I'm assuming that's a work truck but did you really sit the glass on the hood when you guys were installing it
just use a tape measure , tape and a marker
If your working on a old corvette with smc...If water gets into the smc and is able to freeze repeated cycles it will continue to seperate the smc and rot the internal fibers. You will have to cut out all of the seperated parts along the cracks and some you will reveal when you cut, it will look like rotten wood when exposed. This is a good video .
Hi Ben, hope you're doing amazing. You do a great job of explaining and seem to really know your stuff and I was wondering if I could get your help. So I've got a crashed mustang that I'm trying to rebuild in my garage in my free time. It needs a new roof skin, a quarter panel and a frame rail but I'm nervous about cutting into the body as I've never done this before and I'm wondering if I could pay you for a 15 minute phone call or facetime to just give me a little guidance. (couldn't find an email to reach out to)
So what kind of resin is SMC fiberglass resin? Polyester, epoxy or some other kind? And why traditional fiberglass resin (polyester) is not compatible with it?
Excellent. Could some one here suggest where I purchase a pdf of the diagrams as shown for a 2006 Impreza WRX? I have one that I know is not correct but it would help to know what the initial numbers should be. Thanks.
Hello. I have the same broken part on my motorcycle and I want to try to repair it. I would appreciate it if you could tell me what type of adhesive you use since it is not clear to me in the video or any specific product or brand that you have used, since I live in a place where there is not much variety of products and if I ask for an adhesive for thermoplastic he will not have any idea what I am talking about and he will sell me whatever he has regardless of whether it works for me. Thanks
Bro is a class whereby I learn how to use a tram gauge?
How do I change the name that shows up for "damage assessed by" in the PDF generation?
Epoxy works well on SMC repairs. If it is a small crack you can use a panel bonding adhesive and glue it back together as long as it isn't blown out and fractured badly. As far as how far to grind, with marine repair there is a scarf ratio which can be anywhere 7:1 to To 10:1. I use 1"wide for every 1/4" I ground out. I have fixed truck fenders, jetskis and marine outboard hoods like this.
Acryl butyl steyrene is coal tar base polyester is oil base resin a polyester shortage in 73.smc or metal use epoxy. Polyester to Polyester!
How much of mild detergent do you add to water
Excellent video. I need to repair a crack on my hardtop that goes onto my jeep that i just bought.
Here is a secret to save a ton of time on setting up the tram gauge for point to point measurements. Its easy get a long flat surface and lay down a long strip of tape, then use a tape measure and make a starting dot on the tape, then measure out the distance you need and make dots, then you can simply stand the tram gauge points on the tape , lining up the points you made for a quick setup, way better then holding the tape measure on the tram itself, you can make multiple points on the tape for reference and simply line up the tram gauge points and its 100% accurate and fast. Also this accounts for the tram height differences so you can have 1 long side and 1 short side and the measurement is on point. I use the same Mitchel repair software. No on one youtube does the datum lines explanation though, for measuring frame rail heights, they do side to side only etc.. the datum line to frame height is important, but no one ever goes over it, how to do it manually without a 50k auto laser machine.
Thank you!
Do yourshelf a favor and go to epoxy resin and get a buble roller
It does seem like a bit of a faff
You are good Ben. If possible to get into some sectioning estimate and manually enter would be great. Thanks again
Is there any other software better than this one you guys recommend ?
How do I fix the connection to my email server in Mitchell. I get an error when trying to email out an estimate from the system while in Team Viewer using it remotely from home
Thanks man 👍👍
👍
Where can i buy this spot welder
*Promo sm* 😈
will forever be in our hearts. RIP.😩
Thanks. It was helpful.
Glad to be making videos again .😊 Cant get enough masking materials and techniques videos. Prep work is half the work they say.
so all this complex process to just choose from an existing color formula? In my thinking this spectrophotometer process should be used to create a unique color blending formula - only then its usefull.
With many software systems (such as this one) the software does more than just select an existing colour. This system does have the ability to modify colours to create better matches. It is actually a very quick and simple process to use.
I can’t seem to find login data for VIN software embedded into the software…
Never hurts to spray a little Fluid Film on the bearing retainer nut to keep it looking newer and not like the titanic hull.
This was very informative, short and to the point. thanks for publishing.
Thank you
Nice informative video. You posted after a long time.
Thank you. I hope to have a few more completed and uploaded by the end of next week.
10:20 Thanks. Great explanation!
So what did you use under not to have resin stick on the parts you did not want to?😊
I used aluminum tape in the video; any form of aluminum can work well as the resin will not adhere. Thank you.
@@benh4086 thank you. Do you know if the fiberglass resin wil adhere on the polypropilene pp plastic?
Thank you, this was pretty helpful. Can I ask what model of spectrophotometer you used here?
This is the most current spectrophotometer from Akzo Nobel; the Automatchic Vision SKU 2002956 (I believe it may be manufactured by x-rite). Most automotive paint manufacturers utilize modern multi-angle spectrophotometers combined with their proprietary colour matching software for excellent results. Thank you for your comment.
@@benh4086 Thank you too. Another question if I may trouble you... The automatchic seems quite on the high side in terms of price. Do you have any idea of a more economical spectrophotometer that would do well with accuracy for matching colour on automotives?
Can you make on mig weld basics? Thanks
Thank you for the suggestion. I plan on making more videos when time allows.
I notice that you only masked the door. Is it not necessary to blend into adjacent panels?
Blending is always needed. This particular damage was rather small and repaired for demonstration purposes. In some instances, blending is possible within the panel (as was completed here). Otherwise blending adjacent panel(s) is required.
what are typical pre repair operations other than flex additive , tint color, corrosion protection, hazardous waste, car cover and pre and post repair scan. I feel we are not charging appropriately.
Hi Ronnie, there are a lot of non-included operations that need to be manually added. The P-pages are a great resource. Otherwise, additional training may be beneficial. The folks at Collision Hub offer excellent training for estimating: collisionhub.com/repair-u/
What's easier to repair on smc. A crack or to rebuild an edge. And on each which product should I use mat or cloth?
What's easier is really dependent on the specific damage and the skill of the technician. Cloth and mat each have their advantages and disadvantages. Generally, mat is great for smaller repairs.
When you smooth out the edge of applied body filler on panel how much pressure are you using and do you keep the spreader flat at that time or you curve it
Hi a 'm fiberglass technician u how any job thank u.
Great video. I can't believe this doesn't have more views. Over the years. I have watched a lot of how-to videos for various things in the automotive world. You cover all the bases and all the different scenarios. It was good how you showed what not to do by mixing too much hardener instead of just explaining verbally what it would do. This gives a very good visual of what to look for and avoid. Great work. Great video. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words.
What does it coat to have this software
You need to contact Mitchell International to discuss pricing
Very 👍 good... I'm assuming CCC1 is similar.... I'm new in the business so tryn to learn about the soft ware... ok thanks!
I made a mistake and bought a urethane based adhesive by 3M instead of an epoxy based adhesive to use on the hood of my Freightliner. Can I still use the Urethane based adhesive if I go over it with some SMC fiberglass resin and matting?
Hi Gary, Make sure you identify the material that the hood is constructed of (quite likely it’s Fibreglass or SMC; however, it could be another composite). Then check your repair material to see if it’s compatible. if it is not compatible, then purchase the correct product. It is usually best to avoid mixing products during the repair process. If you have questions about specific products, I would suggest contacting the manufacturer (in this case, 3M).
Where can I find Vehicle specific measurements like the ones you used to demonstrate?
You need to purchase them. The ones in the video are from Mitchell TechAdvisor. You can also use AllData or the OEM's pay site.
@@benh4086 Thank you!
Amazing dude. I need to do some SMC repair on my Fiero, and this really cleared some things up. My dad used to do autobody years ago, but he likes to take shortcuts or put his own twist on things, which has backfired on me a few times haha. So now that I know what's up, I'll be able to tackle it soon.
By far the most helpful and informational fiber glass video I’ve found while trying to learn how to make my own car parts
Thank you for the kind words. I hope you have success with your own projects.
Can you do a video on spraying primer or paint? Thanks.
Thanks for the suggestion. I would like to create more videos when time permits including more related to the painting process.
How do you commit the estimate or how do you add supplement items?.
