      These are terrible ideas! In the interview, Art Clokey said that people had a connection not just to Gumby but to the clay. But take the clay away and make Gumby 2D and where is that connection? In my last conversation with Joe Clokey, he said that he wanted to partner with a major company but still retain control of Gumby, much like his father wanted. Obviously, Joe's children and wife don't feel the same way. They seemed fairly eager to unload the Gumby franchise to Fox Entertainment. As Art might have said, "They don't respect Gumby. They don't know what Gumby is about," (quoting from the interview).

    We could do without your zebra ( or is it, more appropriately, an ass?) logo obscuring important parts of the image while the movie is playing. You present yourself as having some interest in the topic, why would you knowingly mess up the quality of something this important? Lots of well intentioned people nonetheless have their heads up their asses, is this you? Every part of the frame is important, it's all part of the details of the craft and the legacy of Clokey. If you had to do it you could shrink it to 1/8 size without any problems, or better yet place it in the black portion of the frame where it is harmless. Or are you one of those who will spit in the copyright punch so others can't drink it? I guess that's what you have to do if you don't actually own the copyrights. Have you ANY idea how disrespectful this is to the audience and to the memory and ideals of Clokey himself, or are you THAT clueless? I'm an artist and I don't think Clokey, an accomplished and skilled filmmaker, would be anything but disgusted with that classless stunt which degrades his work.

    I would love to learn more about his relationship with lakeside toys. Did he have design control over each product? Was he happy with the produced products? What caused the jump from lakeside to the jesco company, etc? Again, amazing video. I loved watching this.

    • @zebraradio1610
      @zebraradio1610 5 месяцев назад

      Thank you. Art did not specify which products he objected to or why Lakeside Toys was dropped. Art lost control of Gumby and Clokey Productions when he divorced Ruth in '66 (although he was still collecting royalties). As he said in the interview, "they were not respecting Gumby," meaning Ruth, who had control of Gumby and Pokey at the time, was allowing the toy company to attach Gumby's name and image to products Art didn't approve of. But I suspect the friction between the two went deeper than just control of Gumby. On tape, which I did not include in the interview video, Art criticized Ruth's "limited consciousness," referring to her myopic view of spirituality. I believe the real source of the friction with Art and Ruth (I have spoken to Ruth at least a half dozen times) centered on their religious differences with Art turning away from Lutheranism and Christianity and embracing Eastern Religions.

    • @silvertimemoments
      @silvertimemoments 5 месяцев назад

      @@zebraradio1610 that makes sense. Since D&G was Ruth’s “child” per-say and Gumby was Art’s, since they had different religious views, their views went into their creations which is why Gumby has much more of a “new age/zen” feel if you will. I hate that the relationship went the way it did, but I’m very grateful for the creativity of Mr.Clokey and his artistic creation of Gumby. Has brought me many years of joy since I was a young child and I still enjoy and collect Gumby items to this very day.

    Something that’s really beautiful about stop mo is that a lot of techniques have stayed the same. It’s both the most accessible form and the most expensive form of animation, but having accessibility through the Gumby puppet is HUGE. There’s such a passion behind stop mo production and it makes me really happy to hear people talk about it.

      What you say is true. Something else that makes stop motion animation so special is that it employs and brings together all of the arts and crafts. Sculpting, puppetry, design, performance, writing, photographic techniques such as lighting and composition, stage craft and audio design. As such, it is far more labor intensive than any other style of animation. But it is also much more satisfying in my view. Yes, it can be expensive, but it needn't be. One can animate found objects and brings those to life and give them personality. The possibilities are endless.
