Tried using the PSBBN and the very last step tells me my drive is not compatible with OPL. How do I get around this as I did what was suggested and I have the drive connected directly to my motherboard
If that doesn't work then the drive itself is not compatible. You will have to try a different drive.
What version of Linux Mint do you use to do this? I tried this weekend with Linux Mint 22 xfce, but I would get all kinds of issues trying to run script #3 (game-installer) where it wouldn't see .venv/bin for python, nssort package/puppeteer etc. In the end my SSD had the PSBBN front end working, corrupted ps2 game ISOs and no working artwork. I noticed in your tutorial your Linux seemed to already have all of these dependencies in place.
I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition. Did you run 01-Setup.sh first? That installs all the dependencies.
@@CosmicScaleFactor I did run the setup first and only tried to install dependencies manually as a response to script 3 errors. I'll try using cinnamon edition next time
Is there an option for network ISO loading?
Not directly from the PSBBN game channel, but you can launch OPL and use that feature there.
This is simply amazing! Huge respect! I just can't believe it!❤❤❤
Will the installer ever be updated to support 128gb disk option? I tried previous versions HDD images copied via hhd raw copy tool, but psbbn can't launch, it gets stuck on ps2 black screen. Anyone has any ideas on how to fix? (or shrink the ps2 disk to 120gb or below after the image has been written?)
The whole point of the 2.0 patch is to support larger drives. The older HDD image should work. Are you using the official Sony Network Adapter? When using third-party HDD adapters, PSBBN freezes just as you described.
@ Actually I am trying to make it work on an SD card, as it’s very convenient to eject it from the extender and have 100MB/s write speed when installing games. Network or usb methods are just too slow in my experience. My setup is: Official HDD adapter->IDE to 2.5IDE->2.5 IDE to SD->flat cable extender to back of the console. All of my collection worked fine with OPL, Pops, SMS, and other homebrew.. When I boot into FMCB to troubleshoot, I can see all partitions created. I guess that PSBBN is a tough nut.. and will require me to mod my Sony Hdd adapter to sata+256GB SSD at the end..

Do my games have to be ZSO or ISO? I’ve used the newest version of PSBBN and my games still don’t show up as they should. Linux however is working great! All my games are in iso format
Both zso and iso should work without any problems. Submit an issue of GitHub with the game-installer.log and I'll try to figure out what is going wrong.
@ definitely will. Thanks again homie.
@@CosmicScaleFactor log sent. thank you for the time.
Is there any way to desync the Games folder and the Games in the SSD with the installer script? It keeps deleting my games.
That is just how the game installer works. It synchronises the games from the folders on your PC to the PS2 drive. If you remove games from the 'games' folder on your PC, they are also removed from the PS2 drive. If you add games to the 'games' folder on your PC, they are added to the PS2 drive. I know the current game sync method may not be ideal for everyone. I plan to implement a more flexible solution in the future. If the problem is a lack of HDD space on your PC, then there is a workaround for now: 1. Rename all your game files so their filenames start with the Game ID, then sync them. 2. Replace the game files on your PC with zero-size files that have identical names. 3. Add more games to the 'games' folder, then re-sync.
Will this work with the gamestar sata adaptor?
All clone adapters lack an Ethernet port, PSBBN simply won't boot without one. Hopefully a third-party will make a modern HDD adapter with network support in the future.
Does it work on ps3 ( not like launching ps3 games on it, just as a front end to run ps2 on it ) If not please add support for it That would be legendary I can test it for you if you want.
No chance of this working on PS3. This isn't a game launcher, it's a complete operating system.
@CosmicScaleFactor hmmmm i wish the community can figure smth out, i have a ps3 that can run linux and ps2 and ps3 games Is there like a container or using the ps2 compatibility to run that os, since it has all ps2's hardware functionality working on ps3 PSBBN can be a game changer for ps3 and ps2
Silly question but is it possible to use or access any of these channels via the PSX DESR? Thanks
@@AmbientMess I don't have a PSX to play with but it should be possible to access the online channels by modding a couple of files.
can i install PSBBN besides my already modded ps2 with a HDD full of games and FreeMCBoot? it's a bit confusing for me
No. This is a complete replacement. You won't need FreeMCBoot anymore. The install formats your drive and you will have to install your games again, the new way.
Hi, great work! I have just one question, does this support the chd file format? thanks!
@@SirotkaSlo No, however PS2 games can be compressed to zso
@@CosmicScaleFactor great, thank you!
I never comment on anything, but I wanted to thank you for your hard work, you’re a genius at this point Just two very particular question: -Is it possible to install all of this on a SSD and then put this SSD with a SATA adapter inside the original BB Unit (External via PCMCIA) of the first version of the Japanese PS2 ? I know it can fit, but I don’t know if it will boot or if the board on the BB Unit will allow it. -Would it boot on a Test PS2 (with internal SSD) without MagicGate support ? I assume no because we'll have to use OpenTuna to initialize the hack, and from there we can't reboot into PSBBN... Thanks again!😊
I don't know for certain but I think it would work on the original BB unit with the HDD replaced with a SSD. It's definitely worth a try! As for the Test PS2, I have no idea.
@Thanks! Then I’ll try when I have time and report back to you
So this can actually play PS1 backups with out using something like PoP or whatever? It just runs like it would from disc? If so then i have to redo my PS2 stuff.
PS1 games still use POPS. The POPS emulator actually originates from PSBBN.
This is super cool. Thanks for all your work. I love the PSBBN interface so much. Brings back lots of memories and your tutorial was super easy to follow. Couple of questions. First, how do you change the individual game OPL settings? Getting games like FF12 and Outrun2k6 to work properly require some disk read settings to be tweaked and I can't figure out how to do it in PSBBN. Second, would it be possible for the game install script to not delete games that are not in the game folder? I'm pulling all my games from an older OPL installation and don't have the disk space to store everything locally.
You can launch OPL by selecting one of the "Coming soon..." games in the Game Channel or using wLaunchELF. Afterward, adjust any OPL settings as usual. Note: To display the games in OPL, make sure to enable HDD under BDM Devices. I know the current game sync method may not be ideal for everyone. I plan to implement a more flexible solution in the future. In the meantime, here's a workaround: 1. Ensure all your game filenames start with the Game ID, then sync them. 2. Replace the game files on your PC with zero-size files that have identical names.
@@CosmicScaleFactor That worked. Thank you so much for all the amazing work you put into this.
there is a hdlgameinstaller which allow make partitions bootable, it will be very useful to have modification of this soft with support of making bootable PP. paritions. plus selecting kelf manually, diretly doing all on ps2
Not possible, due to the way APA-Jail works. All partitions need to be created before running APA-Jail. Deleting or creating new partitions on your PS2 drive after setup will cause drive corruption.
@@CosmicScaleFactor im talking not about creating or deleting, so hdlgameinstaller (ps2 not pc client) let us inject boot.kelf and other necesary files to hdl partitions just like hdl dump. so im talking about to replace hdl dump with modded hdlgameinstaller which can detect PP. partitions and give us possibility to inject our custom kelfs and necessary res files for bbn. it will be usefull for less use pc for organize games. sorry for my bad english)
@@multigamer798I'm not sure about being able to get that working directly on the PS2. It's definitely a feature that could be added to the game installer script in the future.
can somebody explain to me why should we go to all this trouble ,and not use pcsx2 emulator...i want to know the pros and cons..thank you
It's fun pushing the original hardware to its limits and getting it to do things that were previously impossible. If you want HD graphics and texture packs then go with an emulator, if you want to experience that games how they were intended and like to tinker then original hardware is the way to go.
@@CosmicScaleFactor thanks!!
Apparently, a live distro doesn't work, if you either install linux directly on your drive (maybe a spare one without even modifying the bootloader on the main one, if you don't care to boot from the BIOS bootloader) or on a virtual machine (like me) everything is fine. After the installation, i've made some tests: reaching the game list is not patologically slower than putting HD loader as the first entry in freeMCBoot or FreeHDDBoot (you still have to press down twice because browser and system configuration always comes first), PS1 and 2 games uses two different columns in FreeHDLoader, while PSBBN puts them in two consecutive groups, if you're playing one game at once the autostarter makes it even faster compared to PSBBN; if instead you're playing multiple games at once, the shortchuts on the navigator menù are more comfortable (is there a way to put that channell as the first/main one?), i also wonder if i can force the italian language in games that doesn't have a selection screen/option, without pretending a full translation of PSBBN. I even tried to backup, wipe, and then restore the drive with clonezilla: the first two partitions (128GB and 32MB) aren't recognized, you can still backup them but because the software can't distinguish between space in use and free space, it will make a "carbon copy" of every bit (so, the total size will be slightly more than 128GB), the third partition containing the games as .iso files is exfat, so the software will be able to copy only the space in use and compress the data.
A live distro does work, you just need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and remove the line starting with `deb cdrom` before running 01-Setup.sh. There is a note on the readme. I'm planning to add a live distro check to the setup script soon that will automate this. EDIT: The Setup script has now been modified to work on live USBs without errors
@CosmicScaleFactor lol, my bad! 😝 what about the other details, like, force a specific language for a game without a selection screen?
@@sospyro I believe there's an option in OPL for that.
@@CosmicScaleFactor i also tried to install PSBBN with Xubuntu: everything is fine except for the artwork installation, the script says that maybe npm is not installed correctly, but if i try to install it manually it's already installed
@@sospyro seems like a problem isolated to Xubuntu. If you find a solution let me know.
My weekend was free this week guess its not now lol
Bro this made me cry,i made copy of this theme for opl, guess time to rip old ps2 from basement and load this puppy up
This amazing work! What about main PS2 menu, does HDD show up in Browser with memory cards with this PSBBN Definitive build? 🤩😊If yes, how it calculates free space with hybrid build. Thanks!
PSBBN has its own "Save Data Management" feature that allows you to manage your save files on memory cards and backup them up to the HDD.
I know this is slightly unrelated to the project (I do love it, hoping I can get it set up soon) but what song is playing in the video?
That is the actual background music from the PlayStation Now! channel.
@@CosmicScaleFactor ah thank you!!
How do you have the ps2 video out put so nice? When ever I use a converter or some such it looks all jittery until I get into a game. Is my copy of OPL just super outdated? Either way super cool project, can't wait to try it out.
I've got a Retro GEM HDMI mod. They're pricey and difficult to install but I'd highly recommend them.
Thanks brother!
Thanks for updating this!
Is it possible to add Game ID as an OPL-level feature (like Grimdoomer OPL) so PS2 owners who have the OEM broadband adapter, but not an HDMI mod, can benefit from Game ID for MemCard Pro etc.?
@@kristopheralonge2813 before releasing this update I was working on a lot of game id projects for the Retro GEM. I'll be adding Retro GEM game id support to this project soon. If I can get my hands on a MemCard Pro 2 then I'll definitely add support, I really want one but they're always out of stock!
@@CosmicScaleFactor They are currently available to preorder on StoneAgeGamer and they ship this month!
Really awesome job , ps2bbl was considered lost media for a long time, and I’m thrilled to see it updated. I really hope it becomes even more accessible . Oh and I have a question Is it possible to make it pass the Ethernet check or make the console think that there's an Ethernet adapter connected? So people without official adapters can use it
@@huko_k1 Thanks, I never expected this project to get so much attention. I would love to see it working on third-party adapters but I'm not sure if it would actually be possible. Definitely needs investigating.
Just pushed a big update for the art downloader! It now fetches significantly more artwork. If you've already downloaded the "PSBBN Definitive English Patch 2.0," navigate to the directory, run `git pull`, and then re-sync your games to update the artwork

Dumb question: Is it possible to run it via USB Drive?
Unfortunately not, it requires an internal drive.

Hey, this video is fantastic, I had absolutely no knowledge of the original source material or this project, but I am blown away and really want to give this a try at some point! As for this not being doable on Windows, could you not install WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) and run it that way (if someone didn't have a dedicated linux machine or linux VM? I absolutely love this project! an interesting question for you, say perhaps you had 2 PS2s setup this way (for light gun games) and you had the ilink cable connecting the two consoles for Time Crisis 2 dual console/screen system link, would that work or would the ilink be disabled/cause problems in some way?
Somebody else asked about WSL. If you have Windows 11 (Windows 10 definitely won't work) and your PS2 drive connected directly to the motherboard and not via USB then maybe. I don't have access to Windows 11 so can't try it myself. If you want to give it a try have a look at this article to help get the disk mounted. Let me know if you're successful learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/wsl2-mount-disk It would only cause problems if you had an external iLink HDD connected. PSBBN tries to boot games from the first BDM device it finds. If you've got other devices connected it might try to load the game from there, rather than the internal drive.
Do U think that in the future PSBBN will work on ps2 slim?
It requires an internal HDD. It's technically possible on a slim SCPH-7000x console but it takes a very difficult hardware mod macho-nacho.com/news/the-ide-resurrector-mod-makes-the-ps2-slim-superior-to-phat/
bro you have createad the master peace of the PS2, thank you!!! for all of us users
How is game compatibility compared to Grimdoomer's OPL fork? In the description it states that it supports 700 games, is this only covering games that are confirmed to be compatible or is it just (about) 700 and no more?
Compatibility should be better than Grimdoomer's fork, this is based on a very current version of OPL. All features from the fork included with this project will be heading to the official version of OPL soon! 700 games is the max number of games that can be displayed in the PSBBN Game Channel. You could continue to add games beyond that and they will show up in OPL only.
@CosmicScaleFactor Oh I see, thank you very much for answering and for your hard work at making the program!
First off thank you for this awesome contribution, this looks amazing. My question is does this support the mem card pro game id? Sorry if this was already asked.
Does the official build of OPL support it now or does it still require a custom build? If it works on the latest official build then it will work here. I don't have a MemCard PRO2 for testing, I'm hoping to get one when they restock, if game id doesn't work I'll definitely be adding it! I'll be adding Game ID for the Retro GEM soon.
@@CosmicScaleFactor I think it requires a specific build thats listed on 8-bit Mod's site
This is incredibly impressive. There's a good chance my own XEB+ neutrino Launcher project would not exist if this had been around six months ago. I've come to prefer neutrino over OPL in that time, so I don't plan to switch over anytime soon, but I will if it becomes possible to use neutrino as a back-end.
Thanks! I've been following your work. Your Python list builder script was very helpful, in the project it's being used for PS2 games and PS1 games. I've credited you on my GitHub. Neutrino is definitely a possibility in the future, unfortunately right now it doesn't support exFAT on internal drives. EDIT: What??? Neutrino does support exFAT on internal drives! Definitely something to look into in the future.

I also tried using Linux on ps2 and it’s asking for a login? However I haven’t even used it yet so how am I to know the username/password for it?😂 no idea how to proceed with this. Help needed. Thank you!
Account details are in the readme on GitHub. The root password for Linux is password. There is also a ps2 user account with the password set as password. Type `startx` to launch the GUI.
@@CosmicScaleFactor I attempted the username ps2 and password as password and i get a message saying “ the system is going down on (current date and time) Power Failure; system shutting down Login incorrect Login:” I presume I should note this in my submission on GitHub?
I’m having an issue where all my installed games just show up as “corrupt data” in the collection and the only openable app in it is labeled “coming soon!” And opens opl. I’ve wiped and reinstalled the whole process twice but I can’t seem to figure out what’s causing this. Also I believe I’m having trouble with artwork, do my games have to be named a certain format? Like having the game code in the name such as for gran turismo 3 for example. Do I have to have SCUS-97102 in the file name?
The filename used for games do not matter. This sounds more like a permissions issue to me. Submit the log file on GitHub and I'll take a look.
@@CosmicScaleFactor log file sent. in the mean time, I'll create a linux mint media and try again on that instead of ubuntu. I'll post back if thats solves my problems or not.
even have drawback but i accept i got weird setup when i try 2.0(mean delete old ver in drive) and install ps1 ps2 game seem normal same thing when boot psbbn too but when try to start ps2 game it always goes opl and did't not show any game while ps1 game play normal. Maybe i will try agine later but anyway this is good improvement even i dont want touch linux....
I'm not sure what could be causing that issue. If you can submit the log file on GitHub I'll take a look. As for games not appearing int OPL, you need to change the settings. For `BDM Devices` turn on `HDD`.
This is amazing! Thank you for the effort and hard work! Maybe one day in the future we can have it boot straight to the collections screen.
It's possible to do, I just want to keep things working as close to the original Japanese software.
Awesome, question, how does saving work? For some reason my PS2 still looks good memory cards in slot one. Is there another step I'm missing for it to save to the HDD?@@CosmicScaleFactor
@@Nickachuuu Personally I'd recommend still using a memory card but you can set up Virtual Memory Cards in OPL if you want to. PSBBN has a "Save Data Management" system that lets you easily backup save files to your internal drive, they just need to be copied back to a memory card to be used with a game.
