The Mid School Sessions
Великобритания
Добавлен 3 окт 2011
A channel dedicated to documentation, restoration and preservation of the Mid School BMX bikes we rode in the 1990's. Bike Checks, History, Features, and more.
Are your BMX bars bent? A quick way to make sure your bars are strait.
In this video we take a look at a quick and easy way to check if your handlebars are bent. This is especially important if you are planning to refinish or restore a set of bars, as you don't want to go to that time and effort only to discover that the bars are bent when you put them on the bike.
Often when you buy a set of old bars for a project you have very little knowledge of their history, so this "how to" will allow you to quickly check if they are good to use on your build.

Просмотров 1623 месяца назад
In this video we look at the variations in the Mid School Haro Sports, and highlight some variations that will help you identify the model year of any particular bike you are looking at. Many bashguard sports are incorrectly dated, and this is because the bikes look very similar across the years. Add to this the fact that many of them have been refinished or restored, and it can be difficult to...

Love the video. But can we talk about the hideous graphics on this bike?
@@AlaskaBikeDoctor it was the early 90’s, that says it all.
✌🏻😊
👍
Nice job! Thanks for making a video like this.
Glad you liked it!
Great restoration! Really gave me a flashback of me maintaining and rebuilding my bikes back in the day! A couple things though. One, I didn’t know that clipping the gyro cable was an option and then having a “replacement head” hat is this witchery? I don’t think these were available back in my time of the mid to late 80’s than early 90’s? What is that piece called? Secondly, a lot of people don’t understand the importance of what I call bearing grease, maybe lithium grease these days? Put that on everything just as you did in the video! Back in the day though, I read an article in BMX Plus on maintaining your breaks, and one of the things I always did, was take a plastic Ziploc baggie, get a gob of bearing grease on it, remove the brake cable from the housing, then run the inner cable through the grease and insert it back into the housing. Will make your brakes feel like butter! Everyone always asked me back in the day why my brakes were so smooth…. That was it! Plus it makes your cables last longer!
Glad you enjoyed it! The “knarp” used to shorten the upper cable is a Dia Compe item not an Odyssey item. They came with the 990 brakes so that you could set your own straddle cable length. Using it on the lever end to adjust the Gyro cable is an old mid school hack and it works amazingly well. Agree on the grease. Makes everything run so much better! I have a separate video in the how to section that deep dives on the gyro setup if you are interested to know a bit more detail. 👍
Just curious about the barrel adjusters…. If they are all the way screwed out , won’t that make it difficult to tighten the slack once the cable is stretched and broken in?
No not at all. You can adjust it at the brake calliper for the lower section, or the “splitter” in the upper cable if the slack is above the gyro. It’s far more important to use the barrel adjusters on the gyro plates to balance the system, and then use the other adjustment points for cable tension. Hope that helps.
Great bike... and even better hair!!!!! :D
Glad you like the way the bike turned out.
The time and effort in making these videos deserves serious R>E>S>P>E>C>T!!!! :)
Thanks. Appreciate the kind words!
Awesome vid. Thank you for taking the time to put it together. I had a '90 Neon Sport... loved it :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
This just what I needed. Setting barrel adjusters was a mystery
Glad you found it helpful. If you take your time you can get them to work amazing. 👍
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks!
Is it true that the 1999 ‘Hevron Bars’, without the knurling on the top bar, like that came on the Zippo, are hi-ten steal not full chromoly? So were lower quality and to go on cheaper bikes.
Yes, by that stage Haro had the Mirra Pro bar and the Kneesaver 2 bar, so the regular kneesavers we only specced on entry models.
Nice video very informative
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
This was a great series. Thanks
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
I enjoy your channel, very nice build. I used to ride flatland years ago. My last bike was an 88 Haro Master. I'm curious, what do these bikes cost nowadays?
Glad you are enjoying the channel! Cost varies significantly based on model year and condition. It can be anything between $200-$2000 based on the ones I have seen for sale. Hope that helps. 👍
Great video! I’m not a Haro guy at all so forgive my ignorance but the 1989 Haro and 1990 Haro catalogs do not show the Sport. Just the Master and Team. 1990 didn’t make the catalog?
Glad you enjoyed it! Take a look at this video I made on the history of the Haro Sport. It covers what happened in 89/90 as well as the relaunch of the model. ruclips.net/video/K6p8m628t18/видео.htmlsi=hAyvoxecMSYK8Mam
Thanks for sharing I have a 2000 gt vertigo rescue bike full of surface rust I will be trying this Thanks again
Glad you found the video useful. I’m sure it will make a big difference to the condition. Let me know how it goes. 👍
Awesome channel thanks for sharing
Thanks and welcome 👍
I had a haro master, too heavy. had a hairline crack on the down-tube...bought a 89 sport...added my own bashguard I did a no-handed wall fakie on that thing at the skate park in Rockville, IL in 1990. my favor ride ever. i had peregrins, bashguard, pitbull front/rear, odyssey gyro, GT four-piece bars, GT meat mallet neck. evert week, i completely dissembled it and detailed i. then someone stole it. i am still heartbroken. yeah i'm only 5-8 that thing was long.
That build sounds like it was amazing. Great parts list. 👍
Just discovered your channel, amazing stuff thanks, I subscribed straight away, I’m looking forward to getting to stuck in to your other videos, I love the way you zoom in on what you’re doing, it’s really helpful when restoring a bike yourself 👌🏽
Welcome to the channel. Glad you are enjoying it and finding the content helpful. We have a lot more content in the works as well so keep an eye out for that.
Parts,,not a part but parts I don't need at the moment! Many times lol
Haha, agreed! Often way more than just one.
Well done! The background info you give makes your videos even better my man. The bike turned out great.
Really appreciate the kind words! Will hopefully kick off the next project soon, so keep an eye out for that.
So I’m curious, did you realize you have a semi pro hub in the front and a regular loose ball hub in the rear? My semi pros front and rear had those Suzue rubber/metal dust covers. … they are impossible to get if they’re damaged.
Yes that’s correct. You can also see that when I strip the rear hub the grease in there was pretty fresh. I suspect that the rear hub had been recently serviced, and as you say, the old rear seals were replaced with more readily available steel ones. I can only speculate though, but that seems the most likely reason. 👍
whats the bolt size for the bash plate of 89 bashgaurd?
I don’t have an 89 so can’t say for sure but a quick google suggested it might be M5x18. Hope that helps. 👍
I was just thinking what’s the worst part of the build for myself.. it’s got to be the finish in a way.. I’m very happy but always looking for something I wish I did differently.. there almost never truly done and the thought that I need to find or pull another bike out of the collection to throw a bunch of $$ at lol. I love this channel and don’t know how you don’t have 100k. Keep at it you will in time with content like this.
Thanks for the kind words. 100% agree they are never done haha. Always an improvement that can be done, and it goes on forever. That’s half the fun though, constantly dialling them in.
@@themidschoolsessions lol absolutely. I just (finished) a sort of long term build, of course not happy with the seat that will be swapped and dropping off a new project frame set to be powdered today lol. I keep warning my buddy who just got back into it to be careful! It can be very addicting.
@@Junior-fd8ux Addicting is an understatement! haha
Awesome build love the fact you stayed with the one piece cranks instead of going 3 piece and the tidbit about the odyssey gyro was awesome miss those days
Thanks. Stoked you enjoyed it!
The general as thats what i was riding then
Good choice!
Great video. Gonna take a look through your others 👍 Takes me back to being a teenager putting my own bikes together. Never had the luxury of a stand tho! Had a love/hate relationship with gyros. Would have been good to shorten the top cable like you did. Remember trying to use cut down plug terminals to shorten the top cable at the gyro end. Ground the headtube down on a pk ripper to fit a gyro too 😂
I never had a stand back in the day either. I’m just getting old now haha. Yes shortening the top cable makes a huge difference, but all the little tweaks add up. They can work really well with a bit of fiddling here and there. Hope you enjoy the other videos as well. 👍
Well done. Thanks for these tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant video again jon, well worth the wait 👌
Thanks Jamie! Glad you enjoyed it. Struggled to find the time for this episode with work and the Christmas period but hopefully they become more frequent going forward.
Very nicely done Jonathan! Between you and Matt Sully, I'm get a twitch for an early Haro Sport!! Haha!!
Thanks Matt! They are definitely an acquired taste, but have a special place in the early mid school era.
Wilkerson
Good choice!
Excellent video 👍
Thank you very much!
This is an excellent channel glad i found you new sub here 👍
Thanks for the kind words! Stoked to have you on board. Episode 4 should be out soon.
I had a yellow 91 sport bashgaurd it got stolen a month later 😢
That’s a bummer. The yellow ones are awesome.
My 1989 sport was stolen too. "it's just a bike" he said. "a 1000 bike my mom said. it's almost grand theft auto."
Just found your channel! This was a great video that really helped to explain the history behind this iconic bike! Thanks for taking the time to create this for us! 🤙🏻
Thanks for the kind words! Really appreciate it. Episode 4 is nearly finished so keep an eye out for that.
Amazing. Whens the next episode??
Coming soon! It’s a bit of a monster so trying to decide if I should cut it into 2, or just put it out as a 30 minute full length feature…
Never got the bash guard thing...nothing but added weight nobody needed
It was definitely a trend that didn’t last too long.
I used it all day, every day. How do you not want structural reinforcement?
I was not even familiar with this bike until seeing a few of your shorts in aweee.. so sick
Glad you are enjoying the episodes. Number 4 should be done in the next week so keep an eye out for that.
Muito top gostei muito do vídeo
Thanks!
Love this, great work!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
I’m in my 50 & I’m from Cincinnati Ohio & I just got ahold of one of my old bike friends recently & he’s in a bike club called the Cincinnati Flatland Fanatics , we were talking on FB & he got me hyped told me i should pull the trigger a buy a bike & now he’s got me looking for a bike , but the only thing is , I don’t want any bike or these new bikes out there just because their not made of 4130 Crome Molly & I,m looking for one type of bike out there either a Haro Master from 88 up to 91 or a Haro Team Master from 88 up to 91 or even a Haro Air Master , my preferred bike would be the 1989 Haro Team Master with bash guard black & im only looking for the frame & fork for any of there’s bikes so I can build around it & put my own parts on it , it’s got to be a Master , anyone out there knows of anybody selling a Master Frame & fork or were I could buy one hit me up on this post .
👍
Back in the days of mid-school Haro,s in my opinion the Team Master was the top ranking Haro , you couldn’t get better than that when it came to Haro bicycles . The FST & the FSX were entry level Haro,s , then came the Sport , The Team Sport mid level Haro,s , then the Air Master entry-level pro bicycle , then the Master & Team Master , top of the top pro level , not including any group one bicycles just because they were strictly racing . The Team Master any of them were the best of Haro bicycles , you couldn’t get a better bike than that . Over the years back when I rode my first Haro was the 1987 Team Sport , the 1988 FSX , the 1989 Team Master with the bash guard in black , the 1990 Master with the flat bottom bash guard / grey with purple specks & mother of pearl over spray , & the 1992 Air Master / neon red . I to this day still own all of these bikes , they are from my childhood & over the years I have put the same parts on every one of them , the only thing that’s different with them is the frame & fork every part on each bike is the same down to the cranks , grips , seat , headset , rims everything & don’t get me wrong all of them are different beast & ride differently , just because they have the same parts on them don’t make them the same bike when it comes down to it , the frame & forks play a big part & difference in each bike & how they ride , hell you can blindfold me & let me ride each bike & by the way that they ride I can tell you which bike I’m on , I know the feel of each bike by how they ride .
Awesome that you still own all of your old bikes. I wish I could track down some of my old ones.
Mine cracked! lol
Haro sport!👍👍👍👍👍
Great bikes!
Great job and vídeo. Congrats👏🏻🇧🇷
Thanks!
Things are gonna change,,I can feel it.
👍
Good stuff man,,subbed!
Thanks!
Cool video🎉🎉🎉 i've got the 87 one! Still looking for the original stem tho
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Really enjoying these vids. Very informative and very well edited 👌 Will do a few upgrades on my 90 sport at some point 👍
Glad you are enjoying the edits. 90 Sports are great bikes. Definitely the hardest of the bash guard sports to get hold of.
Brilliant video as usual jon, always excited for the next episode
Thanks Jamie! Stoked you are enjoying them.
You didn't mention that since the 93 model, the seat post is 1", from 90 to 92 use 7/8 seat post...
That’s definitely another important difference to call out. I just listed the ones people could easily spot visually, but seat tube diameter is a good indicator no doubt.
