N&W 611 On The Buckingham Branch
Designed by Norfolk & Western engineers and built in the Norfolk & Western Roanoke shops, the 611 was specially balanced to minimize rail damage at high speeds. No. 611, eleventh of fourteen constructed and the last survivor, was retired from service and donated to the Roanoke Transportation Museum in 1959.
Founded in 1988, the Buckingham Branch Railroad (BB) is a family-owned, short-line railroad in Virginia that delivers and receives freight cars from CSXT, Norfolk Southern, and the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad.

Entering the age of modern steam in 1916, the EBT received its first of three large Mikados. Unlike the previous three smaller locomotives, #16 came with superheaters, piston valves, and Southern valve gear. One story mentions #16 pulled 60 empty hoppers from Mt. Union to Rockhill in one train, literally clearing out the yard. #16 underwent an overhaul in 1955 and made only a handful of trips i...

A quick trip north brings us to the Everett Railroad to ride behind 11. Number 11 was built in 1920 by Alco for Cuba, but was never delivered. Instead, it was acquired by the Narragansett Pier Railroad, for whom it served until 1938. It also helped the Bath & Hammondsport and Rail City, before being acquired by Middletown and New Jersey in 1982. Get Tickets Now! : everettrailroad.com/

Western Maryland 1309 Getting Pulled By 501
Gotta love the steamers that still run on coal. I hate how they're converting a lot of engines to gas.
@@TheAustinSubRailfan oil conversions is the only way to sustain modern day steam operations. Most if not all steam locomotives will probably be oil by 2030
Now this is how you load coal into a steam locomotive bunker or tender. if you really cool if Strasburg had one of these for its locomotives same the Fort Wayne historical Society for 765
Should have borrowed a CSX ES44AC for the stress test. At over 120,000 lbs dynamic braking force (vs 60,000 lbs for the SD40), it would have worked the 1309 real hard.
@@markantony3875 when u find a way to let csx let us lease a es44ac just to do this lmk

The best part is that she still had more in her.
Is 1309 still gonna keep 1361's whistle after they're done restoring steam engine 1361 or will they be putting it back on 1361 n 1309 will get it's own whistle?
1309 currently has 2 of its own whistles that being a N&W hooter and a Sothern Longbell 3 chime. 1361's whistle was put on 1309 for a special fundraiser for 1361's restoration.

They might have a secret steam locomotive lol jk but it’s gonna be something
I have heard rumors from my friends at work that let me know it will be a good home for it. I don't want to tell their plans just so they can announce it or keep it private if they're going to.
@@haydenharman2351 ok
Mark maybe
as much as i love steam locomotives, i cant believe they made it pull against the dynamic brakes on the diesel locomotive - im in california, i just had to replace the engine in my piece of shit car to pass smog, just so i could obtain a tag - it cost me $1200, im currently laid off and broke. just like you cant smoke in a restaurant anymore, because you cant contain the smoke to one area, neither can they - so what the f ck ? if they can get rid of newsum i dont care if they run it everyday - as a matter of fact id like to convert my pick up to wood fired steam -

No. I have no idea what that was.

@@colapone1895 Thanks
add a second sd40
how?
@@haydenharman2351 ?? Couple it to the first SD40 in MU operation. That would have given you 120,000 lbs dynamic brake force. The 1309 puts out a maximum of 79,773 lbs tractive effort, so two SD40s would have been a stress test right down to stalling the 1309.

Awesome video! Can't wait to hear that whistle on its "proper" engine! In the meantime, and although I could not experience this trip in person, I will definitely turn out to support any future fundraisers at WMSR or elsewhere, where 1361's whistle may put in an appearance. Also, what with the Pennsylvania Railroad's well-known distain for assigning consecutive numbers to entire classes of power, it's kind of cool to imagine an alternate universe where the Pennsy rostered a 2-6-6-2 numbered 1309. Although, that could be another fundraiser idea, to have not only 1361's whistle on 1309 or another preserved steamer, but also maybe to re-letter an engine or affix 1361's keystone numberplate to the smokebox for a fundraiser trip or photo charter.
Glad you enjoyed! It would definitely be interesting to see 09 in PRR paint.
That would be cool. I have been wanting to get down to Cumberland ever since 1309 went into service, but I'd stop everything and get tickets in a heartbeat if 1309 was lettered Pennsy or else was utilized for another 1361 fundraiser.
We will have to see if there will be another 1361 fundraiser with 1309.
I like trains.
Wow, 1309 really knocked the socks off of that sd-40. Nice video.
She sure is strong. Glad you enjoyed!
1309 was built for the Chesapeake and Ohio she's not a Western Maryland it just went to the Western Maryland scenic railroad a different railroad the Western Maryland railroad has 2 steam engines surviving a 4-6-2 and a shay all the others are not Western Maryland

This has to be the best C&O 1309 photo charter. She rocks that livery
I agree to disagree.
Figures, that is her original paint scheme
I've seen this locomotive in person at the B&O many times and even as a small child I always thought it was sad to see beautiful steam engines just wasting away. I'm glad to see it made it back out on the rails.
You will have to come see her running in person now. Glad you enjoyed.
The valve is out
Which valve?
The sounds of a steam engine are so musical, to think this probably where the stylistic rhythm of "railroad" music came from! As well as a lot of classic American folk music!
Trains and specifically steam locomotives make some of the best noises in the world in my opinion.
I don’t think Marilyn western had those
Hence why its in c&o paint for now.
@@haydenharman2351 ho ok
The WM actually did have an early class of 2-6-6-2 that 1309’s design is derived from. They were later rebuilt into 0-6-6-0 “Super Switchers”.
