To The Limit And Beyond!
The Toughest Team Sport In The World
The origins of the Field Gun Competition lie in the Second Boer War in South Africa.
During the siege of the British garrison in the township of Ladysmith (1899) the British Royal Naval Brigade landed two 4.7 inch guns and four 12-pounder field guns.
For the final part of the journey, sailors from the Naval Brigade manhandled the guns over very difficult terrain. One story tells of sailors carrying the 12 pounder gun for 2 miles after one of the wheels collapsed.
The Royal Tournament was the first, oldest and biggest Military Tattoo in the world, and the Field Gun competition established in 1907 was the much loved beating heart, until the Last Run in 1999, when sadly it was brought to an end.
At each performance of the Royal Tournament, crews from Portsmouth (Pompey) Devonport and Fleet Air Arm competed to transport a 12 pounder field gun and limber over a series of obstacles. Tough!

Should have been back long before now, but just like the rum issue and the Royal Yacht it was stopped out of spite. Beer issue was abused from day one, however much machinery and technical equipment a ship had. That said, this and Britannia were axed because of incompetence - the mid-1990s redundancy package went tits-up in the wording and all the wrong personnel left. Their Lordships then decided to bring in Operator/Maintainer, not quite grasping that a maintainer can be trained to operate, but an operator can only rarely be trained as a maintainer. But the chaos then set in with a vengeance, establishments had to be combined or sold off, large expensive ships that had never run well were scrapped, and new builds just kept on commissioning late. Britannia was a jewel in the fleet which radiated professionalism, naval heritage and tradition, and the Field Gun Race was the most unique test of toughness and agility the world had ever seen. But the flag ranks and four-ringers laid low and kept their perks and titles - that's the important thing.
Real men RIP WATCH DONE
I tried out for guzz when I came off the eagle my sea dad got me passed. The night before, the rest is history
Pissed😊 not passed
Fitness 2024? Old school: Field Gun training 9 months and 5 Gun laps a days
Great memories of this run, such a sad (and proud) night. I'm on here running for the FAA, Loving hearing our Doc Furphy shouting Air Arm in the background...Mini Lou...RIP Command Field Gunning.
Good footage of the Blue Bellies...loved it. Mini Lou..
Greatest team sport, ever was the Devonport Doc in 85 and 86, some familiar faces, served with some of them and a Devonport world record Oggie, Oggie, Oggie
Looking for photographs from 1975 as that was when my dad was part of the Royal Navy field gun. He was on pebble mill at 1 and Blue Peter
Doctors are only called for in cases of EXTREME death!
I've been to the Tattoo in Earls Court as a kid. The Field Gun Crews made it look easy. I didn't realise, at the time, just how tough and dangerous it was. Respect.
I think my brother Tony Vanson ran in 69 his 3rd time running for pompey...
So sad used to love to watch it with family husband and father ex forces
Please bring it back used to watch at home with my ex naval husband was so proud and enjoyed it so much welldone
Great stuff bring it back. Hats off to those past and present field gunners. Super human!
From a time when men were allowed to be men
Camera guy You clown
The toughest, proudest men in the British forces. Absolute animals, when they came into the bar at Earls Court everybody left. What a shame it,s no longer continued
Miss this

Politicians don't understand what makes a military person proud and want to be the best. My respect to the Field Gunners. Fit and tough
I have always marvelled at the teams of the Gun Run! Very well choreographed, indeed. Sadly the Run is no longer performed at the Royal Nova Scotia Military Tattoo, because of injuries in previous years.
Too sad to watch!
Why Not Big Up The Winners........Devonport?
Crime against tradition by Blair and his mates, scandalous
Is that bloke ACTUALLY pulling his MEAT, ON CAMERA @1:51?. If not he's doing an award winning performance of someone who IS!.
1981
If I was in battle, I would want these men on my side.
A country that loses sight of its culture, heritage and history is nowhere. In the current climate of "inclusivity" and "diversity" this kind of tournament and competition that demonstrates elite qualities and skills could not exist. I speak as someone who did the Royal tournament three years running as part of The King's Troop RHA. Granted our skill sets where very different to those of the RN Field Gunners but were equal in contextual expertise. We should all hang our heads in shame as we have allowed our once great nation to be brought to its knees in this way. We have been spoon fed a diet of wet liberal wokeness for decades now so we are now a nation that stands by idly while the products of this doctrine throw the monuments of our heritage and its statues into the river and brands its heroes racists. We support and fund minority, and in some cases, unnatural practises to the extent that the abnormal becomes normal. We are expected to kneel in support of marxist division and witness the on going practise of this without question. The Britain I knew and grew up in would kneel before God and the queen and absolutely no one else. It's all gone to shit. It's time to stand and be counted again. It is time to take pride in who we are and what makes us who we are. If that offends the easily offended than so be it. End of sermon 😊🇬🇧
Very well said. You're absolutely right.
There is an Illustrious class aircraft carrier in the back ground just after 1 minute with a height finding radar aerial above the bridge so has to be after WW2. One sailor has blue cap so before early 50's.
2.50 1972. Staff and crew
Incredible strength of character and sheer guts. A friend of mine took part for FAA. I never fail to be proud of this and our wonderful Navy. Bring it back. X
Fantastic display of military discipline, training and sheer bloody mindedness. Makes you proud to be British.
Tough. Respect.
This is tough. Respect.
Now that is what I call TOUGH. Amazing to watch them.
The Field Gun competition should be brought back. It's a disgrace what's happened to the armed forces of our nation.
Simply the best TV I have ever seen in my 65 years.
my husband ran in this three times .First for Chatham ,then when that closed for Pompey.
Well done lads
When men where men and the government respected them
Metrosexuals , who aspire to being on Love Island, to these real lads... "Do you even lift bro"
what the fuk are you on about?
Bring this back Boris!!!
Amazing to think two people in the world have watched this virtually simultaneously. I’d like to see Boris do it...
No chance. He's New Labour Mk2
The Royal Navy and the United Kingdom military lost one of the best if not the best advertisement for recruitment it has ever had when the politicians decided that the Royal Tournament was to be “demobed” (finished), but in particular the “Gun Run” was a true demonstration of our military prowess and I doubt whether any other military service in the world could match the men of the Royal Navy for teamwork, determination, skill and stamina, they make it look so easy, (after a very long and dangerous training season that is), and to their trainers they obviously have total respect and, I dare say, fear. Once again the political hierarchy put money before tradition, pride, and kudos, they only saw what they wanted to see, and it certainly wasn’t the importance of the whole tournament to the service personnel who were selected to represent their individual branch of the service. Thanks for sharing this interesting and entertaining film. 😀🤬😔👍🇬🇧🏴
time we brought that spirit back
Lol, surprisingly modern haircuts mmm?
I see men in a real Navy- Nelson himself would applaud. Sadly we no longer have a Navy worth comment.
Any Navy that Nelson would be proud of would promptly be shredded to pieces by a single aircraft with 20mm cannon. But yeah, they would look pretty and be able to fire a whole broadside in 60 seconds. It's the 21st century, not the 19th, and the military needs and uses different capabilities than they used to.
Thats a bit harsh. Iv just left after 7 years and been very impressed by the actual type of young 18, 19 year old lads that have joined. Confident, hard working and courageous. They know how to do their jobs and they do it well. Policy and management may admittedly be lacking but the guys themselves are still extremely capable
I wish they would bring back the Royal Tournament again. It was a great way for the public to give recognition and to celebrate our armed forces. We should be proud of every single one of them and the contribution they make to our society.
Remember this as a kid.
I new your dad...he sadly passed away recently I understand?
What did I think of this video? I'm an old sailor from the early 60s and we held these things as tradition, a way of testing ourselves and showing what we could do. I doubt the present day sailors would do the same but that is only because tradition means less and less for whatever reason. God Bless The Queen
Sadly men like this no longer exist
