    looking forward to this one of the things I always love a DM doing is letting you earn things over time instead of rewarding you right away think like the Zenith from terraria what is more satisfying? A) You receive a Staff of the Magi at the very end of the campaign after fighting the BBEG, or after receiving it from a fallen archmage or as random loot in an ancient dungeon or something B) You receive part of an early game boss that doesnt do anything ... yet... and then a mid-game boss, then you get a treasure from a dungeon, and then you find a rare ingredient in the forest, and every time you find these pieces they react to each other (starting with the mid boss treasure reacting with the little token you got during the first boss fight). Then, as your wizard gets stronger they realize they can craft a staff of magi with the various rare items they found along the journey, and they can use it for the last few fights after making it themselves, representing a physical reminder of how far theyve come. Bonus if you actually let the first two components create a functional staff as an arcane focus, with maybe a +1. And then as they get more pieces, the staff evolves into a Staff of Absorption, and then a staff of power, and then etc.. For me, B wins every time Works for martials too, maybe you start the game by giving them a sword or an axe that seems like a normal weapon but it looks cooler than usual, and you can have them pass trials or achieve milestones that activate new abilities for it one by one, until it eventually is revealed to be a legendary sword Of course there will always be a rush in finding a legendary item ready and waiting for you, and I would not deprive players of this entirely if I was a DM, but I would probably like to mix the two approaches. Maybe the wizard gets to craft the staff of magi towards the end, and loot the robe of the archmage from the Lich guarding the tomb of the ancient dragon. Maybe the fighter starts off with their dad's armor, and it turns out to be really strong and they can use more of its power as they grow up, but they still get to find a +3 sword if I am going to throw something really stupidly strong at them like the aforementioned dragon

    The actions aren’t quite all the players go then the gm. The player goes until they roll with fear so there is a bit under a %50 chance every action they take the gm will go right after. It’s highly likely the GM will go regularly and if they need to go more they can spend fear tokens. I’m very interested to see how it plays out. Also the crit is 8.333% so a bit higher than most D20 games. You can also use armor as many times as you want. I’ve heard it plays a lot better than it reads and look forward to finding out when I GM if a few weeks. They also give a suggestion for prices of items (2 handfuls * tier) or (2 bags * tier) depending how you want hold to be worth. I like it a lot because gold isn’t even worth tracking in most of my games. The free flow allows me to be more flexible.

      Yeah it’s probably too much. Decided a to hit bonus, their HP, AC, and use the high/low idea for their mental/physical. If you want them to have cool abilities or something just give them 1 or 2. Then let them use it a few times a day. For example: Fighty McFighterson. +5 to hit with weapons. Has 16 AC and 50HP. +5 to physical stuff, -1 to mental stuff. 3 times a day he can use his reaction to parry an attack giving himself +5 to AC when hit (possibly causing the attack to miss) he can also use this when a creature within 5 ft of himself is hit by an attack and try to parry that attack, giving the creature +5 to its AC. Something like that!

    my issue with high magic is that it's trivialized, for some people the solution to their campaign is to have medium to high magic yet the stability, predictability, costs etc. Plus, high magic doesn't mean everything is possible, think full metal alchemist, ATLA, those have clear "costs" for magic from the very begining and everywhere and to the very top Think Katara getting burnt by Aang, Toph creating metal bending OUT OF NEED (as seen with Katara later on, more subtly, and with Bolin in the much worse sequel in a much worse way that makes it feel unearned, would have been better if he could do it ONCE and then needed to learn to use it properly like Aang did with the avatar state), the Elric brothers having to train their almost daily, their master training by surviving in the north, everyone losing something when discovering the truth, Mustang being able to kill Humunculi while also struggling to use his power at all if there's too much water around, humunculi becoming weaker as they get resurected again and againetc. I'm thinking of telling my players that they have spells up to two levels above their current spell level and giving them some costs like "you can try to cast fireball at a 1 lvl but if you fail the cast you lose the spell slot and you might even hurt yourself or the wrong person, so roll an additional d20+int/chr/wis to decide that if you're decided you're using it Plus, in my campaign there's custom spells and custom features so losing a spellslot ain't even that bad and I want to reward them later on if they take the risk appropriately, also, clerics don't exist, deities don't exist cause they ruin everything thematically and game wise and things like "cure disease" doesn't exist cause I don't get how they can make a spell that removes a tumor from my brain or scabies or ebola or just the common cold etc. those things exist for plot, they're treated like Skyrim diseases where you realise your bow ain't as good, you have 12 diseases and you need to quick travel to a temple of mara to heal up :P don't want short D mechanics in my DnD

    • @CriticalMits
      @CriticalMits 4 месяца назад

      Woah big post! 🤣 but yeah I can see why you want exclude healing magic etc. that’s an interesting campaign then. Seems like the party would quite quickly die of infected wounds considering how much combat there is in ttrpgs generally. Having extra costs to magic is a fantastic idea! I have a thing for when players create their own spells and they haven’t mastered how to cast them yet. It’s a percentage based on how many hours of downtime they’ve spent playing with the spell. Then they have “magical mishaps” basically, wild magic surge table, type things when they cast the spell. Sounds like you want a very serious game. Which is fine as long as your players agree 👍

      @@CriticalMits nah, I hate clerics cause (it's actually the cleric mains) they fill a role I don't want (god related stuff) when druids and others can fill the gap (combat wise) will I have layer actions that are carnivorous flocking monsters that need to be killed to remove the layer action? Yeah! Will my sorcerer's burning hands do wonders there? Yea! Will my druid and knight (paladin) spend the next 3 turns making sure my party is safe? Yea! And my players will love it, cause my paladin actually protects, my druid has more potent team oriented support, my bard has disruption focused magic and my casters each have a role that the wizard isn't better at than them :D Also, barbarians gain rage based on missing health (can't go lower than a guaranteed number based on this) and damage done (for extra pay off) and they do up to 6* more damage (rage at a max, defied death multiple times) if they play right and get lucky I think it's fun and balanced and hopefully worth building so much of this system hahaha

      @@CriticalMits Guidance. 24 AC at lvl 4. Advantage on rolls against magic targeting them. Rolled 6 whole points better than me "You got good stats, so you can play around but I rolled like $hit" he did, in fact, roll the 2nd best at the table of 6 after our barbarian

      @@antoniovlassa5886 AC is only an issue if you dont throw spells at them. Find monsters to challenge their weaknesses low dex/cha or whatever stat they have as a dump, pick monsters to challenge them! I never roll for stats. Always go point buy or array. plus guidance is strong BUT remember; its touch range, and it requires verbal components. Make them have to stealth so they cant talk loudly enough to cast it on EVERYTHING and also split them up forcibly from the rest of the party somehow to limit it's potency!

    Mastery is proficiency but there are two kinds. Combat mastery is just based on level. Skill/trade mastery is based on investment so you can choose what to be okay at and really good at. That's basically the whole mastery system. What Pathfinder actually does with skills (DC20 hasn't yet but I hope the mastery system signals they will) is use skill proficiently levels to gate special abilities (for example, getting to Master proficiency in society unlocks a feat to start doing the Sherlock thing where you observe someone and figure out where they're from and what they do, or getting to Master in athletics unlocks a feat to wall jump).

      I don’t know if I like the complexity of having to preplan so much of your character to get certain things. Systems on top of systems just seems overly complicated for me.

      @@CriticalMits that's fair, though (in Pathfinder 2e) skill feats are by no means must-haves. You just get a skill point every other level, and means every character can potentially grab a few expertise equivalents by level 20 (reaching legendary proficiency in a skill). I like that it means each character can be nearly unparalleled at certain things, rather than "you're proficient or not." Basic proficiently is still there, but you get rewarded for going beyond that and getting really good at your specialty. With that said, a lot of skill feats aren't the best designed. They do the job of making sure you can't spend all your character abilities on combat stuff, but some of the lower level ones especially feel like taxes to do basic things.

    Another flavour of magic to consider is pervasive magic, where magic itself is common, but people who can use it are rare (possibly even nonexistent).

      Yes! There are many other concepts with magic especially. Thank you!
