How Much Does It Cost To Make A Comic?
How much does it cost to make a comic book?
Unfortunately there's no true industry standard for comic book page rates. The value of one's art depends on a myriad of factors, including but not limited to experience, output, location, and many other things that are hard to pin point.
I decided to do some research of what people were posting online, as well as conducting a survey to give more information.
Based on my experiences I would say I've observed black and white lettered artwork as low as $85 per page, and fully colored and lettered artwork at $125 or above.
With a normal comic book averaging 28-32 pages of interior art, this can put the cost of a single issue easily at $3,000 for a m...

    Time, sweat and tears! That being said, I'm an illustrator who's been very keen on making comics but didn't have many storytelling chops, so I teamed up with an author friend of mine to get a graphic novel project done- entirely for free! Since it belongs to both of us, we are trying to publish it together. That could be another way to get around the cost thing, befriend an artist who is interested in trying their hand at comics, try to make a story with one of their characters. But it has to be a collaboration, they cannot be working for you nor you for them, you have to work together. I understand this might be rare and difficult to do something like this but those are my two cents.

    hi my best friend and i have been working on a comic together for close to 10 years. we are finally ready to pitch it to these bigger companies. we imagine it being done in 3 acts and there is a lot of story to it. my main question is should we pitch just the first act of the story to them or all three acts? this would be at the very least 200 pages worth of issues because we have every chapter planned out

    • @creatorowned851
      @creatorowned851 25 дней назад

      @creatorowned851 22 дня назад

      @@ivanmartinez498 that’s an ambitious run, though I’ve estimated my own comic could go on about 150 issues if it makes it that far. Even the walking dead only made it 193 issues. I would pitch the idea broadly, and what aspects of the narrative the first volume (6 issues) achieves and just say it will be an “on-going book.” ANYTHING can happen between issues 1 and 200. The book might simply not sell well and get canceled. You want to make sure the publisher knows you have a strategy to hit milestones that are achievable and won’t leave you or the reader in a bad place if things suddenly stop on the project.

      Doing your work in smaller increments like this while you can still gain experience and build a following is definitely the right approach. Image might not accept the book but there’s plenty of smaller publishers out there as well. Having something complete is the easiest way to get it collected and published in a traditional format however. Basically if you have the time to keep doing it on your own, just do it at your pace. There’s a great page called C Cassandra, she does short 4 panel comics on social media but I believe she worked out a book deal with Scholastic, so it’s very much possible that shorts and stories will get noticed if you’re doing good work and being consistent

    Can someone use kickstarter to fund a project in an already established franchise, but not be affiliated with that franchise? Example- if a writer wants to create a pitch packet which would include the synopsis, manuscript and sample art work. But what if the writer isn’t an artist himself and needs the funds to hire an artist to create 6 pages of finished work.

    • @creatorowned851
      @creatorowned851 3 месяца назад

      I would be surprised if no one has at least attempted to fund something like a “Spider-Man fan film” on Kickstarter. To be blunt: NO ONE accepts unsolicited pitches like this (whether comic publishers, film studios, etc) for them it is a legal liability and kind of a taboo, they’ve heard it all before anyway. If you’re going to embark on something I would advise doing your own original work so you have full creative ownership of it and aren’t in a legal grey area of what you can or cannot do with it. For example: Watchmen by Alan Moore could have easily been a property he owned all the rights to, he suggested it to DC using characters like Vision and Blue Beetle, he just “re-skinned” them to be Rorschach and Nite Owl. Similarly tv shows like Critical Role are creating their proprietary Dagger Heart module so they are not under any legal obligation to Dungeons and Dragons which they base all of their characters on.

    Image Central will NEVER even get back about your pitch if you are a no name writer / artist! They only work with high profile names in the biz. So Image this days is only for DC and MARVEL creatives to do side projects. Sucks, but this is the truth! Just look at the names who publish at images for the last 20 years and you can see image is NOT for YOU! It for the Snyders nd Hickmans and Capullos out there. For YOU it is better to do crowdfunding with one completed book!

      That’s more or less my advice: plan on doing your book with or without Image. If you have a completed book it is POSSIBLE they will pick it up, but if you’re not willing to go the distance then yes your chances are likely near zero. Image and Dark Horse fortunately still maintain an open door policy. BOOM! And DSTLRY are creator owned publishers but you’d had to have some kind of agent or following to be considered by those other outlets.

    Nice video! You're working on a project currently, correct? Can you tell us a little about it?

      I definitely plan to share more about my project in the future, but once it’s closer to that phase. I have been leaving Easter eggs in some of my recent videos however ;)

    You're great at breaking this information down. I'm subscribing to follow your journey! I've had writing a comic in the back of my head for years and the information feels very scattered. If you have the time/experience/knowledge I'd love to know about finding an artist as a writer. Where to go to see examples of work, how to approach payment, etc. From what I've read paying upfront per page is a necessity (which is totally valid, I live with a digital artist and know how much artists get screwed over) but then how do you negotiate revenue share and such? If I got paid $1500 for an issue that holds millions of copies I'd be pretty upset. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Keep it up!

      Thanks so much! These are all things I am looking to address. In an upcoming video I mention how most of this is “work for hire / gig economy stuff.” IMO you should pay 50% upfront 50% upon completion so no one gets burned. Even then it can be tough. Some artists are not super concerned with the “what happens next” phase (because it rarely does generate profit) but yeah as a writer you are often the one putting all the investment in which to me means you should get the lions share of the revenue. I’ll do a little more research on this.

    I get this whole thing, the only thing I'm confused about is why they accept only art submissions but not only script/writing submissions.

      If I had to guess it’s probably because you can very quickly judged if someone’s art is up to par, and if so it would be very easy to keep someone in store for filling in on a project. That and when it comes to writing there are legal liabilities if you send someone ideas. This is why Dark Horse has a release form. They’ll just throw away a script if they get it because legally they can’t look at an unsolicited idea.
