Old English and lyre with Russell
Великобритания
Добавлен 10 авг 2016
Spoken Old English recorded at the locations in England that it speaks about.
And recordings of me playing vaguely Anglo-Saxon lyres.
And anything else I feel like.

I'm having nothing to do with idiotic right wing ideas, white supremacy or anything else hateful. I just liked the tune and that is the name it came with.

Well done!
Phabulous Phyllis! 💜
good stuff, shame the nazis stole so many symbols
Nice man, your videos are an inspiration and didn't think you were a white supremacist at all. Never heard of the "Black Sun" hate symbol and I don't make it a habit to look all the hate symbols people use. Keep up the nice job.
@@meisterfrown7239 it is a constant problem if you are interested in Germanic Lyre or Old English or Runes or Germanic Paganism or Anglo-Saxon History or re-enactment or practical archeology. There are always right wing idiots around. Most of us are excellent people but these subjects always attract a few hateful people. I will never give in to them. If I can do anything to disappoint them I will.
do you realize that "black sun" is a Nazi / white supremacist symbol? Rather an unfortunate choice of song name
Actually I did realise that, which is why last time I uploaded this tune I made sure to include my utter rejection of right wing ideas. I didn't write the tune or name it. But you are right. I've renamed it to make things clearer. No pasaran, nunca.
@@oldenglishandlyre thank you so much for the clarification. Re-followed.
Really cool stuff man
Awesome 👏👏👏
I like it my friend, great work
I like it my friend, great work
That is great my friend
Love the way the melody seems to be speaking the word 'Litungu'
way to mount the drum on the lyre!
@@OtaakBand anachronistic bungee cord ! But it's solid.
I like this version of Bear Dance too! Nice job, I bet everyone had a good time together
Very cool, you play both those instruments well at the same time. Looked like a fun gathering
Would like to experience this sort of evening ❤
Where do you live, perhaps you can organise one.
@@oldenglishandlyre I'm from France but I live in Germany since approximately 3 years. I discovered last year an historical association. I think they do it once a year. I will try to know more. Greetings and keep the good work !
Your way of playing is very intriguing. Holding and playing the lyre with just one hand 😮. A lot of practice I can imagine.
My left and right hands have developed different styles of playing. I try to make sure I can play all my tunes , left hand, right hand , block and strum, on my Double Lyre with chords and like this with pipe ans lyre.
One handed playing is very useful because you can drink tea at the same time.
@@oldenglishandlyre 🤣🤣🤣
I am not sure what you mean by "round lyre". Is it a seven string instrument?
I don't call it an "Anglo-Saxon Lyre" as it has seven strings, and we haven't yet found a 7 stringer from the AS period. Also the term is getting abused by people selling crap many-stringed lyre mass produced in China. Any fantasy lyre-like instrument gets called Viking or Anglo-Saxon these days. So, I stick to a more generic " round lyre" although my base isn't all that round.
@@oldenglishandlyre I understand. I agree that good lyres are not mass produced as of now, unlike, for example, guitars. I feel fortunate to have a hand made 6 string instrument. Even though it is more limited than a 7 string, it is at least well made. I call it "germanic" or "saxon" or "northern European" to distinguish it from the Mediterranean lyres. But I suppose the only reason we call them "northern" or "saxon" or "germanic" is that is where the archeological finds are located. Lyres were obviously widespread in Eurasia, and the "round" design could have been all over.. I have never cared for the outdated term "anglo-saxon" and I certainly would not call it "viking". Thank you for your explanation. I think I will start calling it a round lyre by your example, even though mine is much closer to a rectangle than an oval.
That is great my friend
Nice job, sounds cool! Never seen anyone play lyre and pipe at the same time and now you added a drum. Are you going to add a 4th instrument??
Now you need to do the Bardcore version of "I'm a one man band"
You know what they say ! " If I stick a brrom up my arse I can sweep the floor at the same time"
Keep it up 🥳🥳🥳
I have taken to privately using Fæder Ūre, either spoken or sung to psalm tone 2, in place of the contemporary English version I use in communal worship. But before the "āmen", I also add "For þīn biþ sēo rīce, and se þrymm, and þæt wuldor, nū and ā on ēcnesse", as this follows the version we use in the Episcopal Church which adds "for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, now and forever". It was nice to finally speak it along with someone else while watching this video, as I had never the chance before. Blessings from Ohio, USA.
Great ! I like the extra translation. I don't know psalm tone 2. Can you show me ? I'd love to hear it sung.
Great video! Brilliant reading of Old English. Thanks for posting it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love Old English. As a bilingual speaker of both English and Afrikaans, it is fascinating to see just how similar the two languages once were.
I feel like that when I study Dutch, clearly closely related
excellent groove
Thank you John
That's awesome, I never seen that instrument before
Thank you
Aren’t you worried about marking the lyre?
Not really, it does show on the lyre but it doesn't stop it working in any way.
not gonna lie, that was pretty impressive. must take a lot of coordination
Thank you. It needs more practice but I'm getting it
You seem to come up with endless new ideas for ways to play the lyre.
It's my obsession. Playing with the toes next, like a Viking in a snake pit!
I don't know how I can appreciate the effort. Actually I've identified two melodies from my community. Keep it up.
Thank you fir your kind comment. I love learning these tunes
Lovely
Thanks
It has such a clean sound, I love it
Thank you
Indeed you have done perfect, I have heart the three songs you have played well Link 👏👏👏
I have a great teacher.
It is such a different and interesting way to play the lyre, I appreciate your interest and your willingness to show us your practicing!
It one of my favourite Lyre traditions, I'm fascinated by Krar and Sangvultap traditions too, But there's not enough time in life to learn everything.
Absolutely fabulous ❤
thanks
That's great my friend
thank you it was fun

Excellent work Russell! I love how far you have come with this technique.
Thank you. Now must build a Tambour a Cordes too.
@@oldenglishandlyre If you could play pipe, lyre, and tambour all at the same time, you would very much be a one man band.
@@z.l.burington1183 the thought had crossed my mind. The neatest I get is ankle-bells a percussion
would you share the sheet music?

That is an interesting way to play the lyre, to hold it like that.
Yes, I am learning at the minute, very different to my Anglo Saxon technique
Very beautiful ! 🤠I love it ! 💓
Thank you!
Nice. What make of whistle is this? They sound like Susatos but don’t look like Susatos 😊
They are Lark brand, the cheapest in C that I could find. I covered two holes on one pipe with insulting tape in the colours of Peru 🇵🇪 !
@@oldenglishandlyre They have a nice tone. I wondered about the tape. Thanks for the reply. Appreciated 😊
@@fatheroblivion45 they are not ideal as Dulzainas really. You have to be so precise with air volume to get the right octave. It's often a struggle. As Dulzainas I might be playing the same fingerings but wanting left pipe above right, or left pipe below right, so it's very unforgiving in air pressure. I want two decent pinkullos instead really.
This has me doin a little jiggy dance
video please !
Fantastic coordination!
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful!
