    Retired now but ive done many of these over the years and you made all the right choices..sure it would be nice if you can cut the wipe off and go onto the Brass of the ferrule but there needs to be a good 1" or more so the fernco will bite properly and using a med 90 even though you had to cut the shoulder down is still far better than a vent 90 or even those goofy ABS 4x3 closet bends..they just cause too many clogs. And digging out a 4" brass caulking ferrule with that much space available is just not realistic and if you end up with a hair line crack in that bell you will never try it again.

    Hey there David, I assume you always have to use some form of ratchet to remove the diverter assembly? Attempting my first change on this product. And that diverter stem is very tough to pull out. Had to stop using my plyers or I’d completely destroy the ends of it

      Hey thanks for commenting. For this job in particular I indeed used a socket and ratchet. We first sent images to a company in Ontario (Niagra Faucets) . They then sent the parts to us and I took them to the supply shop and they matched the exact socket that I needed. I don't remember exactly what size socket I used unfortunately. Hope this helps !

    Take the extra time to do things correctly. Next time, pull the old lead from the hub, clean the hub, and install a service weight gasket. Then commence with PVC or ABS material. Ferncos are prohibited above ground and should not have been installed.

    What a mess you had to deal with! However, you stopped the leaks. My sister and I are facing a similar situation in the house in which we grew up. We are cleaning the house out and getting it ready to sell. The second bathroom was built in 1967 in a spot where it should never have been put. It was poorly constructed with pipes on the outside wall behind the tub and toilet, and pipes in the wall next to the garage. A couple of years ago, the pipes froze while my niece was staying there. I had her shut the water off and open the drain valves in the basement. Back in the fall, I tried to turn the water back on so I could clean up the bathroom. I could hear water rushing in the wall while nothing was running from the faucets or in the toilet tank. When I went into the basement, I could see water pouring out of the hole that the contractors made to run the water and drain pipes to the bathroom. So, this is going to mean either tearing out the walls in the bathroom or accessing them from outside. So, we are going to have to find a plumber who is willing to take on which I expect will be a nasty job.

    • @davedoesplumbing
      @davedoesplumbing 11 месяцев назад

      Im relieved to be still in one piece ! Late jobs are becoming more and more frequent as of late. Wow an incredible series of events right there. Especially approaching selling time. I worked in a cleanroom for many years. A couple of years before I retired, some disgruntled employee was flushing wads of vinyl gloves down the toilets to intentionally plug them. I don't know if the person was caught, but management had an electronic lock put on the door to the change room just outside the restrooms. Everybody had to use their badge to unlock the door so that names and times of use were logged. The person who plugged that toilet with food had no consideration for his or her coworkers, and is downright lazy.
