      Currently not possible with xpu and the shader directly. You can if you use the old mantra shader and render cpu, or you have to do some hacking meshing and make a thin shiny layer that you comp on top.

      barely any, it's a while ago now so don't remember exact numbers, but everything is made up of 2-3 tree instances, scattered a million times, so it's super effecient.

      No blazing fast. all the snow is rendered as volumes, and karma eats volumes for breakfast. very good experience.

      I think the ant model was from sketchfab, it had a walk animation that I altered and tweaked a little but most of the work there was setting up the rig with crowds.

    Looks amazing! Tried doing a similar thing recently with branches but the round shape of the branch seemed to confuse the crowd agent spawning/animation. I guess the standard setup is meant for more flat planes. How did you approach them moving along the branch?

    Just out of curiosity how long did each frame take to render and what hardware are you using if you don't mind me asking? I'm working on something similar in a different DCC. But I'd rather be doing it in Houdini.

      I will have to look up the exact times but from memory it was around 4-5mins / frame on my 7950x - 4090 - 3090ti

    Thanks for the tutorial! I'm having the same '@wedge' attribute problem as others and I am running my wedge node and selecting a work item but still nothing...don't know what I am doing wrong. If anyone has a link to that Facebook conversation about this that would be great. also side note...houdini isnt recognizing my null node reference either or my 'points' function.

      Yes, there is a lot of small pitfalls where people are so sure and assume they are doing it right, but because TOPs in involved, not everything works like you are used to. just one of those quirks, but great its working now!

    Hello Thomas! Love it!) Im struggling to set up the shader, i know WW standard works in CPU, but i saw your video in the Houdini Karma XPU release. What was your process?

      I am straight up using the karmaXPU volume shader, nothing fancy, just a lot of density values and tweaking colors and lighting. You don't get reflections the materialX volume shader does not support that, but otherwise, it's just a normal volume shader loading the density. put to something crazy high

      This was mostly rendered with karmaXPU, I think 3 of the 31 was done with Octane

    How are triggering the animations? Like you i plan to render mine, so i will be wanting to play them in a sequence i have setup, but i really dont want to drag and drop 100+ animation clips into my timeline :(

    It's wonderful! I am also using octane for houdini and when I place about 50,000 instances, they are all visible in the viewport, but only about 10,000 are visible when rendered. Do you know the cause? I use copy to points node and check "pack and instance" and also check "packed geo instancing".

      What do you mean by size? Voxel size? Size on disk? It’s a quite small and not super high res sim. It’s not directly low res but by no standards high res

      Oh, well there its tiny, this is a really small scale sim in reality so I think the files were around 17mb / frame

      I'm not sure I understand what you mean by everything? it's important to remember that with tops, you won't see anything unless you have a work item selected, if this is why you are seeing different to what you are expecting?

    Thanks for the tutorial. Just wanted to know how to export multiple primitives to give each of them a material in Unreal, for example a soldier with a spear, shield and hood to have a seperate material in unreal. Much appreciated.

      I don't have a test file at hand, but since the characters are unpacked as fbx when exported, if you have a sword or a shield or anything as a separate object in houdini, when added as an agent layer, it will come through as part of the agent like anything else. should just be an object like the agent character itself.
