if only I knew what this guy was trying to tell me...
I'm a beginner with two weeks of experience (and watching lots of anime/live action). This primer was pretty useful. As a pro-card player my basic intuition for this was good, so the first half of questions were quite easy, but the second half there's no way I can answer accurately in a few seconds and 5 seconds is the limit on Mahjong Soul. Too much time spent on just figuring out what my hand can/should be, so I can't pay attention to reading opponent discards or noticing how many tedashi vs tsumogiri they are doing. Hopefully learning these basic things doesn't take too long.
This video made me realize how little I understand of Mahjong. Super useful and informative, it solves a lot of the issues I've had with discarding. Thank you!
heyy, do you have a discord server?
Yup! Link is here: discord.gg/VrvX4Kmr7j
@Xanxust1 tysm, btw do you have a video teaching about how to use log to improve? i wanted to start checking my logs, but idk how to properly use it 😭 like why there are grey tiles idk 😭😭
How does one learn to count tile acceptance while playing?
Just boils down to practice and pattern recognition, you'll get the hang of it after a while
hi beginner here, I'd like to ask this question can you tell me why 4M and 3S are dangerous tile ? ... I don't get it, and what do you call redundant ? video at 4:36 thx
The longer the game goes on, the more likely it is for middle-ish tiles like 4m and 3s to deal into opponent's hands so they become more dangerous Tiles are redundant when keeping them in hand don't actually increase your tile acceptance (e.g. 356s, 3s is redundant because the shape can still accept 47s even without the 3s being there) Explained more in my previous vid: ruclips.net/video/yADMLkG9zuY/видео.html
@Xanxust1 ok thx you
3:23 If you discard 5s you can hope for suji trap tenpai on the 2.
mahjong has no benefit to the human soul
So helpful!!! Thank you!!
Is him risking to deal in for his current position at South 3 considered correct? Maybe I’m just a big chicken but I focus on not dealing in if my chances to get top 3 is looking high…
I think it's an okay push, he's over 20000 points away from last so he can afford to deal in mangan and still be ok, he's chasing 1st place with a score gap of less than 10000 so any mangan tsumo means he overtakes. Just unlucky
Hello Xanxust! I love your educational content. Can you make a video regarding when to push, when to fold, when to play quick hands, when to play big hands?
@@kotoriminami2560 hello, thanks for the support! I've been thinking of working on such a video actly, maybe once I'm off work and have some free time Thanks for the suggestion! I think it's a good video idea
what song is playing at 16:50 ?
ruclips.net/video/25ZBDh0_jyU/видео.html
34:07 Is it a good idea to discard the 7m and go for 7 pairs?
Don't want to commit to chiitoi too early, if your hand backfires the 89m block becomes very awkward. Chiitoi also gives up a lot of speed and tile acceptance in general, I didn't see this hand as a chiitoi hand
UPDATE: IM IN EXPERT 1 NOW, with the help of these tips, it really works, I’ll keep using this advice 😁😁
i am bad, so i would probably change every game, just get rid of both 9sou, it makes more slower hand, but also way more accepting tiles and likely higher scoring hands, also it will give you way more information of the game.
im watching this while halfway through adept 3, i'll update this comment when i rank up
Amazing video, we need more like this
Where in SG are there places to play riichi mahjong?
There's a SgRiichi website with instructions on how to join and play publicly hosted games!
@@Xanxust1 cool I’ll check it after exams
I would discard 2s here. I think the normal hand path is stronger than chiitoi, so 3s is out, and I'm not willing to give up on the opportunity to draw 7m into an amazing tenpai for pinfu iipeikou dora3, so 8m is out as well. I am, however, happy to cut 89m if we can immediately replace it with a ryanmen block without dropping shanten. Therefore, instead of max efficiency 6p, I'll cut 2s to give ourselves a good opportunity to draw a new ryanmen shape around 5667p.
I thought of the 8m, too, because if you did 6p and got into tenpai without drawing 7m, then your wait is not only bad but involves the dora. I might discard 6p out of greed though. I'll admit I didn't even think of telegraphed manzu honitsu. I should probably work on watching for that more.
I like cutting 7p or 3s, dama chiitoi on tenpai-- its haneman if we tsumo but slow For efficiency, going 5 block is fine. But the final wait is likely to be penchan 7m which sucks I think the decision kind of comes down to whether you want to tenpai faster at the cost of a bad final wait, or if you want to go back shanten to improve the wait.
3s, go big or go home
It‘s one of those situations, no matters what you do, you are going to be wrong 😅
The 8m reasoning def took me off guard. Def think that's an option I'm underutilizing in my play. Thanks for the video.
Even without analogue reasoning, 8m looks like a good discard. Our hand needs speed over value, and dropping 8m-9m increases chances of a good tenpai. But under time pressure, I'd probably cut 2s here for the broadest improvement chance. Chiitoi just seems too slow, so I am not really considering it, either.
wow! a very insightful video. I would have thought people would choose 6p for the efficiency and the haneman that 3 doras + iipeikou pinfu and riichi can bring if I hit it, but feng's reasoning makes sense as well and I would not have thought of that.
Would the WRC ruleset means we ignore red 5? Anyways, if it were me, I'd cut 6p as well. We're far behind 1st and I'd like the chance to draw another 7m. I think it's early enough to bet the other 7m is still in the wall even if kamicha is hoarding manzu tiles. Plus, with iipeikou guaranteed, we don't strictly have to riichi if we ever get to tenpai
We usually play WRC ruleset with 3 aka 5
@@Xanxust1 ah I see then. Still would cut 6p for the reason above. Tho I might not riichi unless I draw another 7m myself.
Brother you should create a discord server sia, will join
Wah I've genuinely thought about doing this before but I don't trust myself to be able to manage one well after I create it Will keep thinking about it though
@@Xanxust1 just try and see how, don’t need to be well managed just an announcement channel for all ur new vids and a channel for resources, plus community channel for games and stuff will be good enough
@@Xanxust1 not like a million people are gonna join, even if not well maintained small discord vibe also better than nothing, try and see how, no pressure just hope to encourage u
Hmm that's true, I'll consider ba. Gonna start working soon and I heard the work life balance is quite bad, see how it goes and see if I'll have time to be more active on discord when I'm off work
After thinking about it for a while I think I should be able to manage it, gonna create one soon! Thanks for the idea
Really curious to see what naga thinks about this, maybe there's no correct answer for this and what matters is the reasoning behind the discard? At a glance I would probably cut penchan just cause the hand is minimum 3han 40fu and I don't like this ippeikou penchan shape as well. After thinking I would probably just cut 6p as well for early riichi and for tsumo to overtake kamicha
I also chose 8m but only because of the WWYD format. In a real game setting it's still very hard for me to realise when a situation calls for an analog decison, so I probably would have dropped 6p in practice. Good on you for at least realising it was a moment worth photoing!
Definitely 6p. The problem with analog reasoning is sometimes you overanalyze the situation. Math and statistical analysis are king.
Would disagree with you on this, the best players in the world know both the theory and when to apply the exceptions
Awesome Video, thanks for the shoutout~
Is it better to riichi here? My main ideas following the discards I was thinking about (6p or 3s, ultimately I decided 6p) were to dama, as both routes can dama on at least a mangan (IPK dora 3 or chiitoi dora 3) and both can maybe upgrade to hane with pinfu + tsumo/just tsumo. Plus, since we don’t have to worry about toimen busting, we can take the dama to garuntee the renchan.
Really not sure tbh. I'll prob dama if waiting on the 7m since I can't count on anyone discarding it if I riichi. If waiting on the pinzu or souzu suits then I think there is an argument both ways whether to riichi or dama (but I will probably dama and best case scenario would be to snipe kamicha's discards)
I also would have said 6p and rejected chiitoitsu. I didn't consider 8m and that shows I still have so much to learn. When I worked on WWYD problems with Uzaku's books, I noticed it was hard for me to find the answer of problems asking for me to go back a shanten.
When you say to chase riichi if you have at least 2 han and a good wait, does riichi counts towards those han? Or has it to be two han plus riichi?
2 han including riichi. But keep in mind that this is just a guideline
I had a game in bronze where this dumbass played one of each dragon to which another guy kept poning...man won big three dragons on a tsumo, but apparently only the guy who dealt the dragons to him had to pay. But rare to see this happen in a jade room...those uradora are scary!
Two of the most mentally damaging games together in one video? Would like to see more.
To add to others: great video, do some more please! Love the relaxed & insightful commentary!
Great job! I'd actually pay a tutor to talk me through a hanchan live like this.
That was fun to watch!
This was great! Hearing you talk someone through a live game was super valuable!
MORE! Would love to this as a series where you help him get out of Adept and he coaches you too to break 1800 in chess
I really like the video. I definitely would like to see more videos of you coaching people. Do you plan to continue coaching him? I'm also curious how did you two meet?
Side note: 1) as of the time this video is published, Jingyao's rating has increased to 2580, and the new youngest chess Grandmaster in Singapore is Siddharth Jagadeesh 2) 06:00 in hindsight I should have asked Jingyao to chii the 68p and discard 1p instead
7:10 100% agree, so maybe people leave early after getting dunked on in east 1 or 2, but comebacks happen easily though
So if I got the second half right, it boils down to "if your hand isn't shaping up by the mid-All Last or so and you're in a comfy position score-wise, you can go kingmaking instead of fending for yourself" xD
1:36 Didn't know this about ryanmen waits but now that you've mentioned it it seems obvious now, having seen that pattern consistently in my games. Question though - does a Grade B/C ryanmen become stronger than a Grade A ryanmen if there are more wait tiles discarded/called by other players for the Grade A?
Yes, if there are only 5 outs or below for the Grade A ryanmen
This tanki thing seems wrong? In this case you have tenpai for a single time wait, but one away from a double sided (though not ideal) improved wait. And you're potentially waiting on 8 tiles to improve it. That is, you're waiting on 9 tiles, where one of them lets you win straight up. That is, if everything is ideal, you'd wait on 3 + 3* (8) + 4 = 31 actual tiles to improve/win your hand. Defintely agree with that 4 tiles in a row is super strong, or any tiles that are near each other are super strong, and can improve waits significantly... But waiting on a pair if you're doing sequences is imo not a bad thing; as long as you don't riichi.
sorry which case are you referring to?
@@Xanxust1 At 1:50
Ah I see. The example at 1.50 is just to show the kind of wait that you generally want to avoid. The 2 cases after that are examples of how to avoid that
watching this like i ain’t in Novice 3🥲
