    I'm so glad I had my camera with me last June when I was there or this footage would not have been possible. I haven't been back to the park since Avalon reopened. I'm planning to go back later in the fall for a little leaf-peeping. :)

    Love, love, love the ferry :) There is another ferry to CT on the east end at Orient Point. I love them both. As a Long Islander I can say it is a much easier way to get to off island (as opposed to driving through "the city.")

    This is such a great place to visit and since it's a state park, it only costs about $10 to park here (or free if you have the NYS Empire Pass.) Speaking of the Empire Pass, I highly recommend it. For about $100 you get unlimited free access to all of the parks in NYS for a year. It's completely worth it.

    One suggestion I have is if you come here and don't plan on eating at the high end restos here, what I tend to do is drive down to Ft. Salonga Rd. 25A, east a bit, and you have a choice of at least three good delis, bagel shops (one of them west a bit), a taco fajita joint, which is newer, and all kinds of other food, including Stop and Shop. It's only 5 min. drive from the village here.

    I was here a good deal this past summer. I love the town, but the food here is generally quite expensive. The diner isn't too bad. Beautiful place to hang out and walk around, though. The park and marina are fantastic. Free parking if you get here before around 10 am. or so.

      It is really beautiful. They have free concerts in the park (gazebo is the stage) during the summer (Thursdays, I think.) I didn't get there this summer but it's very pleasant. The restaurants are on the pricey side but it's easy to grab some takeout on the way to town and enjoy it waterside in the park.

      @thiscorrosion900 21 день назад

      @@walkingwithGenny Yeah, probably better off packing a picnic, or takeout for events there. The diner there is reasonable, but only open till 3 p.m., and also, the deli there closed for good. That ice cream joint I hear is great, though.

    It was just destroyed in a storm last week. 11 inches of rain caused the dam and bridge to collapse, taking out a house, an adjacent road, and burying the newly restored water wheel under tons of sand and mud.

    • @walkingwithGenny
      @walkingwithGenny 24 дня назад

      I didn't know the water wheel was buried. It was a crazy thing to see. It's such a pretty place and I was there earlier this summer to get some footage. When I went back after the storm (to get additional footage) I could not believe what had happened. It's something that I guess a lot of us took for granted - that it would always be there... It's an absolute miracle that no one was killed.

    This place is so close to my heart. When my grandmother would ask me if I wanted to go feed the ducks, I knew we were headed to Mill Pond (even though when I was five, I didn't know the name of the pond or even that it was a "pond.' As far as I knew this was "Stony Brook" and I loved it. I am so grateful that I had a chance to get here at the start of the summer.

    I’ve lived on Long Island for 22 years (born and raised but I just moved to North Carolina last year) and I’ve never been to Northport. The only towns that I’ve been to on the North Shore are Riverhead for the aquarium back in late 2016 for a school field trip, and Huntington for this now closed down clothing boutique’s pop-up shop that I went to in 2021. I do plan on moving back in like 2-3 years, and possibly moving to one of these towns because when I lived on Long Island…..I lived in Baldwin, and spent most of my life on the south shore never really exploring much of the island. So when I do go back, I’m definitely gonna make it my business to explore as much of Long Island as possible.

    • @walkingwithGenny
      @walkingwithGenny Месяц назад

      I'll be hitting a lot of the north shore towns on this channel :) (south shore too!!) What I am most excited about is that I'll be exploring some towns I've never been to either. I think what most of us Long Islanders do is live in our towns, do our thing, and don't really explore much the rest of the island. There is so much to see though, and I hope to bring as much of it as I can to the channel. Thank you for watching. Also, you might want to check out @discoveringlongisland9151 - they go all over Long Island, and they are hilarious.

      I grew up in Levittown LI originally, through 1988 or so, then was up in Oyster Bay for a few years in college era. I never went up to the north shore much in the 80s, or 70s, though one time around 1979 or so my mom and a friend of hers and her daughter the gang of us drove up to Northport for a day or so, walked around, and they were having some kind of festival (maybe July 4th week) with guys dressed as Minutemen in Rev. garb and with fake muskets, etc. We had pics of this somewhere, with me in my stupid hippie suede hat (!) and Grateful Dead black t shirt on which I was into at the time for a while. Ah, youth. Huntington I got to know very well by the later 80s and I was going there all the time when I got a car, with my GF to record shop, and eat etc., and also for the bookstores there. My dad had a sailboat for a few years in Huntington so that was another reason to go up there. It's not really the LI I grew up in though, these days. Northport hasn't changed much, it's just as gorgeous as ever, the only thing is how expensive it is to eat there and such. It's similar to Sag Harbor in that regard. The summer is heavily aimed at the tourists and boaters. I wish Northport Main St. had a real bookstore/record store and more like used antique stores etc. that are semi-affordable. As it is now, the general store wants $55 for a t shirt, which is absurd. The admission at the Riverhead aquarium was so high, I ended up skipping it! LOL The only downside to LI is if you don''t have a car, you're in bad shape. I do, of course, since it's a necessity, but I lived in NYC for 14 years and never needed one there.

    This is the first non-short video I uploaded to RUclips. It was originally shot in 4K but I was using an editing program that limited file size. Sadly I had to compress it multiple times just to edit it. I have better editing equipment now and I am thinking about re-uploading this video in 4K. I'm torn though because it was my first upload and while I'd love to see it 4K I'm sort of nostalgic about leaving it as is. Does anyone know if you can have 2 versions of the same video on a channel???
