When I hit convert it says "Error loading NYC.png" it doesnt work.
There is just not appearing. There is no errors, not even warnings are there. I checked my whole computer and the bloody .mdl file doesn not appear.

Half Life 3 in 2014 will have the "realistic Alyx" model from the HL2 mod
This was nothing big, just a test I did in a day. But it was meant to push Xengine (BMS's source fork) as far as it could go with static props and HD textures. I think it looks pretty nice considering, again, this is Source, and these assets were originally made for Unreal. Certainly leaves room for improvement with that last fact in mind.
I'm curious that what kind of improvement (specific techniques) could be made on Source to achieve more "realness" here?
@@AnqurVanillapy There's quite a few things to improve on the code side, but it's all down to the shading and the lighting. BMS has good dynamic lighting, but the indirect (bounce) lighting is where it falls a bit short compared to newer titles. The lights also lack contact shadows that make those really fine details show up in the shadows. Shadow radius is a thing, but soft shadows present as very grainy and it needs to be used with care (or at very high resolutions lol) There's no proper ambient occlusion on anything so some stuff looks a bit cut out and tacked on. Lights also only exist as point lights. That means they just show up as a spherical shape in specular reflections, even though they're actually representing tubes. In terms of shading, there's a lot that could be done. PBR is being approximated in this video, but it's not real PBR, although it's pretty damn good. The main thing that's missing is proper roughness on cubemaps (per pixel blurring), and parallax correction on cubemaps (adds depth to the reflections so that they move with the camera instead of being totally static).

I have one material assigned to my model, but for optimization I want some faces not to be rendered by the engine. When I assign a material to which there is no path in QC, missing texture appears in the game. What material should I apply to these faces and what should be the path to this material?
Any additional material you add is going to have additional cost, not less, because each material is an additional drawcall, which is far heavier on performance than polycount. Your best bet is simply deleting those faces. If that's not an option, then you should probably just eat the cost of those faces. It's not really gonna be a huge issue anyway. Source can still render several hundreds of thousands of polys in one scene still. What would limit performance is having too many models, as Source doesn't instance these to the GPU. So in that case for mapping, it's best to cluster meshes that share materials.

Hi, i have been pretty struglling with the materials and etc. , not sure if you still reply to comments but basically i have done everything you told in the video and even did everything you said in others peoples comments. (Just to be clear i was following our tutorial on prop model creation. It is only 1 texture and im using hlmv as model viewer) I have: named the VMT after the material on my mesh in blender checked multiple times if the $cdmaterials folder matches where is the vmt double checkecd that the actual VMT is pointing to a VTF as well It still appears as a gooddamn purple cheesboard and it cant find the VMT Im kinda scared ill have to redo the entire model again ( Its saul goodmans "Worlds Greatest Layer" mug) Any help would be appreciated, thx

hey how would you feel about doing the other tf2 characters? like saxton hale, the administrator, miss pauling, etc? I think this was a cool project and I'm curious what the others would look like.
Probably not, some of the models I had problems getting it tracked properly because the meshes were just way too cartoonish for the solver and it'd be a much more manual job. And also just not where my focus is, I wanna get back to making tutorials and fun animations again.
