and bearings. You can also clean the years of buildup from inside the oil pan. These motors can go to 400K miles with good PM.

    You are doing great work! The color “Canvas White” in Rustoleum Stop-Rust aerosol is a near dead on match to factory Wimbledon White. It’s like 7 bucks a can. It’s a fantastic paint You can use SEM self etching black aerosol primer over any bare metal work that you do, then topcoat with Rustoleum ( or Duplicolor ; DC makes Rustoleum’s primers) gray filler and/or sealer primers. I would get that roof taken care of soon…Take the rust down in the worst spots, treat it, and feather the good remaining areas of Wimbledon White back, scuff it, seal, and use the Canvas White to cover it up nicely. If you haven’t already done so, try Jeff’s Bronco Graveyard and RockAuto for any other small Nick nack OEM body or mechanical pieces; great resources! Keep up the great work!

    While Work is picking up try going to Cars and Coffee's and Local Car shows and just film the cars, talk to the owners, MAYBE get them to take you for a ride and talk about their cars, what condition it was in when they got, what they did to it and all that, I'd LOVE you to spotlight some Smog/Malaise Era Cars (73-85) because they have gotten popular and someone needs to spotlight them and show them these "Less Desirable" cars can be cool too, I'd watch that all day. Doing a tool price versus brand name series would be good too, maybe show people how to actually shop for tools and gear also.

    Very nice work. Watched all 5 parts, It's come a long way. These Bull and Brick Nose Fords are the HOT Build, atleast out here in the West/Southwest as Daily Drivers/Cruise-In/Cars and Coffee projects because they are the last of affordable Classic Trucks. I've never been a Ford guy but I'm seriously considering finding one for my next project. What future plans do you have for the truck? Just "IF it was mine I would go to a parts store and pick up a pint of the ready to spray Duplicolor Red paint and paint the roof and the wheels, I like the white wheels but I think it would look better with red wheels.

    I love your videos! Keep them coming! I bought an '86 F150 Flareside in the fall of 2020 with my son. Plans are for it to be his when he's ready to drive. When we bought it, we had to trailer it home because it wasn't drivable and barely ran. We've done a lot of work on it and it has become my daily driver. Has no a/c or power windows or locks but it's 4spd and has become my daily driver. These trucks are so durable and easy to work on, im surprised there aren't more on the road! We still have a lot of work to do but it's been fun and a great experience! Keep the videos coming!
