This is one of the terrible games that i think is worthy of a remake so they can actually get the concept right, because i like their take on a nazi invasion of america better than wolfensteins, probably coz the art design is more grounded than that of wolfensteins

It was advance for its time but virtually unplayable unless you cheat-saved. By default you could only save once per mission, which was insane given the accuracy of the AI. But still some of the mission ideas are extremely clever, they would work great in a modern ARMA game.

What’s the best way to play this from a Macbook Pro?

This was a good game, the graphics were just good enough that playing it isn't painful to look at even today. Rescuing your family isn't just for the satisfaction of doing it. Your family members are valuable in the score, and they always give you clues to lost cities or Montalban's hideout, which are also very valuable. The game is completely open world so you don't ever have to do these things, but as time passes, piracy becomes less profitable compared to currying favor with governors and hunting for ancient treasure. Maybe this is how it should be, you are getting older after all, but it kind of stops being Pirates! and becomes Treasure Hunters! Biggest complaint about the game is you can't really lose. No matter how badly you are defeated, you never lose anything but time and equipment. Sometimes this is enough of a setback that retirement is the best option, but you can't die, or otherwise get a hard game over.

I wish open world games moved more in the direction of this games campaign. Build you up with tutorial missions to show you your tools. Then soon enough the whole island is the mission/enemy. With so many interesting locations to play in

I like the aspect of bullets carrying a lot of weight. I find in a lot of FPSs with automatic weapons, it's difficult to conserve ammo as the length of a necessary take-down burst is hard to discern.

The only thing I find wierd about this game is that the soldiers are using m81 woodland (not erdl as you can see by it haveing tan spots) but they still wear the Vietnam era webbing and not Alice gear.

5:34 As long as you have over 1000 Gold per crew member, you can sail forever, I'm at over 420k right now in my playthough and have just under 420 crew with a Fleet of 4 ships, I main a Brig of War, my fleet ships are a Flag Galleon, a Treasure Galleon and a East Indianman.

Game looks so weird on PC conpared to console, I play yhe Original Xbox version on my XBOX SERIES X, it has 16:9, is rendering on 4K (the UI is still lower rez), there is a transparent map you can toggle on while sailing which shows all main towns but not the Pirate Towns or Priest places whatever they are called. Sneeking into town is 3rd person and so many more different and arguably better versions of features. Only thing you miss out on is over the top land searching, it's automatic on console, as long as you are in tje right area, you'll automatically find the lpat ciry or family member etc

This would have been perfect if it wasent this realistic! maybe if it had been lie game dev tycoon but just instead of games its computers and hardware. but thats just me.

I don't know if you are aware or not but there is a button that lets you use the iron sights. I saw that you seem to use only the crosshairs - and many people do play like that. The controls settings menu is a bit unintuitive in my opinion. Not sure what the default is. Maybe 'v'?

17:48 on Windows XP you could use full view distance no idea whats wrong with this when you use Windows 10 or higher. I have the orginal games at my Parents place. I have to try myself why it does that.

The MAINSTORY between serious and lightheaarted scenes. That is typical for the French World War II movies done between the Fifties and Seventies. The developer team had used those as a role model for their game, even though some other classical War Movies like THE BONS OF NEVARONE also had been used as examples THE TREASURRE CHEST. Good Explanation - could had become DLC material. As a Star Trek Fan I also could had imagined a STAR TREK VOYAGER DLC were the crew fights the Hirogans. :) THE BURLESQUE SCENES. I am not so critical to this like you. After all by modern standards that even is not anymore pornography. In the shopping window of every pharmacy you see more such halfnude women like this by now doing advertisement for skin creams My dear man you are a bit of a prude! But certainly with those scenes in I also would not give the game to some very young teenager.

Great review for a great game! I remember playing the patrol mission and the AI was driving the jeep and it went too fast over a bump and flipped the car and we all died lol XD. But im surprised you didnt mention the outstanding soundtrack of this game.

This game was absolutely mind blowing when it came out in 2001, god knows how many hours I spent just playing the demo. There was nothing else like OFP at the time, probably the next closest thing was Battlefield 1942 later in 2002 which to me was like an arcade MP version of OFP. The games lighting system and draw distance were mind boggling, and it was the first 3D simulation that managed to capture the feeling of actual warfare. No idea how many hours I spent crawling on the ground away from the russians because my legs were blown up and all my friendlies were dead XD

This is a re-release of the original, BEST, military simulation, Operation Flashpoint : Cold War Crisis. Unfortunately, it contains only one of the 2 expansions but they can be found here and there. Now, the newer ARMA games, are a weak effort to catch the spirit of the original game. Short , uninteresting single player campaigns, their main focus is multiplayer, which sucks cause it's too disorganised. Besides, you know how it goes, players sign in to play mp, only so they can "....kill something..." No effort to work as a team, considering that most of these kids haven't done time in the military. One comment read " I prefer Call of Duty". LOL. This game is incredibly realistic, you fight on foot, drive and pilot tanks, A10 Thunderbolt, helicopters, civilian cars, trucks, jeeps and even farm tractors. Many different views, 1st person, 3rd person, scope view, iron sights, You can go from 3rd person to iron sights view directly. The vehicles are having their own targeting systems and even a battlefield view when you command multiple units, be it infantry or a tank platoon. Call of Duty, my ass, it's got nothing on OFP, just a walking gun that shoots at everything that moves. Operation Flashopoint Cold War Crisis or ARMA Cold War Assault, as it's 2012 re-release is called, requires thinking and strategy. It's tough and it will test your patience but it's one of a kind. None other simulation comes close to it on realism.
