How to care for a Monstera

This is part 1 of my mini series on plant care for a specific type of plant. Monsteras are known for their huge size and their affordability. They are a great beginner plant, as they grow fast and get large quickly with little care. Comment below for any question or suggestions that you believe would benefit everyone here including myself. 5 Essentials when starting your plant journey
This is CRAZY. Using electricity to grow them when u could just garden OUTSIDE, also the bugs must be crazy unless u only grow hydroponically and bottle feed. Do your thing tho bro but i don't get it for these plants 🤷🏾♂️👊🏽
@@MaxPainMSF oh outside is the move for sure. I have a garden outside as well not as much as I keep in here. I live on the east cost with seasonal changes so after late September early October it’s a wrap weather wise for most of my outdoor garden. Most of the plants I keep in here are philodendrons and they prefer a dry soil so no major bug issues however fungus gnats, mealybugs, and thrips are the ones that are hard to avoid. Still no bug issues that will come out the room you know. Do you have a garden? If so what you keep?
@@growingwithshawn I do, 420 plants so I understand about the fungus gnats etc. I enjoy your content thi bro it's just my power bill is high but your not using as much lighting as me, it was more the bug issues I was worried you would have. Have you tried bottom watering?? I'm sure you know what your doing. 🙏🏾👊🏽🌱
@@MaxPainMSF I’ve tried bottom watering it’s just my mind be so busy that I’ve forgotten a couple of plants in the tray. I really would like to have a sink in here. I’m so clumsy with water though. This month though was the highest my light bill has ever been. Usually it runs me between 2-300 and that’s really pushing it. This month it was 450. I don’t know if it’s because the air or what but that was crazy. When they legalized it here and hate my next goal
Don't mean to fill up your box with comments. But would like to add this 🔮 Moved in this home 2 yrs ago April. First year was hell. I ran humidifiers and dehumidifier, used reverse osmosis water from dehumidifier to water plants, fans, grow lights and had growing pain issues. Now, hallelujah 🙌🏾 Jesus take the wheel. I mean, He took it. The dehumidifier stopped working after a yr. Started with tap water stored. No longer use humidifiers, dehumidifier, pebble trays, nada. Hallelujah 🎉🤔only thing i can figure out is with the quantity of plants, the whole plant room is a greenhouse. 🪄🔮
@@serenitygardenaviary man please continue to fill up the comments lol. Seriously. This is how I learn. I don’t know it all and being here these couple of months have taught me some things. I stoped running my humidifiers in like Feb and they seem to be doing great. I still run the one in the inside of the miniature greenhouse but other than that. It’s doing great in its own. Jesus is definitely driving in the room. I’m glad because it gets messy and tiresome filling it up. Oh you ran the whole 9 yards. Your window though.. is everything.
💡🔦🕯wondering how a few Epipremnum Aureum would look hanging from top of storage rack. Plant curtain to naturally conceal supplies. Otherwise, plant room supply closet works for me.🤗🥰🧐🥳👨🏾🌾
Amazing greenhouse 🎉❤🥰 Such a beauty would have saved a few plants back in the beginning. 🔨😁😊🤗 If i had a hammer, i'd hammer in the morning 🎶🎵🎶Peter Paul & María 1963 All over this land 🎉
kinda jelous of all the shelving you have. I am setting my plants on fishtanks bc thats where the light is lol
@@NamelessNancy1312 too funny. What’s in your collection?
So pretty!
@@familyminahan3343 thank you
Nice catch! Great growth 🎉
@@serenitygardenaviary thanks man
Hey. New to your channel and subscribed. I love the care and excitement you have for your collection. You got some beauties.
Thanks for being here and subscribing. I really do love this journey. I’m learning but still enjoying.
What kind of plant is it, Shawn? Philodendron of some kind? It would look beautiful growing up a moss pole, and the leaves would get even bigger!!
Lovely collection! Thanks for sharing!
@@veganmagick7251 thanks for taking the time to check it out. Hopefully something stood out. Any questions ask away. Have a great day.
@growingwithshawn you're welcome and thanks! I'm newly on my house plant journey. I started with carnivorous plants and then got some tropicals and just went down the rabbit hole 😂
yeeee love the intro!
Thanks for noticing. I’m like this intro needed a little work. Had fun with it.
Shawn is the best. Im proud of you. I like that white princess.
@@dekykurnianto9567 thank you so much for your kind words. I’m actually putting the white princess on a moss pole to really push the leaves out faster and bigger. Thanks for coming by. Have a great evening.
Beautiful plants
Thank you for watching 💚
So I tell myself I'm not gonna buy more plants and then you plant tease with this wonderful collection. Shame on you!
@@DanielPybus-cz7nj 😂 too funny. The more the better. I say the same thing every week then when I’m out and about I just magically fine something. I’m limiting myself to 1 plant a month if I just have to have one. A lot of the times there are small 6-10 bucks unless something really stands out.
Haha it was definitely an issue. That cabinet just has a mind of its own. Well more like the user needs to understand the timer so I can get some consistency. I had the grow like like 7 inches from plant and it’s entirely to bright for that I did give it a great watering though after to editing. I’m thinking of a moss pole since the two leaves being gone now gives me a flat back what you think?
🤔looks pretty dry. Grow light taking the blame for drought conditions 🤭😇🥰
Your collection is beautiful! 💚 I'm in the process of expanding my collection, unfortunately I don't have much money for new plant species either, but I'm trying to expand my existing plant collection with propagation.
@@isa-le5fk that’s one of the best ways to do it. Nothing like creating new plants. Plus it helps your other plants out so it’s a win win. What’s your favorite species?
El Choco needs indirect light. Bright light will kill this plant. Need a self watering pot and NEVER let dry out more than halfway. I have mine planted in 3 parts aroid mix 1 part coco coir and 1/2 part soil. My leaves 2 and 3 feet size. It’s on a moss pole with P. Micans and Verrucosums. It’s a chocolate dream. This is a suggestion. I know you can do it. It’s in your heart. 🙏🏾You have a Gorgeous plant room. Lots of plants and plant things🪴 🪴Happy Planting🌿
You are the best! Let me start off with that. Thank you so much. I just took it out the cabinet. This is probably what took my Verrucosum out too. I’ll order a self watering pot and transition it asap to the new pot. Any suggestions and all advice is always appreciated. Thank you have a great one.
Nice collection my friend 🥰 The philodendron El Choco is next on my wish list lol. Thanks for the info on the Philodendron royal queen. I didn’t realize it gets darker with lower light. I have one myself and I got it because I saw how dark the leaves could get. Mine is just a starter plant but maybe I should pull it back from my grow light a bit. Wish me luck!
Thank you. I tell you I’m working hard on that one. This is my second one and I believe I have it down this time. It’s always a learning experience. So beautiful though.
You don’t need luck you got this. Keep me updated please.
@@growingwithshawn Haha thanks! I’ll try my best to remember lol. 😊
So pretty. I’m hoping mine is like this when it grows up. ❤
@@deidrajimi9816 just give it light. That’s key. It loves it. Also I get rid of yellow leaves real fast if any occurs.
💚
Great video, Brother. 🎉❤ Question: if the plant grows like a weed in the greenhouse, why not take it out? Scindapsus Exotica, Silver Satin, Pothos Pictus Argyraeus and Jade can live happily in water or even wet feet (pot with water at bottom) These four Scindapsus I can testify on behalf, mostly are in water vases no leca, no perlite, just tap water with plant food periodically. 🦺job well done 📺 👀
Great video 🪴🪴🪴

Beautiful marble Queen! Looks like some snow Queen mixed in 🤔 ❤🤩👍🏽
I agree and a Manjula as well on the end. Big boxes sale everything in one 🫣😃
@growingwithshawn still have to get manjula! ✨️
@@serenitygardenaviary why you holding off. Are you waiting for them to be available locally?
@@growingwithshawn yes, not a biggie. Just got the pearls and Jade because Ace Hardware had them in 4". Got four to make two plants. When Ace or Wegmans has Manjula, then I will also.🎉🎊
@@serenitygardenaviary oh your lucky!! I haven’t been able to grab a pearls and jade in years. I have a n joy and it’s barely holding on. I had it in the back corner and I’m not her favorite right now. Can’t wait to see your pearls and jades though
Looks like a very healthy TC. Nice !
Your plants look great. Thanks for sharing with us. What are the grow lights with the arms? I need something like that to cover more area. Where do you get the clear pots?
Thank you for being here. I purchased them from Amazon. Clear nursery pots. Have a great day!

You're so welcome! Glad it reached you. Have a great day.
Amazing!!!
Incredible! Absolutely beautiful!!!!
Thank you so much!
ive been getting into Thai constellation monsteras latley. I got some to grow out and got cool trellis for them, im using aquarium cholla wood. Figured it be easy to ge them to grow up the cholla wood for stability and use them for propigation in the future.
I’ve never heard of the cholla wood. Definitely about to check it out next. That’s what I want for my monstera in the back a trellis just don’t want to deal with plant or moss on those heavy guys.
Some fire plants, an albo monstera would look good in your mix, or a ruby variegated ficus elastica. Another good suggestion for the mix which is kind of bigger would be the shangri la philodendron, I think you’d like it as much as I like your indoor garden!
Thanks for the suggestions I’m going to look it up now. I’ve never heard of that philodendron definitely has my interest. When the prices of the albo drops a little more I’m going to snag one. Locally, hopefully.
@@growingwithshawn it might be an odd recommendation but I went to a small reptile expo and found my albo for 60$, I ended up going out after watching and picked up a philodendron pedatum. I definitely look forward to seeing your collection grow.
Guttation which is the water at the ends of plant leaves. This is from high humidity in the room not to much water.
Thank you for taking the time to stop by and give me some clarification. This is why we are here. Have an amazing day!
Is than an Imperial Green Philodendron behind you? Beautiful 😍 ❤
The big one is a moonlight. You are right for the imperial green. It’s a hybrid. I don’t know what the other mix is but that’s the 1st part.
Can't go wrong with a nice trailing plant.🌿
You got that right!

Your monstera looks nice & healthy
Thank you.
Great video! By Monstera...Adansonii and Ginny 🎉 Killed two Deliciosas, so pass me on the Giant. Twice a month watering is fine for east or north facing windows. South facing requires more, in my area.
Thanks for sharing that knowledge with us. I’m terrible with directions. I dont know why I just don’t pull the compass out. Hope your Sunday is going well.
Don't every give up on plants you love. Keep at it because in the end they will reward you. I wasted so much money on Cebu Blues, but I could not give up on them. I lost one Thai, two deliciosas, one of the other monsteras they sell in the stores that they don't tell people are not deliciosas (forgot the name), one mini monstera (ginny), but I kept at it and now the plants are doing better. There is a learning curve. You are going to lose a lot of plants until you figure out even the pots you should use (clear for smaller plants, terracotta for cuttings). When it comes to monsteras, remember a good fluffy aroid mix and a good pot that drains well as they do not like to be wet. They give you signs if someting is wrong, like a yellowing leaf. Thai Constellation was the hardest plant I ever had to deal with but now I have a nice one as I didn't make the mistake I did with the first one. Keep at it! It's kind of fun to waste money sometimes (NOT!).
@@hennesseyme9112 thank you so much for sharing all your information with us. Truly appreciate it. See this is what it’s all about. I’m learning from you and I know plenty of people here who are taking this knowledge and looking to apply it.
@@growingwithshawn Uhm coming from the person that look like he is running a beauty pageant for plants! You are welcome. The biggest lesson is, you are going to lose plants, but if you really love them you should keep trying. There are plants I won't purchase again because I may not like them as much as others. I will never purchase a Snow Queen Pothos again because I have lost a couple, the brown and I don't need to have one.
I love monsteras
