REMOTE Mountain BACKPACKING and FLY FISHING for Native Trout!
To me, the best kind of fly fishing is in naturally occurring streams and rivers of the Rocky Mountains. The best kind of camping is the farthest you can get away from civilization. The best sound to fall asleep to is a flowing river, and the best alarm is a songbird at dawn.
I got to experience all of that in this amazing adventure out into the wilderness. The beauty of the mountains always amazes me, and there's nothing quite like spending a day fly fishing for native trout.
Thanks for joining me on today's journey into the wild, and I truly hope you're as excited as I am for the next time we get to get out there!

FISHING SAN JUAN RIVER for MONSTER TROUT! Fly Fishing New Mexico's Blue Ribbon Trout River!
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.3 года назад
Some have called the San Juan River the 'greatest fly fishing river in the Southwest'. It is widely renowned as an incredible stream to catch enormous trout, and it did not disappoint today! We were dealing with water flow at 750 cfs, and some very temperamental trout today, but sometimes it's those added challenges that make a trip all the more fun! Thanks for tagging along, and for being a pa...

Fly Fishing DEEP INTO THE GORGE For Winter Trout! Winter Fly Fishing New Mexico's Rio Grande River!
Просмотров 7593 года назад
Journal Entry, 03/05/2021: Rocky canyon walls rise in anger on both sides, studded with fallen boulders and dotted with sparse trees. The river at their feet changes its' mood constantly, sometimes babbling, sometimes roaring, but always moving... A bluebird sky allows the warm rays of sun to kiss the slick, cold, granite boulders that hug the edges of the murmuring river. The occasional birdso...
REVENGE on THE RIO! Fly Fishing The Rio Grande River in Winter
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.3 года назад
In today's episode of Eli's Journal, we head North to the (very cold) Rio Grande gorge, where lies the Rio Grande River. Often quoted as New Mexico's most challenging river to fly fish, it is a tough trip on many different levels. I've been wanting to get back out on The Rio and do what I couldn't last time - catch something! Some of you remember that video.. it was a painful one. Today was a g...
Fly Fishing a TINY FROZEN CREEK in Mid-Winter! Fighting The Ice for Christmas Rainbows!
Просмотров 4074 года назад
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you guys are doing well, and I'm glad to be sharing today's excursion with you! This creek was barely fishable today, but I had a hunch there would be a way around the ice, and I was right! It's such a blast to take on the challenge of a freezing river in winter conditions and come up positive. A nice rebound after my last skunk video (if you know, you know ;). ...
WINTER Fly Fishing RIO GRANDE GORGE New Mexico! Skunked by NM's Wildest River!
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.4 года назад
What's up guys! It's been a minute since I've had some time to get out and make a video, but here we are! Here's a thought: When I started this channel, I decided to keep everything transparent, meaning that even though sometimes I may have days like this one, where fishing is slow, I still want to make that video. No fishermen is perfect, and I am definitely not always successful. I think it's...

CATCH N’ COOK Wild Rainbow Trout! Fly Fishing New Mexico's Chama River in November!
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.4 года назад
Today we take a trip to Northern New Mexico in pursuit of wild trout. The water is a little strange (almost a blue/green color) which made the fishing challenging.. However, we managed to overcome the challenge and come up successful. Thanks for tagging along once again! The support and excitement you guys have brought so far to these videos has been awesome, and I am truly grateful for it! Nex...
FROZEN RIVER Fly Fishing New Mexico! BIG Pecos Rainbow Trout!
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.4 года назад
Today, we take on the challenge of catching big rainbows in New Mexico's Pecos River while it's freezing over. Ice always makes fly fishing difficult, but we managed to make some magic happen! I show my setup for those interested in a good winter fly fishing setup. November is never an easy month to fly fish as the fish often become dormant in their switch from feeding on warm-weather hatches t...
WINTER DRY FLIES! New Mexico Fly Fishing: Holy Ghost Creek (Pecos)
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.4 года назад
This is my first experiment at videoing an excursion for my fellow outdoors fanatics! Keep in mind that this is just that - an experiment - and if this gets some love, I'll invest in some real gear and bring more high quality content to this channel. Have you ever watched the established RUclipsrs make their videos, and wonder what their videos looked like before they had a huge following and l...
Thanks for keeping it real. Falls, tangles, and no fish. It happens to the best of them. :)
Come back Eli , pretty good videos
I’ve never been here, but which is the best access to get down to the water?
Super cool adventure!
Is this in the Jemez?
Pretty country and a great video! We just subscribed. We have a similar channel if you want to check it out, "Hunt and Gather with the Chatters". Thanks!
Enjoyed the video. Were you close to Pilar? I knew a veteran fisherman that used to work at Charlies Sporting Goods. He said that you really have to work for a fish on the Rio. It's not like the San Juan. I don't know about the guy's comment on your cast. When you use a lot of weight, about all you can do is lob it out there. Appreciate your great zeal for the sport!
Thank you sir! Yes, this is just up from Pilar. I think it took a total of 5 trips for me to catch my first trout on the Rio.. but so rewarding when it happens! Thanks for the comment.
Good job
Thanks!
Great videos, really enjoy them!!
Thanks, John!
@@elisjournal4435 question, what length fly rod do you use and type of firearm? Just curious due to the wildlife in the mountains such as bears and mountain lions? I’ve always enjoyed trout fishing New Mexico!!
Good to see you back Eli - FISH-ON my friend!
Thanks Dan - Fish On and Tight Lines!
it's cool to have someone from New Mexico do a backpack hiking video.
Thank you, Pat! Those utensils you got me worked perfectly!
You’re back!
I’m back!
Welcome back, man! In my opinion this is by far your best video yet, especially cinematically. It’s a bummer to miss out on a campfire, but that whole tent-hug remedy looked super cool! Tight lines, buddy!:)
Thanks, brother! It means a lot to hear you say that :) excited for us to get out there together man! Tight lines!
:)
Welcome back Eli
Thanks Ed!
Fishy fishy fish time
That’s right
Great video
Thanks!
Is dry flies like having a dry spell with the chicks ?
I love fishing the Juan!!!
Nice work Eli... the Gilman tunnels are awesome. The blue nymph is called a Perdigon (I believe). Northern NM is great place to fish. Perhaps we will see each other out there... Fish On!
Thank you!!!
Are you fishing the Guadalupe by Gillman
You da man bro
Thank you!
I enjoy the candidness of your videos. I fished Northern New Mexico years ago while stationed at Kirtland AFB and White Sands Missile Range...and I fished most of the areas you film. A few words of advice that might help you get more hook-ups. First, I often see coils in your leader and tippet. Try to smooth those out better with the friction of your fingers (before the leader / tippet gets wet). Less coil means easier hook sets. Second, for small stream fishing, avoid using the larger bobber-sized strike indicators. They splash when they hit the water and spook fish. Try 'Palsa Pinch-ons' ...they are lighter and better allow you to see gentle takes... especially on smaller / clearer water. Save the larger indicators for faster, deeper water when nymphing with split shot or heavier beadhead nymphs. Tight lines and keep exploring!
Thanks Gary! I really appreciate it - kindness and recommendations go a long way. Stoked to get back out there. Tight lines!
You should JUST FISH AND LESS TALK GREAT VIDEO
Noted - thanks Joseph!
Less TALKING
6 weeks, huh.... How bout 4 months, mate! :)
I know man!! I want to get out there with the camera again!
When they feel really big and the turn out not to be = Foul Hooked. It happens.
Haha you know it!!
The stack of people,is such a god damn turn off. Looks like Alaska during the salmon run
Tell me about it.. it’s why I spend most of my time on remote mountain rivers.
It looks refreshing man. Nice. 👌👌
Thanks ninja! It was awesome!
Nice work Eli. Keep up the great work mate 👌
Thank you!!
You're using way too big of flies -- in the winter you should be using size 20-24 if not even smaller in some rivers. Also give yourself more room between your split shot and your attractor fly, no way will a fish take that top fly with the shot so close.
Thanks for the tip, Logan! I’ll try that out next time!
Nah bro I fish the rio all the time use the big flies and try more eggs/ mops now in the winter
Caught my pb in that first hole.
Awesome man!
A tip for the tippet rings, I am not sure if you know about it though. But, if you clamp the tippet ring in your hemostats and it is easier because you hold on to the ring.
Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated!
No problem
With the tippett ring you can also tie it to the leader before you take off the snap holder
cool video brother! backpacking is always a blast!
Thanks bro!! Always a joy!
I was Euro Nymphing there a few weeks ago. My favorite stream in Jemez.
Yes sir - a small, not well-known stream with great fishing! A true gem in the mountains.
Very cool, its good to see that someone else catches stick fish also besides me. Beautiful drone footage as well. Good job Eli.
Thank you! The stick fish has cursed us all at some point or another!
If you ever come to Pecos again we should go together I know a lot of spots to go too I also fish with fly
Right on man! We should make it happen!
Love your videos. Reminds me of when I was a young guy like you out being adventurous in nature! Looks like a lot of your videos are shot in the Jemez, some on the Rio. Have you done any in the Pecos Canyon area? Where was this one done? You don't have to give specifics, just wondering if it was in the Jemez, or elsewhere? Thanks and keep 'em coming!
Thank you Joseph! That’s so cool to hear. Love that you can relate. So this one was in the San Pedro Parks Wilderness area, up by the Rio De Las Vacas river. I have done quite a few near the Jemez, and of course, The Rio. I plan to hit a ton of smaller, less-known spots in the Southwest, especially in NM over the warm season, as the rivers are dropping and fishing is getting better! I have only done one or two in pecos canyon. It’s a nice spot, although often heavily pressured so I opt to go other places when I can. Thanks for the support mate. Love connecting with other NM anglers on here!
What a great time (well except for cooking a sock) 😂 Thanks for letting us tag along 👍
A great time indeed! Haha yes the sock cookout was a little strange!
Man what a great video! Keep up the hard work
Thanks mate!
This is great. Would love to do more camp and fish. Might have to invest in a drone for our channel!
Worth it mate.
Very cool love the drone shots.
Thanks Ed!
This video is 🔥 amazing! Beautiful fish 🐟 I will just live vicariously through you! You should apply for the show survivor. Thanks for sharing your adventure- it looks like an awesome trip! 🎣🏕⛰
Thanks Shelley! Always such an encouragement to see other people enjoying these!
Talk about deadfall, that's intense. Definitely worth it to get on those beautiful fish!
Most I’ve ever seen! It was insanity.. but a beautiful area in the end!
Bigger fish always wins ;)). Great video Eli and what a great backpacking trip! Awesome, keep up the great work! Drone footage was well done too btw...not sure how you missed those branches up river!
Haha, if FlyFishDan says bigger fish wins... then that’s the official ruling! Thanks Dan!
Awesome trip !! Jemez springs is the best bro keep it up with the challenges
Awesome video bro Nice drone shots of the backwoods Lmao no big foot 🦶 Stay bless
Thanks Joe! Haha grateful for no big foot on this trip!
Dang Would been really trippy if that happen haha
2:52 Casually hides behind tree...Don't think that one will escape me, man! Jokes aside, great work! Especially with the music choices.
Thanks bro! Ssshhh you saw nothing haha!
This video makes me happy! I caught a stick this week as well 😆 beautiful video as always! 🏔🎣
Haha we have all been there!
Dude! Great video man. Keep it up! You're killin the game ⛺ 🎣 🔥
Thanks mate! Appreciate the support!
A few years ago, right about when I was your age, I would visit this creek often with my 2 weight. This is a great place to practice casting and to learn small creek tactics. It prepared me for some much more glamorous trips in future summers! It's awesome to see someone else learning as well!
That’s awesome! Thanks for the support!
Yeah, with a little stream like that I would use a 2 -3 wt. Rod! I just got back from Idaho Springs, CO and killed it with browns nymphing.
That’s some awesome drone footage! Don’t give up on the Euro Nymphing, it’s such a fun and efficient way to fish!
Thanks! I’ll have to get back at it soon
