Squier used to have a standard strat. Poplar body, two point trem, 22 medium jumbo frets made in Indonesia $399. Classic Fender. Pay more, get less. I would buy the Squier but I wouldn't touch this "Fender" with a ten foot pole. Wouldn't even want it for free. The Squier was a good deal, this new standard is a rip off.

Having just looked at the Telecaster Standard I noticed they are still using plastic nuts, it is listed as Micarta, this is a plastic composite, why? bone nuts must cost them pennies! The price is £509 including shipping from Germany to the UK. Despite being a Fender Telecaster/Stratocaaster user for 40+ years I would still buy a third party import, I would have to upgrade the budget hardware these standards come with. I recently bought a neck through Telecater from AIO, $539 and $100 shipping to the UK, a bespoke set-up included. It is a great Telecaster! it sounds awesome and the specs put most Fender models to shame. I think the reason Fender decided to create this new Standard series is because although the Player series evolved out of the long running previous Mexican Standard line they got more expensive....a Player starts now at $800. The previous Standard series was $550 and was an affordable entry into the Fender brand. The current Squier Classic Vibe is an excellent bang for the buck guitar at $429 but some people don't realize it's quality and are prejudiced against the Squier name and won't buy it. So this new Indonesian Standard line brings back a more affordable Fender like the previous Mexican Standard was and Fender can cover that part of the market. Also I'm sure the successful PRS Silver Sky SE Indonesian version is taking away sales from the same priced Fender Player but now with these new Indonesian Fender Standards they can take sales away from PRS by offering a comparable quality guitar at $200 cheaper....pretty smart tactic by Fender.

That Squire Affinity HS or SH is currently $299.

Funny...I did a video about Fender hurting for business after the Squier Debut came out, and in one of my other videos, I said something about Fender and Gibson making Fender and Gibson branded guitars that are cheaper. Gibson is apparently the hold out. This shows that Fender is forward thinking. Gibson will be coming to the party late.

These Indonesian Standards seem to be basically a rebrand of the Squier Classic Vibes, perhaps even lower quality. I have an Indonesian Squier Classic Vibe Jazzmaster that's a great guitar in its own right. Got it for $200 when Proaudiostar was blowing them out on Ebay a few years ago. Proaudiostar hardly has Squier Affinitys for that price now. I look for Fender eventually to discontinue the Squier Classic Vibe line. They have been known to do so on lines where the quality is too good and competes with their other higher priced lines; the made in Japan Squiers and Korean Pro Tones being good examples. I picked up a Squier Sonic line guitar at Guitar Center recently. It felt very lightweight and cheap, and the fret ends were ragged. I think it was Indonesian (maybe China), but I wouldn't want to own one. Phil McKnight says he is generally impressed with the quality of most Indonesian guitars these days.

As soon as you said poplar wood, I rolled my eyes. Maybe wood doesn’t affect tonality, but the effort to “save” money for what once was a more premium product is laughable. Might as well get those cheap amazon guitar and modify those. By the way, thanks for the news Joe. Sad what fender is doing.

Hey Joe. A couple of cents worth of gold leaf on the headstock decal would have made it pop out at you, but that couple of cents would have put it over 600 bucks. To many choices out there!

Perhaps unexpectedly, Mexico is hit with a 25% tariff and China only gets another 10%, so we can just continue buying all these cheap Chinese guitars and don't have to worry about "Fender" anymore.

Micarta is a trade name for a type of phenolic material. It's made by layering paper, linen, canvas, or other fabrics with resin, then applying heat and pressure. So yeah it’s plastic, but not exactly just plastic. It’s easy and cheap to put a TUSQ nut on, so I don’t fret (get it) over the nut material on a budget instrument. Electronics and tuners can cost a fair amount to upgrade. I agree with you: Get a player one from Adorama.

The only way I would consider the Fender Standard is if it were Stupid Deal of the Day or from one of the other stores at near 50% off. I'm not sure but thought they had a Fende Standard years ago, thought I saw a used one once, but don't know what the specs were.

I will not be buying a Fender by Squier.

Thanks Joe for the breakdown on these. The comments on these newer indo fenders are saying its just squier with a cheap fender logo on the headstock for $300 more. It seemed like they really cheaped out on guitar, and is only selling the headstock logo for $300+. I was expecting if they moved the fender lineup to Indonesia then it would be similar specs but at a lower cost. You can still find the squier standard series all over the used market, and still have decent specs. I really want to see what these go for in year. The thing is, is this a real fender stratocaster? Or just a squier with a fender logo on the headstock.

Wow, this is a bean counter special if I ever saw one! So basically Fender reached into their import parts bins, mixed up some components between the Classic Vibe and the Affinity, slapped a Fender sticker on it, and put a large price tag on an Indonesian made guitar! I agree with you Joe... Skip this standard crap, and either buy an Affinity or a Player Series and be done with it. Don't get me wrong, I like Indonesian made guitars. I just think that a person is not going to get their money's worth from this standard series. Also, in my experience, the Affinity is worth the extra cost over the Sonic series. I have had both, and the Affinity series just seems a little better made, especially with regard to the paint! Take care Joe!

It sounds like this Fender standard is a Squier Sonic with a thicker body. Me personally would like to see some form of a deluxe sonic with fully upgraded pickups , frets, tuning machines etc. Reason for this is like the weight and size of the Sonic. Does anything like that exist?

I bought a G5420T from a friend years ago for $400. This thing is amazing. The pickups are a bit weak and the trem is virtually unusable if you like your guitar to be in tune. But the neck rivals any other guitar I've ever played at any price.

Gretsch Streamliner are fantastic only thing I change are the cheap pots. The hardbody electromatic guitars are iffy when it comes to fit and finish but the rest are amazing. Gretsch make my favorite guitars although it seems they are shifting from U necks to C on some guitars which is disappointing.

I would say that list is mostly ridiculous. Those brands probably advertise on their page or something. However, most of the cheap Amazon guitars have necks that are too large for me ( so I bought a Ibanez $300 RG421 24 fret, which is awesome). For single coil, I'm forced to get a classic vibe '60s, which is overpriced, but the neck is great. But if you don't mind the larger necks then get a Harley Benton or a Firefly or a Leo Jamzyes or just about any of them and if they're bad to return them. Chances are the next one you get will be great. Maybe I should add that I did get a used Ibanez sa series single coil 22 ft guitar that is great. And the frets were not worn. If you can find any used guitar that doesn't have worn frets then buy it for sure. But most used guitars have worn frets and they aren't worth buying.

I might add Sterling by Music man and Tagima as 2 more brands worth checking out.

Epiphone and Squier have nice guitars in every price range.

Oh man, I used to have major, long-term GAS for a Jackson Soloist, and would have jumped on this deal 4 or 5 years ago, even though I don't prefer that silver finish. Truth is, that's way too much guitar for me. Also, I have a Bradley-branded Jackson/Ibby/Washburn copy with similar features and awesome, deluxe look (and licensed FloydRose) that actually got me most of the way there.

AJ, Hope you are well and doing great. I was fortunate enough to see your vid last week, notifying that this Ricky was available. I jumped, figuring hard to go wrong with IYV based on my previous experience with several IYV's. At under $170, hard to pass on it. Arrived in one day. Unbelievably nice. Really glad I got one. Highly recommended. Finish is very nice, tone is very decent. Strings not so much, but strings are a usual upgrade. Setup was about 90 percent or higher, very playable. Really a fun guitar, nice neck, great fretwork, tuners are very usable. I am so happy I jumped through your link and grabbed one. Thank you for the heads up. So far, I have not gotten a dud from IYV. I donn't have any issue with their picks, even though if I had a list it would vary a little from theirs. I am a Gretsch and PRS fan so would not change thoxe. I would consider a Sire Larry Carlton for the list, some are ad low as $399

There are a couple Schecters I'd add to that list, and Jackson's JS series is quite good

Budget guitar? No way anything over $200 is budget, let alone 500 bucks. This website is just selling ads, so many ads.

I wish Jackson would offer more fixed bridge models in the X series. My experience with the Floyd Rose Special has been terrible. Eventually I will replace mine with a Gotoh

ProAudioStar Sucks. They take forever to give refunds.

I'll stay with sweetwater or guitar center. I don't have to wait weeks to get a refund. I'll never buy from proaudiostar again and i know a lot of musicians that I'm going to tell them to pass on purchasing anything from them.

Proaudiostar is horrible trying to get a refund don'i buy a damn thing from them ever again. I purchased an amp returned it five minutes after i opened the box, the amp was nuxac25 it was just not loud enough still waiting over 2 weeks. They suck.

I have an X Series Rhoads. Good guitars. Great price! Paid $350 for the Rhoads used several years ago.
