    Right , I,ve had chance to think overnight , test the electrical feed wire to the thermostart with a multimeter , in 20 volt sector , with the ign key being held in the preheat position , you should find battery volts , anything less , work backwards & find the fault , bodged wiring , burnt out switch etc . Also check with same meter , but using resistance or continuity sector ( the bit that beeps when you touch the wires together ) & check that the thermostart is earthing to the engine . If all o.k. , check with same meter across the thermostart,s electrical connector , with the key in OFF , to earth again , a complete infinity reading shows a burnt - out element in the thermostart , or a dead short reading shows the element is doing just that , either way , new thermostart plug . These things literally are little flamethrowers so be very careful about working on it . Possible that the needle valve inside said thermostart is stuck down shut , so plug gets hot but never gets any diesel to burn , same answer , replace . When using the thermostart function , get someone to listen accurately to the thermostart plug in the inlet manifold , after about 15 seconds they should hear a sound like a fizzling pop , this is diesel catching fire inside the manifold , if it does that , it ought to work . These are generalised ideas based on my own experiences , you use them at your own risk & discretion . Best Regs .

    Hello guys , we had this problem for years with an old 35 4 cyl , ( 23C standard engine ) & cured it . All starter motors burn out a tiny bit every time you use them , they can still turn the engine over , but not fast enough , they also get so that they use too many amps to do it , these big perkins engines , like many others , need whacking over fast to get the compression & cylinder top end temperature right up so that they,ll fire . Like the guy below says , change your starter for a rebuilt one that is as powerful & as fast as you can get , also change those old fuel filters , getting rid of all the sludge in the bottom of them . This same sludge permeates all of the fuel system , so blast the whole system , from the injector pump back , out with compressed air . Right back to the pipe drawing the fuel out of the tanks , this might have a fine mesh filter on the end , get it out & look at it , or it might be lightly pressing straight down on the bottom of the tank when fitted , this will seriously restrict fuel availlability at any time , again , check it .Also check the tanks can get a supply of air , to prevent a vacuum inside the tank . Some versions of the D.P.A. pump have a tiny gauze disc filter installed right down in the bottom of the low pressure supply union , obviously sludge will quickly block this , don,t take it out & throw it away , it,s done it,s job marvellously , it saved your D.P.A. pump! get it out & clean it then refit . Also thoroughly check your lift pump for cleanliness ( free of all sludge ) & correct output pressure , a weak lift pump can,t shove enough diesel at the D.P.A. to quickly push it,s high - pressure lobes apart in time for the next firing point , so the engine behaves as if the stop is out all the time , it just is not being pumped enough diesel at during cold cranking . Mucky coked up injectors also cause problems , but servicing these must be handled by a qualified technician , as they must crack open at the right pressure , in the right pattern . Do not take any risks with the high pressure injector pipes , these can give you fatal injuries , it,s only a thimble - dampening amount of diesel per stroke , but it,s at one hell of a pressure & it will blast straight into your fingers / hands . Take heed of this bit . Stoke Mandeville is a long way for the surgeon to take your hand off to save your life . Changing the D.P.A. pump itself resurrected our old engine , it was just worn out .Best Of Luck guys , Happy Spanners . ( I still have the old 35 , it,s as old as me & starts cold on thermostart every time )

I will post figures up whenever she's sold id that's 1 year or 10 lol David brown will be up for sale soon which will be netting 4 figure profits. This Massey will be 2-3x the dB profit

    • @jamesbarbour8400
      @jamesbarbour8400 Месяц назад

      The method used to construct the cab is what made them rot out - made of pressed steel panels, following car manufacturing practices, to produce what is known as a monocoque structure. And you're correct - they did indeed use Waxoyl in the cavities between the formed panels to reduce corrosion, again following car practices, where it was a common occurrence to put Waxoyl into the sills. The MF 698 was the last MF tractor to use the Perkins 4-318 engine - actually 4-3182 in this instance - an improved version, but too little, too late. The previous version of the engine was notorious for head gasket issues, both in the MF 1080 and MF 595 tractors - both built at Beauvais, in France. The MF 698 and its 4 - 3182 engine were consigned to history around the mid 80s, and replaced with the 698T, which sported a turbo'd 4 - 236 engine. This was done to achieve commonality of parts across the range and have fewer stand alone parts that had little commonality with anything else, the 4 - 318 /2 engine being one of them. As anyone who lived through the 80s will know, it was an horrendous time financially for all tractor manufacturers, but particularly MF and IH.
