Cutting Board Fail - Teton Range Part 2
I really wanted this to work but I think my second attempt at making a cutting board that looks like the Teton Range was a partial fail. A for effort?

How to Build a Cutting Board Without a Planer
Просмотров 36 тыс.3 года назад
If you enjoy woodworking and have always wanted to build an edge grain cutting board but felt like you couldn't do it because you don't have a planer this how-to video is for you. The end result is a cutting board that measures 11 1/2" x 18" x 1 3/8". www.rockler.com/walnut-by-the-piece-3-4-thickness www.rockler.com/cherry-by-the-piece-3-4-thickness millcovewoodworks facebook.com...
Heck I'll ask : why did the pocket screws go on the outside or did u catch it later on . Next up chairs into benches 😉 fun piece
Fun-tastic!
Could you cut down the sides to make them shorter
What kind of wood did you use? If you stated it in the video, I apologize for missing it.
It was pine, nothing fancy.
@@millcovewoodworks1484 It looked beautiful, and much nicer than Home Depot pine 😆
This is such a great idea, thank you!
Did you have any green showing after you stained it? I know poplar has that greenish hue to it
Not at all but the poplar I was working with had very little green in it. What was there just ended up being a little darker with the stain but the green didn’t show.
Has it held up well? I've heard poplar dents too easily to be suited for tables.
No issues but we have been pretty careful for that reason. Poplar is definitely not hard like other hardwoods.
You did use a “planner”…. 😂
What a good idea. I've seen them made out of a headboard before but not a crib. Cribs are easier to get a hold of
How much do u sell them for
How does the glue hold up
Could I make a table like this out of shorter poplar instead of the large boards? If so, what would be the process?
I know it's been a while since you've posted this video, and hopefully you'll respond to a question, but do you remember how long the total process was for this project? Most things I make for myself, but I like to pay myself for a job by knowing I made an X amount of value for an 8 hr day, 10 hr day, etc.
Gorgeous work! The color is a great choice and goes well with the craftsmanship. Great job!
This is slow enough you can watch it in 2x speed with no issues. You’re welcome.
Looks great! Plan on doing the same. Did you remove the old paint first? What kind of paint did you use? Sprayed on or hand painted? Thank you.
I've heard good feedback about the woodglut instructions.
Very useful brother! Looks nice!
Looks fantastic
Round two! I think it looks pretty good 👍🏼
Thanks, I appreciate that.
I saw the first attempt and thought that was a good idea. I also enjoyed watching you make it. Obviously the making has a lot of a learning curve. :) One day I was looking at how to insert curved strips in a cutting board and came across the video link below. I remembered your first try and thought that I found the method that would work, without days of filing and sanding to make it fit well. I'm not sure if it will make sharp angles easily without a very, very steady hand but you'll probably find the video interesting. ruclips.net/video/3mqrIGp-PQ8/видео.html
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for sharing the video! I should have known there was a tool out there that would do this more efficiently, and accurately, than cutting by hand. Definitely worth the money if this was something I was gonna do often.
Great job! I too until recently did my projects workout plainer, router, palm sanders and so on. However I’ve recently broke down and bought a few of those gadgets to make my projects easier given my bad back. However I must add I bought them used not brand spanking new. 😆 But 1st time watching your video. You did a great job and the board came out beautiful. I will be making a couple different size cutting boards for my wife. Tonight in conversation she mentioned she was going to order some news boards online. Now my wife loves and appreciates my builds so she is in for a wonderful surprise. So thank you sir and oh I DID subscribe. 🙏
This is lovely. We had a stillbirth and then went on to have 3 more kids. I bought the crib originally for by daughter who ended up passing at 24 weeks. I would like to do the same with the crib as everyone has outgrown it now. Do you think it will stand up okay in the weather. I planned to put in my yard but we love in Canada and get lots of snow. It is hardwood and wasn't sure is I need to bring it in in the winter and if it will withstand then rain or if I am best to keep it indoors?
I’m so sorry for your loss Molly. I built a similar crib bench for my Mom and used exterior paint so she could use it outside. She has had it for about 6 months now and hasn’t had any issues. Be sure to use exterior screws and I think it would do okay.
This time I will do it manually with the help of Woodglut designs.
Just google Stodoys and make some dust.
Thousands of lifetime projects with Woodglut plans.
You can tell this is made by a newbie, where are the hand held grips and the cushion rubber feet for the cutting board??? Why are you routing the wrong way???? Why did you use the wrong type of brush to spread the glue???? When you were cutting the edges of your cutting board I noticed you have a dewalt planer under your cabinet to my right side, I always say if you have it use it!!!! Stop trying to fool the people that are beginning the wood working field, most of them don't even know how to use a hand plan so let them save there money so they can buy a planner, enough with the B.S.
That’s a lot of feedback to take in all at once. 😂
Дерьмо а не доска. Торцы с какой стороны? Такие доски школьники делают.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Put a strip of masking tape on your clamp bars. In time the glue will build up and cause problems using the clamps. And it’s a major pain removing the glue.
tried doing this without a planner and there are just too many variables and too many sheets of sandpaper needed to get all the boards perfectly straight, same thickness, etc., in the end i found it was worth the money to go out and get a planner, i got a wen, very nice.
The trick is getting one side as close to flat as possible during the glue up so you can use it for the bottom. I don’t think it’s as important for the top to be perfectly flat. That being said, I agree that the planer is worth the money. Enjoy the Wen, I’ve had good experiences with their tools.
We are doing the same thing, but we're worried that the seat wasn't going to be sturdy enough without either it's own legs or a center support, what do you think?
As long as your bench will be a similar width you should be fine. I’ve built four of these and I haven’t had any issues. Good luck!
Lovely job. I have made it my goal never to buy a planer... One tip I could offer is to make sure that the edge grains of the strips are all facing the same direction before gluing up. So when (NB when - not if!) you do pull out that hand plane you don't find yourself smoothing one strip but tearing out the one next door.
Thank you,! Finally a video I can use that doesn't require a planer and jointer.
Love this piece! Another great job and video!!!
good job.
Great instructions!
The idea of doing this without a planer is great, but you can definitely see a bow in your board. Most noticeable when you were sanding it, you could see it rocking. Thats the exact reason the planer is needed, unfortunately. Guess i will just have to bite the bullet and get one.
You’re right but the uneven side was the top. The bottom was perfectly flat. I probably could have spent a little more time working on the top to get it perfectly flat but I wasn’t quite as concerned with it.
Beautiful! Is there a reason you only glued and didn’t both glue and nail?
The glue is more than strong enough to hold over the long term.
Jackie, glue is actually stronger than nailing it. Plus I've never heard of nailing a cutting board. In reference to using nails or brads, I often times use that in conjuction with my projects so I can continue working on them while the glue dries. I believe it was Steve Ramsey who did a test on different joints using only glue, and the board snapped before the glued joint did. Hope that helps clear it up for you!
Looks great! Thanks for the tips!
I was thinking the tape/ca glue as soon as you said how you were going to cut the mountains. You probably got the gaps because of how the band saw blade cuts curves. The blade takes out more material on curves than just the edge cut due to the dimensions of the blade. The blade doesn't bend in a curve so it needs to take out more material on one side of a curved cut. Maybe use a scroll saw the next time? They have very thin blades. Nice job by the way, it looks great.
Thanks! I don’t think my scroll saw would have handled the thickness of the boards stacked but I agree it would handle the curves better. Might try again with cutting the boards one at a time. It would also give me the opportunity to have sharper edges so it actually looks like mountains. 😂
This might be a silly question but - this is not an end grain cutting board, right? The surface of the board is not the end grain of the wood...
Correct, this is not end grain it’s edge grain.
Pretty sure this is a real stupid question but I am new to making cutting boards so can you explain to me what you mean by "raising the grain" (@10:05)? Nice to finally see someone make a cutting board without using a planer! Turned out awesome :-)
When you wet the board down it will cause the wood fibers to rise and will make it feel slightly rough. By using water first and then doing a final sanding you won’t have those raised fibers when you apply the mineral oil. Hope that helps.
@@millcovewoodworks1484 awesome, thanks so much 🙏😊
Sweet board
Thanks!
Just saw this. Very well done. As others have said your instructions are very clear.
Thanks John!
Awesome Job.
Thanks!
I think it looks Great.
I thought the finished product looked great! I couldn’t really see the ‘imperfections’ ! Such a creative idea doing a mountain range! And the narration was informative!
It's great to see you upcycling the crib into smth useful! We also didn't want to throw away our baby's cot and decided to convert it into a child's sofa. It is quite easy to do with only basic tools and a small expense. You can see the result and other interesting DIY ideas on channel, Best DIY Russia
Sweet!
Finally someone else who doesn't have a thickness planer and made a cutting board! I thought I was alone. I made a small edge grain board as my first one and learned a lot along the way. Nice job.
Thanks! I will admit that I did break down and buy a planer recently but if nothing else I appreciate it more now.
Pretty sure this is the first "beginner" cutting board video that I have watched that doesn't use a planer and jointer haha. Thank you
