In my first video review with the Singular Audio filterdrve I wanted to show the more subtle side of it, what it could do not just in an effects way but how you could use it whilst tracking, mixing and producing. I had loads of fun and cant wait for Part#2. The unit comes in both mono & stereo For more information Singular Audio filterdrve www.singularaudio.nl/shop/filterdrvestereo Download lin...

The Tape Simulator Series Part#1 HRK ST552 vs RND 542
For me the best stereo image went for the cream the Vertigo and the Dione. For grabby stuff the Stam and VErtigo and Cream. The busscat was also good one. I didn’t like the warm audio nor the shadow. The stam was just ok for me.
Nice comparison. Camden mojo is where its at! I had ever heard of it before.
Lovely comparison. The two Telefunken were my favorites.
Thanks for the demo! Thats a nice bass tone with the 552. The 542 sounds crispy on the master bus.
fire
I challenge anybody to tell me when eq's are in or bypassed or differences from eq to eq with their eyes closed. You cant. Thanks for your work here but what would have been more helpful is to maybe dig in more, boost each unit say the low end at a specific frequency by 3-4 even 5 db's then let us hear each unit with that boost. This way we could hear how each unit actually compares. Then do the same with hi and mid frequencies. 👍
With all the fuss people make about the g-comp ssl, the bus+ doesn't make that much of a difference..
Hey Man, great job, but I've downloaded your files and Nekotronics BussCat, Wes Audio Dione, Stam Audio 4k-5 and Shadow Audio SB4000 are 180° phase reverse compared to the other files ;-) Better you check connections in your studio 🙂
Those two Vs are something else. Neve is as expected. Big shout out to the humble BLA Auteur, didn't expect anything but it's actually really sweet.
I barely hear any difference. In a blind test I would fail miserably. The tegeler sounds different though. More low mids
I've owned the Roger Mayer 456HD 500 series units and the RND 542. I just received my ST552 pair last week and I am putting them through the paces. The Roger Mayer 456 don't have much headroom in them for modern recording levels. I had to crank my master down lower than I was comfortable with. I owned an MCI JH24 for many years, and the ST552 sound reminds me of it. I prefer the lowend bum in the 552 in 15IPS over the 542. It's easy to muddy up your tracks with the 542.
This was an awesome shoot out. You are definitely causing some issues with decision making. 🤦🏾♂️😂 Now it comes down do I want name brand and smooth low end? Or big warmth and high mids? They both do something you would like on a mix!!
Terrible demo. Running an already heavily distorted vocal thru two distortion devices. Impossible to tell what each device is doing.
What is that 1178? It actually looks like a plugin? If so, I wasnt aware of an 1178 other than the Pulsar version
People that say they can't hear any difference: go buy better monitor speakers. SPL does something that none of these brands does, listen closely to the bass. And Im totally not 'empressed' by the Empress or is that just me?
great video
I wish these had step knobs
The best youtube videos
You got the best Reviews bro
tierra was the best at my opinion...It's nothing like ssl but I like the color what it's give for the tracks... And the wierd is i never heared about them...🤨
THAT BLUE EQ SOUND IS EVERYTHING!!!
Hrk sounds like garbage
This is a chick . Mike yeah right...
I LOVE THE “DARK TONE” OF those HRKS .. ST552 Smooth
Keep it up brother
I JUST BROUGH IT! Lets see. Exciting .. this sounds really good nice, Melodic Eq and Dark backround
You just cannot beat CAPI for the money. It's unbelievable that you can get a preamp of that quality for so cheap. I've got a CAPI vp28 and one of their FC526 FET compressors. It's my go to pre for vocals and drums. The combo is so good, you can compress super hard and still sound great.
Why not track the vocals through the ST552’s too?
Are these the tracking chain or are these insters during mixing?
I’m unsure what good this comparison is offering the listeners. The stuff was pre recorded thru another device, wouldn’t it be more revealing to have a single performance split and recorded simultaneously to get a better effect of each device? I still can’t grasp the idea of running line level thru a mic level preamp intended for complete different impedance load and level etc
There's a load of great compressors here, but the Creme and Dione really steal the show for me. :D
SSL !!!
Are those images of the hardware accurate to their settings? The settings are clearly different. Level matching is good, and tweaking the side chain filter to match the other units by ear is fair. But the bus+ is on auto release it appears AND in mid side? While the Stam is .01 release and the neko is 4:1 vs 1.5:1 on Stam. The settings change in each song so I'm thinking they are accurate. I really liked the overall tone of the Stam the best but I can't rely on that if the settings were just better for the first two songs. Really wanted to like the bus+ the best and didn't like the older Stam in older shootouts so my bias is reversed to my preference which is a good sign against "confirmation bias" Plus I listened first with my eyes closed and only heard the sound *pop* once in the first song. Went back and did it again and opened my eyes on the sound to see the Stam, so I played blind.
Thanks for the video, Mike! It's interesting hearing and confirming the Stam/Wes Audio/Warm Audio produce the same characteristics I hear in my studio.
SSL Comp meters didn’t work? No lights
He had basically no level on those to operate.
SSL Gain not enough for trigger threshold 😅😅😅 so sad demo
are those isoacoustics for the monitors? where did you get them?
Neko
Stam tegeler cats👍
04:21 bypass 04:29 cats 05:05 stam 04:47 ssl 05:23 tegeler
they all sound similar. And the difference in money is quiet big between some units
It's funny how people in the comments often choose the stam and get disappointed with dione. The fact is that the stam emulates a 4k buss comp, which already has quite serious thd, and dione has thd mode disabled, which makes it much cleaner. To compare with some compresors from that test dione must have thd mode enabled. And then suddenly it becomes bigger, brighter, more detailed and tight.
What converters are you using.
Uad apollo 8p
Just curious why you didn't use the same silk color on both comparisons? Some A/B's use the same, and some don't. The Blue and Red are very different curves on my 542's. I don't have the HRK's, but I'd assume they're silk settings are supposed to be similar? Throws off half the examples if you're comparing apples to oranges 🙂
Hey thanks for the comment. When I did the test I was going for what sounded best rather than an A/B test. Sadly don't have the 542s anymore so I can't do an actual A/B test. But I still have the HRKs and for me they were to similar to warrant keeping them both, especially in mono instances. The only thing that the 542s had over 552s was in stereo mode, I found the 542s had a slightly better image but I found I didn't like using tape on the master bus which at the time was my main stereo use.
Much more clarity in the 542.
HRK NICE AND DARK .. Nice
I'm working on creating a very similar chain. Camden 500, HRK CS566, WesAudio Dione, HRK ST552, HRK ST596 in a Midas L10. I'm still waiting for all my HRK and WesAudio modules to come in. Thanks so much for the video, everything sounds great.
That Tube Tech is the one on this demo for me, but it was also one of those who was lesser pushed. I think you drove the Empirical Labs a lot compared to the others didn't you? BTW the songs are all dope!
Wow that Gainlab audio is soooo bold
Liked the Seventh Circle Audio, felt like putting on a pair of slippers. The P1 was the most transparent, the Lundahl one was second to the Seventh Circle for me, on this song.
It's a nice comparison but the settings tend to be quite different from one to another don't they?
Agreed. Also the amount of GR displayed by the meters varies drastically. Sometimes its 60Hz HP, sometimes 100Hz. Sometimes Release is slowest, sometimes its Auto. ... The idea of the video is absolutely great, but this is a missed chance. Correct way to proceed in my eyes would be: 1. set all comps to the same settings. (or as similar as possible) 2. Adjust the thresholds so that the displayed GR is the same. 3. Level-match. ... Also I noticed a phase flip. Though not being sure if it was induced by the comp itself, one could take that out to easy the comparison.
