Writing Out-of-Character Fanfiction is Fine, Actually
In my last two videos, I put out-of-character writing on trial. This time, I'm coming to its defence! There are 4 reasons why a fanfic writer may choose to write out-of-character on purpose. Sometimes a little OOC writing is what it takes to elevate your fanfiction into something special 💖

    The most important thing, imo, is keeping the chapter lenght somewhat consistent. I've haven't finished a greaf fic once because it started with four chapters that made around 30k words together when I found it. I devoured it and then was waiting for the last chapter, rereading it a few times in the meantime and all. And then the last chapter was posted, 40k words. I didn’t open it for a few days, scared by sheer length, then actually got around to it, but I just haven’t managed to finish. It's different when fic has all chapters lenght of a novel, but with this one just hit me like a truck. And from the parts I did read, I don't see why they didn’t chop it to a few normal length chapters and just increased the chapter count. Though I'm thinking about giving it another go, it was an amazing fic

    My WIP is a long-running series with each 'season' reaching about 15k words; What I do is write the entire season, and then break it down into chapters where it feels natural to pause (or give a cliffhanger). Most chapters end up being about 1-1.5k. I just posted a pair of chapters a few weeks ago with one reaching about 1.7k and the second one at only 850ish. But a short chapter was the only option, with the last scene of the long chapter ending in a 'mental snap' of a character, and the short chapter being the damage done because of that 'snap'. I have an average of 10-15 chapters in each season (with a disclaimer beforehand) and I include a 'coming soon' scene of the following season when I'm done with it and know when it's going to be posted (which can be anywhere from one paragraph to seven paragraphs).

    Not to be random or anything, but if you could create a video explaining how to use and create a fanfiction collection on Ao3 I would be forever grateful! They just don't make sense to me at the moment, but I've seen other authors use them in a way that helps them organize their stories. Thank you so much either way ❤ (◍•ᴗ•◍)✧*。

    • @CoraMaria
      @CoraMaria 5 дней назад

      I don't have any experience with making collections on AO3, but those aren't something authors use to organise their own stories. They're more so for reader recommendations or fandom events. Are you thinking of series? This tutorial I made goes into it. Check the time codes in the description for the parts you're after: ruclips.net/video/4Fjjppq8sJQ/видео.html

    Weirdest epithets I’ve ever seen were in Tokyo Revengers fanfic of all places-“The Tiger-haired boy”, “The piss-haired blond”, etc. Some got really long, even including multiple epithets into one! I will say that, as with any part of language, there is a place for this kind of epithet use in writing. I usually stick to names and pronouns but I might use an epithet instead if I’m trying to emphasize/call attention to a particular aspect of the character. For example, in one fic there’s a character who’s secretly (and reluctantly) royalty-in the instances where she’s speaking/acting as queen, contrary to her usual demeanor, I would refer to her as “the queen” (or by her specific title in instances when the destiny/ spiritual aspects of her crown are what’s relevant). It can be used to add a lot of nuance so long as it’s 1) used sparingly 2) motivated (not using it just to use it) and 3) used to indicate the capacity in which the character is relevant (e.g. the difference between Link the Person vs Link the Hero vs Link the Weirdo Down the Street vs Link the Grandson vs Link the Brother vs Link the Concept vs Link the Etc)

    I’m willing to accept a lot of OOC-ness in fanfic as long as there’s a good reason for it-and as long as there’s still something that matches up with canon. Say you’re writing an AU where a character who was canonically an extremely powerful, eons-old demon of decay is now an ordinary human high school student. Obviously they won’t have demonic powers anymore, and their views on humanity will be those of a young human, not an unknowably ancient being of evil and rot that predates mortal life as we know it, but they still need to in some way be the character we know. Maybe their canonical command over the legions of hell could translate to them leading a gang of delinquents in this AU. Maybe their canon self’s association with decay could mean that their AU self grosses out their classmates by being willing to eat food well past its expiration date. Some of their canonical personality quirks will work in any setting and can just be carried over unchanged. There’s exploring alternate versions of characters, and then there’s writing an OC wearing a canon character’s name and face.

    my characters end up OOC quite a bit and I was little worried but most of the time i just end up straying towards fanon because I don't like the most recent season which kinda threw out a lot of the growth i was hoping for the character to get plus i change their backstory to make the changes make sense, people still get mad about it but im writing primarily to make myself happy so I've stopped caring all that much

    My favorite fanfiction for a specific anime actually made one of the main characters OOC by turning him FtM Trans, and I love it so much! It managed to tell a very interesting story outside of canon, and is the main reason that fic is one of my favorites to this day. The only reason I don't write fics like that is because there are plenty out there, and I'd like to put my fanfiction focus towards building fandoms for my favorite crossover crackships, since I'm apparently the first to think of a surprising amount of them, so they don't have content for me to consume. Basically, no one is baking my favorite flavors of cake, so I'm rolling up my sleeves and getting to work on correcting that!

    I like to bullet point random ideas I have for my fic in the top of its file. I don't always keep the ideas, it's just good to have the list on hand so I vaguely know where I'm going. I once scrapped half an outline into my writing graveyard file because I wanted to rewrite some of it, and rework or replace the rest of the scrap. Bonus to having a writing graveyard: I get to restore any amount of what's scrapped if I decide I want it, and it's restored 100% without being affected by my poor memory!

    I'm trying to write this gravity falls fic that's based on the song 'Kleptomaniacrow' by Madilyn Mei, it does nothing for the canon and the only difference is that Bill is much much younger at around 2000 years old, but essentially he was once a human boy and he got his soul stolen by a crow, blah blah blah, but the fic is gonna start all the way back when he was human, I'll dedicate a chapter to his soul being snatched n' crap but the rest is going to be from when he first became a demon all the way to the end of weirdmageddon and then I might write a sequel for after the events of the show but I have no clue how to write satisfying timeskips because I'm not writing every day from what is basically year number 1 all the way to 2012 so uh, oopsies. I'm not in over my head. I've totally figured out what to name this AU and school definitely doesn't have my dumbass in a chokehold. May the gods have mercy on my soul.
