Arts Umbrella "Splash" 2022 preview - Pendulum Gallery in Vancouver Canada - Vintage C mount lens
The artworks are up for auction to benefit Arts Umbrella's youth art education programs.
The footage was made with an old Pansonic GH2 using Extended Tele mode to more closely replicate the size of the format that the lens was designed for. The lens is a 1960's era Schneider Kreuznach 10mm f1.8 T2.0 Cinegon that was made for use on 16mm cine cameras.
With that in mind, I thought a film emulation of sorts was in order.

Vintage lens test - "25mm f1.4 Carl Zeiss Biotar" on a Fuji XPro2 camera (vintage C mount lens)

I was lucky enough to spend a few hours in my friend Linda Arkelian's dance class at the Woodwards Campus of Simon Fraser University. It gave me a chance to use a lens and camera combo that are separated by about 90 years. The lens is the 25mm f1.4 Biotar, made by Carl Zeiss. This optical formula went on the be used in later Zeiss lenses, the 58mm and 75mm Biotar as well as the Soviet era Helio...

    • @nuovofresco
      @nuovofresco 10 месяцев назад

      With cameras of this age, I generally use an external meter because the old cameras often had a battery that contained mercury. The metering systems relied on constant voltage rather than constant current; mercury batteries keep the voltage constant as they age while the current drops More modern cameras that use alkaline batteries leverage the constant current of that battery chemistry. Without a mercury battery in a camera that was designed for one, the meter becomes more inaccurate as the battery ages. I use the Pocket Light Meter app on my phone if I don't have my antique Seconic Studio Deluxe meter. Enjoy!!!

    I agree with your findings. I have all the 1.4's (8 element, 7 element, early and late versions) I struggle to see any difference. It takes some serious pixel peeping and to be honest I don't think anyone viewing an image cares. In my testing I've found the f2 to be the best overall and use that one the most of my Takumars. My three go to vintage lenses are my OM 50 1.4, Canon FDn and Pancolar 1.8. I use them far more than the Takumars. Great review, enjoyed watching it.

The body with the green R isn't compatible with the 8 element 50mm f1.4, but the later body with the red R was modified to function with that lens. The rear element protrudes into the camera more than other lenses when focused at infinity and could be hit with by the mirror on the earlier body with the green R engraved on the rewind knob.

The images at best are thin, low contrast and practically useless. At worst, you get nothing at all. And, the "developer" stinks to high heaven in use. The final coffin nail is that for those who think they are saving money or convenience, think again. If you want to compound B&W developer from raw components, A decent developer can be made from two chemicals (one less) which cost little or no more(D-23). Add one or two more chemicals, still cheap as dirt, and you can compound one of the best developers ever (D-76). So, what's the point of wasting your time and money for film over this crap?

      Well, for me it's an allergy to monomethyl-p-aminophenol hemisulfate, but in the film processing world we would call it Metol which is in both D23 and D76. 35 years with my bare hands in D76 was mistake I wish I could take back.

      @@nuovofresco Sorry to hear that. If shifted toward phenodone based developers many years ago, in part to lesser exposure to meiol/Elon, although I have not totally dismissed metol from my chemical stockpile. I have been fortunate in 60+ years to have never had an allergic reaction to photo chemistry. However I was not so fortunate when I did Cibachromes in their early days. The mix of its bleach and fixer, even with a interim water rinse and final rinse in the processing drum could not overcome the fumes when you popped that sucker open. Before I smartened up to what was happening, I nearly gassed myself onto the floor a couple of times. But oh those Cibas were nice! I became too sensitive to those fumes, so had to shift to C-41 and EP-2 printing (at the time).

      @@nuovofresco Rodinal or Xtol could be good choices developers without any metol, Rodinal being easy to homemake and stores much longer but is not as good as Xtol, especially for faster films.

    What is the specific name of the recipe?

    • @nuovofresco
      @nuovofresco 3 года назад

      I believe it's Caffenol C. I added a bit more washing soda, because it was a monohydrate, to compensate for the single water molecule attached to the Sodium Carbonate. It's important to test your washing soda. It's available in a decahydrate which would leave your solution terribly under active if you don't adjust the quantity to compensate for the 10 water molecules.

    Just found you on RUclips and love your videos ....what are your supplies? Is that a regular printer photograph? Is that a gel you put on it and the stain is ? Thank you for any comments as I find your trees haunting

      Thanks Christine, The print was made using an Epson 7900 printer on canvas. The surface of the print was coated with acrylic gloss medium and allowed to dry. Once dry, I was able to rub the image down with acrylic paint using a damp sponge. I prefer to use inexpensive artist grade acrylics because the drying time (or open time) is a little longer than artist grade acrylics so it leaves me more time to work the surface, Cheers, Ross
