Freak Lanier Spotted Bass - Lure Secret Exposed!
When was this tournament?
it was back in May. tail end of herring spawn.
I still own Sebile Magic Swimmer ACast 125SK I bought in 2008-2009, it has a Sebile wording on top of the middle section, how they would compare to the Berkley Magic Swimmer which was released this year?
Very cool! That is the bait you want for sure but the originals like the one you have are difficult to find. The original Sebile magic swimmers are one of the best herring swimbaits out there. I think the Sebiles are better than the Berkley magic swimmer due to quality and the swimming action. Don’t get me wrong though the new Berkley magic swimmer catches fish as well and has some great colors. What color Sebile do you have?
@@campetro10 I have to find the original package on my attic to say exact color name. But it looks silverish/shiner with a chartreuse on the tail part. Now I recall exactly, I bought this lure right after Todd Faircloth won Elite Series tournament in 2008. Never caught a fish on it, it looks like new, I think I used it once. I also had soft plastic Magic Swimmers, but sold them on EBay. At that time, I thought I could catch/slam spots better on Vision 110. Now the jerkbaits are not working that well for me. Do you think spots in general faster reaction fish compare to LMB, the spots tend to chase very fast moving baits and largemouth tend to be slower reaction, lazier fish?
@@WarEagleTheBest that sounds like a fantastic color. you should hold on to that bait and throw it for sure! it will get bit. i agree with you there, i think a lot of fish are getting conditioned to the jerkbait more and more. it worked better for me 4 or 5 years ago. i definitely think both spotted bass and largemouths will react to a bait but the spots are way faster and thats why 9/10 times you catch a spotted bass on the faster reaction baits. they beat the largemouth to the bait if they are mixed together. generally though largemouth are more of the lazier bass
Nice content! Will subscribe! What is your go to Magdraft size? And have you tried the new Zaldain’s B.A.S.S. mafia swimbait and Cull ShadCan you compare all three?
Thank you! I appreciate the support. I like the 6” for spotted bass lakes and tournament fishing. I prefer the 8” on largemouth lakes where I’m fun fishing for a big fish. I have tried both and imo the magdraft is head and shoulders better than both of those options. However, I have caught fish on all of them. I think the magdraft swims the best though for what I am looking for in a soft body swimbait.
Had a Bassmaster event there last spring. Very cool place
@@applejuice-3341 it’s a cool fishery. How did you do?
@@campetro10 got a limit both days but the size was not great. We got there before the prespawn got good and all the fish were just loaded up in the ditches. Dude who won just scoped them using a glide bait in the ditches.pretty neat

My 12 year old son is fishing a middle school tournament at Lanier in Feb 2025. I am the captain for him & his buddy. Never been on Lanier. We are putting in at Laurel Park. Any tips on techniques / locations for a 12 year old to catch’em?
Very cool! February is a fun time on lanier. It will be winter time patterns maybe early pre spawn. Laurel is way up the river but I would head down bellow browns bridge if you want a chance to win. I have a number of winter time videos up on my channel. I would check those out for lures and techniques!
@@campetro10 thank you sir!
@@demboyzfishin1389 thanks for watching and good luck with the tournament! Let me know if you have any additional questions as you watch the videos.
@@campetro10 any suggestions on ramps below Browns Bridge to put in when I come down to practice?
@@demboyzfishin1389 depends on what side of the lake you are on but I would say vans tavern or Charleston park. They are both central lake so you could go up or down for practice.
On the casting rods (I have the 781C), the rear cork behind the trigger is too short, the heel of my palm is hanging over the edge of the cork while casting, and I don’t even have big hands. Not sure who these are designed for. And, I was told the 781C would have some flex in the middle, but it’s a broomstick just like the others. Insanely light yes, but skimping on the cork just like many fly rod handle grips are getting to be.
Sick swimbaits bro....
Nicely done. I appreciate the sharing of info. I wish more people did that!
How deep were you fishing ?
25 feet and shallower for the most part.
I've got two NRX+. One spinning and one casting. Both are extra fast action I purchased for sensitivity and bottom contact. I've been disappointed with the sensitivity of both. My $250 expride blows the NRX out of the water. The only reason I purchased these is all the hype around sensitivity, and I can't feel jack. The part I don't understand is they're apparently made like the expride but I can feel everything with the expride. I just don't understand why everyone says the NRX is the most sensitive rod.
Is it: Megabass Magdraft Mag Draft SP-C Ghost Shad Solid Swimbait Paddle Tail White?
@@BeagleFerretTime yes pretty close! Pearl white is the way to go. Catches some giants!
That same cove you caught the third fish in I always have luck. You are the only person Ive ever seen in this area of the Lake on youtube. If Im right it looks like the cove after you pass the beach a bald ridge campground. I hope Im not wrong. I only hvae been there in the summer when the trees are full bloom. I just recognized that yellow boat with the cover.
@@Zanehoward88 yep you are correct! All of the creeks are fantastic in the spring but that pocket happened to produce that day. It’s a good one!
@@campetro10 we camp there a month out of every summer but I’m going to try to get up there in the spring this year. I usually fish around home in Loganville in the spring but I want to hit Lanier hard next spring. Is the fall bite good there too.? I’ve only fished it in the summer.
@@Zanehoward88 very nice! It’s a fun place to fish year round but spring is wild. Yes, the fall can be a great time as well. The NPFL came to lanier last fall and had solid weights. It can be tough but still plenty of fish and big ones.
Great info Cameron. I’m headed to Hartwell for the first time this October and plan to use what you have shared to have a great time on the water.
@@danmcmanigal1978 fantastic! Hope it helps for sure! Let me know how you do. I love Hartwell it’s a fun lake. October should be a great time to fish.
Pretty slick casting bud.
Hey Cameron I've heard from a lot of people that those rod's are not very well balanced. Tell me your thoughts. Ps Cameron there is 50 lb stripped bass in lake Lanier they eat those big gizzard shad And I didn't believe it until I saw the videos on guys catching them.
It entirely depends on the model that you get. For the 852 spinning rod it is perfectly balanced the 872 is definitely tip heavy. Wow those are huge fish! There are some monster fish in lanier. It’s a fun lake
Not the most expensive by far. Also not the baddest rods. The rods aren’t bad at all. They just ain’t the baddest as you claimed.
man for that price point they could have put the hook keeper in the front ...
I got a bunch of Googan contenders at a show for 10 bucks apiece. Hartwell bass like em.
Good to know. Do they swim well? I have never tried them
Love flipping the neko around docks
Awesome video what is the local store call selling swim bait?
Thank you! It’s Hammonds Fishing. Those swimbaits are tough to get though. They sell out quickly.
NRX+ are such sweet rod. I just loved mine so much. I won't let anyone use it beside myself.
Can't catch anything at lake lanier where should I look for to catch a bass and what bait any advice for a new fisherman at lake lanier just a got a seadoo fishpro
right now a lot of fish are on points and humps. if you fish these areas with a topwater or swimbait you will get bit. there are a ton of fish especially on the points. focus on 15-25 ft. of water
@campetro10 thank you so much I've been going often but no bites or anything
Thanks for tip!!!
Use a screw lock too wacky rig your bait.
Great idea!
What is your favorite lure/bait to throw at this time of the year
On lanier hands down a topwater lure. Nothing like a school of spotted bass coming up and destroying a topwater lure. I like a lucky graft gunfish, a super spook, or vixen in chrome or natural herring colors.
Do you normally fish shallow waters or deep waters on Lanier? And what type of top waters do you catch the most on? Whopper ploppers, chatter bait, jitterbugs, etc
@@philipbruce2161 depends on time of year and the conditions but mostly deep. i fish both deep and shallow though. i would say walking baits or whopper plopper
Where are they
During the spawn the fish will move up in shallower pockets on rock and under docks.
Best warranty, I replaced a GLX from reckless breakage. It got smashed, by my stupid brother in the car. They still replaced it, I also replaced a Shimano Cumara. Gloomis rods are still the best. I only buy rods with ridiculous warranties unless it's like a Ugly stick. For river smallie bass, I will be using a Ugly stick spinning rod and a shallow crank, this is my go to. I only use sensitive graphite for slow presentations, where feel is important like jigs or worm, so GLX. For baitcaster cranking rods, I have a Lucky Craft JDM rod and a Kistler. I have a Shimano Poison swimbait rod, it's big and heavy, It went on sale I think at TW. It's close enough to a Megabass. If you wanted me to jig fish with a Ugly Stick, I would quit. Once you use a G Loomis for Jigs, you are a damn snob for life. I own about half a dozen of those rods. I got too much bass gear right now, too many mid range combos. I should get rid of like 3 bass combos maybe I could use some inshore combos. For reels I have mainly Shimano, not Daiwas. I do have some Abu Garcia and some Quantums, the Shimano are just better. Abu seem to last forever, so them or Shimano I would do only. I have one Shimano baitcaster from like 1984, a bantum Magnumlite, It still works absolutely fine It's 40 years old. My Dad has Abus that are older than me, so do his friends. His boat is older than you. The other reels just seem to fall apart just sitting there over time, Quantum and Daiwa. I look for long term investments I can still use if I am like 80, It's better to spend a lot on only a few reels, instead a bunch of 100$ reels, those won't last you forever. 200-300$ should last forever, unless it's a Quantum then I don't know. I bought a couple exo baitcasters, we will see how those hold up, but that was a 2 for 1 thing, one is a 300 size for Muskie. Those should be alright, I don't fish a lot of muskie or swimbaits.
Love the info! Agree with you all the way. Shimano and gloomis all the way for bottom contact and finesse baits. You get what you pay for. If you spend a little more on the front and take care of them they will last forever.
I love fishing high end,”snob rods”. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and enjoyment. Ill stick with my NRXs and Conquests.
I hope this is not breaking a fisherman’s code, but I would like to make a request. I just started fishing within the last year and recently purchased a used fishfinder with sides scan. I have not been able to find any brush piles. I was wondering if you would give me a waypoint that I could go to and use as an example of what to look for. I fish the south end of the lake. Thank you in advance
no problem! you dont get anything without asking. i would assume this is on lake lanier??
@@campetro10 yes sir. Thanks for responding. I primarily fish the south end of the lake.
@@kirkoliver1002 I’ll take a look next time I am at my unit next week but if you go out to the main lake or any creek and graph a point or hump from 15-25ft deep you will find brush. It is literally everywhere on the lake. It’s tougher to see on sidescan as you are looking for the shadow created by the brush but it’s all over the place.

16 pounds, not bad. You wouldn't want to be in my boots. $15,000 dollars of electronics and only catching one bass per last four tournaments. I feel like selling all my equipment and boat and finding a new hobby.
fishing can be so rewarding and so humbling at times. i honestly just had that thought the other week at clarks hill only catching 11 lbs! bigger picture though i had a blast with a friend, got to enjoy the outdoors and day on the water, see wildlife, and got to fish so all in all not bad. trust me ive been in your shoes many times though wondering why i spend money on these fish.
$650 for a rod ? you dont need a sponsorship , you need a lobotomy bruv
I absolutely love going back in a pocket and finding 2 or 3 on a bed. And with Lanier clear water, so much fun. Probably my fav bait past 2 yrs is a small TRD bugz. They hate that thing popping around the bed. lol
Hey, you had mentioned in one of your earlier videos you were going to release an in-depth swimbait video. Are you still planning on releasing the video going over from deep to shallow with the different swimbaits, retrieves and what you look for?
yes i definitely can do that. is there a specific swimbait or type of swimbait you want to see? i posted the multi-jointed swimbait video going over most of those specific details.
What conditions you look for to fish certain glides and where you are fishing them. You had mentioned the Tater Hog and 316 Glides in past videos. When you throw those over bigger soft swimbaits? What conditions are you looking for to throw those glides, water visibility, wind, how fish are they setting up on sonar? Suspended, near bottom, relating to structure? Are you setting those fish up with different lures before throwing the bigger glides?
Also film your retrieves you use with the different glides. Anything you do differently with followers? Just some ideas, appreciate it.
Just your overall approach, what conditions you look for and when to go shallow and deep. I realize some of that will be seasonal.
great ideas. yes i can compile those details. will be a very in depth video so give me some time
gotta love hindsight! Terrific recap, Cameron!
Thanks! Always something to learn and take away to get better

If you could pick up BKK as a sponsor.. hooks are great. Berkley does the most with Herring styles & colors, they would have to be the most beneficial for us savanna river guys. GLoomis is amazing but another killer company is Dobyns and you would probably find some open ears at Duckett because they chase alot of Herring styles pretty dang hard! Keep grinding man, great stuff that is really local 🧃
