Do the x, y and z axis screws use a bronze nut or ball screws?

It would be interesting to know if there is any difference in the iron chemistry and how that compares to the iron used back in the day. I wonder if Bridgeport used a run of the mill (excuse the pun) ductile iron, grey iron or a meehanite iron.

I recently drug home an old Clausing Colchester 8000 series lathe and I have been underwhelmed by the general build quality. Fly cut sliding surfaces on the cross slide and compound, etc. Makes me wonder if there would similar shortcuts that you'd find if you really started digging into these machines, or if they really are the same.

I'd love one of those. Preferably with a Heidenhain DRO though. Why have they made the x & Y wait handles different than they used to be? Can they still have a slotting head fitted on the other end of the ram? So a new Bridgeport or a fully refurbished second hand one????

i have one of these Eisles and the 'z axis' lever (the one armed bandit arm) just spins around all of a sudden. has that happend to yours before? going to have to try and dismantle it and see why.

Mullet!

Mine is from 1969. I scraped the ways to 6 tens, the spindle TIR is under 4 tens, BUT: the final dimensions of a 20 inch long work milled for flatness with a 3 inch face mill was 4 thousands off. The machine flexes, regardless of how accurate you make it by scraping the ways, which by the way is hell of a job. Those who have already done it know what I am talking about. The table is overhanging too much in my opinion so I think the design is the problem. I still love the machine for the 2,5 k I paid for it, but for 18 k I wouldn't.
