I FUCKING hate VW valve covers. I've tried just about everything, the only thing that actually did it was bolt on covers with o-ring style gaskets. Buuuuut they hit the body a little bit. Great.

The other thing you might find with the lights dragging the engine down is that if voltage isn't stable the injector data becomes important and MS2 (not sure which one this is but MS2 is what I've worked on) doesn't have a great voltage correction. So it could be that when the voltage drops (I'm seeing from 14.8 down to 12 here) the engine is also leaning out due to slower opening times on the injectors. Learned that lesson the hard way trying to get my project cars to start good in the cold with poor battery

when I had a DD Beetle I had the valve covers coated in RTV and stuck to the valve covers. They didn't leak and I could adjust the valves several times before it caused me grief.
