Alton Bay Ice Runway - four go-arounds before landing
Просмотров 8303 года назад
Alton Bay Ice runway was open for two weeks in 2021. Sunday 2/21 was a perfect day for general aviation pilots to test their skill landing on an ice runway. The great weather drew many planes to the only FAA-approved ice runway that day, and the airport pattern filled with planes waiting to land. FUD is Foreign Object Debris. At 1:35 a pilot announces that he saw a piece of aircraft on the runw...

"Muddy Creek" 😆 I've paddled it and it was the most clear waters I've ever been on. Pristine.
This video could have been so much better. Very disappointing, instead of calling out all of the sites bridges, dams power plants you talked about your spots. Audio in and out. Thumbs way down
I’m in Harrisburg this is awesome!
Thanks Joe, great video, been think for alot of years how to view the Susq River from the air. Boated the river on Lake Aldred which is between Safe Harbour Dam & Holtwood Dam for over 30 year had a boat from 1966-1996 & we accessed the river at Pequea. If U have not tried it yet your next adventure U should ride the Northwest Lancaster River Trail which runs from Columbia 14 miles northwest to Falmouth Boat ramp. See many of the cool sites along the way best one is the White Cliffs of Conoy which is just south of Bainbridge.
Thanks Rob. I have biked the Northwest Lancaster River. It is a great river trail.
Looks like funks pond
I also heard that John Wayne owned that farm but could never find internet evidence. I know the passenger from the Thomasville Flea. He likes my incinerator finds. Awesome video!
Double check your info Rangers at state park say the water color is due to the roots of Cypress trees. They produce a tannic substance that causes the color
Ahhhhh....The beautiful Susquehanna! I saw a documentary on Chesapeake bay. The journey and story begins from where the Susquehanna r. meets the Chesapeake bay. I was insipired by the mountainous view and many, many islands in the river. It’s a landscape to paint. I finally saw the view with my own eye from New York to Washington DC! The cross winds at the location are pretty strong and variable. That’s a scary flight I’m sure. Thanks for the serial of that location.
Thanks for the great video. I read somewhere that the Susquehanna is a mile wide at Harrisburg, but it doesn't look like it in this video. Does anyone know about that?
It is over a mile wide down below Wrightsville. The Lake Clark area due to the safe harbor dam.
I want to see this video in the winter with snow.
Here is a view of the Susquehanna with Ice. ruclips.net/video/_4AU8zixtXY/видео.htmlsi=VnDrWr7iN7gtVmhA
Most of the spots I fished are now posted. Sucks
So great! Can't wait to binge your stuff, beautiful and informative. Top notch!
Man! Such a great video! I'm about to set out on a canoe trip and this has got me super stoked! Thanks!
Made me realize how clutch a small drone would be...to get a preview of what's around the next bend 😲
I live by this river near Harrisburg and actually didn't know it started out of a lake ? I thought springs ? What lake is that ?
It is Otsego Lake. The lake is by the Cooperstown. Cooperstown is known for the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
I live in wilkes barre and we would camp on richards island
It’s hard to know where you’re at on the Susquehanna. I’ve crossed before when going to Harrisburg and have no knowledge of the islands.
Glad this video popped up! Do you have anything going north?
I'm amazed you were able to paddle with so much gear on top of the kayaks. Why did you have so much stuff?
It is the gear needed for a multi-day camping trip. It is not uncommon.
I'm surprised that there are no guardrails. Why is that?
A guardrail would get in the way of snow removal. Also it would have little value in the higher elevations. Some of the snow drifts can be over 20 feet. They don't remove the snow down to the gravel surface. They just cut a pass.
I did some camping in the pokamoke state park in the early 1990's. With my brother, wife,n two kids. The camping was great n the fishing on the pokomoke river was a real great time. We had my white water canoe n my brothers speed boat a 4man bay liner ... My nephew n I took out the canoe we had so much fun fishing we barely made it back by dark. We saw a bald eagle n deer. N caught n released alot of fish.
Really cool video!
Enjoyed the vids Any future plans to add more ??
What a lovely video, thank you for sharing it with us! 👍👍
Awesome video. Is there anyone I can contact about the map details with all the portages and campsites
I am not aware of a map that covers the Susquehanna from Cooperstown. Here is a link to the north branch PA River trail. emheritage.org/north-branch-susquehanna-river-water-trail/
Would you be willing to share your overlay of parks and portages. I found a map of each section besides middle branch PA
I want to do this. Your video serves as a good reference guide for me. Thank you.
Great video...fish the susky every chance i get...smallmouth heaven!
Seriously cool video. Thanks for sure.
Pretty cool. Thanks for posting.
7:56 I'd recognize those two bridges anywhere❣️
8:10 I knew it!!
Looks great I am hoping to get out there and ride this summer.
Wow, I find ice formations fascinating, large like this or up close, just surreal and temporary like a dream. I've driven and ridden motorcycle up 11&15 and 147 countless times along this stretch, then on to Tioga Co. or points beyond. Being a map guy who likes to know where in the world I am and a driving/riding(what's the word for apex fiend) enthusiast, your perspective as a pilot here is, yeah remember your first meal. Steady Joe, sorry for the distraction but I owe you one. Look at those patterns and curves of flowing symmetry. If this was a pill that made you laugh,...Buddeeee,...cha ching. 442 views in 11 mos? The tunes are good too. Soothing, unlike what I imagine you were feeling behind that engine and prop. I would love to see Sharp Mt. westward from Rt 81 down Stony Valley to Dauphin with the leaves off. I still love hiking that ridge with it's fin of conglomerate rock sticking out, primordial. Thanks again Joe, you made my day. Time to get out there. Don't be surprised if I look you up to buy you a beer or whatever you like. This is inspiring. Yeah, you know a stall when you see one. Bye.
Such a neat area to wander and explore. I'm amazed that the top 4' of the dam is plywood against steel poles. I noticed it about 35 yrs ago when a buddy and I were fishing, in what would have been it's shadow if there wasn't a raging storm to the north and west. Water was splashing over the top there above us when we realized what was holding it back. It was one of those laughable moments when we looked at each other with eyebrows in the wind yet squintin' and grinnin'. Warms my blood just thinking about it. The Mason Dixon Trail is fun all along there. A loop I like for a little blood pumper is from the dam up across the power line and up across the top to the outcrop, down the switchbacks, along Mill Creek and back up the road. I find the islands a treat, rugged, windswept, glorious really. Reminds me of Canada in a sense, and it always feels like you could come face to face with an Indian out there. I would love to discuss buying some fuel if you have any free time. I've not been up in a little plane since I was a kid in the '60s. Happily retired where killing time is self defense, and I might write a book. Think I should? Thanks Joe.
Looking at the comments, I'm guessing I'm the one only who loves the music choice!
Wow, you guys got some stunning weather for the ride to the summit of Mt Washington. Winter is one of the best times to see the farthest from the summit as there is low humidity in the air, in the summer the humidity haze limits viewing distances. Were hikers allowed to go in the observatory/ visitor ctr to warm up, use the restroom, etc?
Chris, The observatory/ visitor center was close to the public.
Just added this to the bucket list and your video popped up first on my search. I am from Chesapeake Bay area.
omg
I used to know the guy who farmed those islands. They barged everything across so they had to use small equipment and small trucks
I own this plane now and find it very enjoyable
Jed, I miss being able to fly with the doors off on a warm summer day. It is a great plane.
Metric . . .
Great video! Great adventure! I’m from lancaster area and have been hiking around safe harbor and Hollywood dam. I’m curious how those portages went. From what I read a 24 notice is required?
I showed up at the guard shack of the Safe Harbor Dam one dark evening WITHOUT notice, while canoeing from Lenox, Pa. to the Chesapeake over New Year's of '85, and got treated like a king. They showed me a pavillion to spend the night in (while adding that if I needed to get down tonight, they could portage me tonight). I let them portage me in the morning, and they let the Holtwood Dam guys know that I'd be coming there next. I didn't even know that they provided you with a portage, until a guy in a bar told me shortly before i walked up to the Safe Harbor guard shack. I had first walked a mile downstream to the bar to eat dinner while hand-wringing about how I'd probably have to walk up to the guard shack to ask permission to portage through a gate that had a no trespassing sign. But nope; a guy in the bar told me, "Just call them and bitch; federal law requires them to give you a portage, because they can't block navigation." So, I finally walked up to the guard shack. It being late at night, the guy was so scared as I approached that he looked like he was about to jump for cover, so that's when I said, "Somebody told me you provide canoe portages". And that's when it got real friendly; we sat in the guard shack having nice conversations for an hour or three, including with the third-shift guy when he came along.
Spent a weekend there in late 70s,browns lake campground? I believe, slippery trail down in morning, pristine creek at bottom as I remember, those were the days my friend! GOD BLESS.
Go8nb down in a car car was something else. Never again!
That snow cat is very interesting. Cool camera as well
Thanks for a phenomenal video I have paddled these waters from above Wrightsville to Havre de Grace. Just yesterday I was at ‘ The Neck, ‘ which is the narrowest part of the River just above Holtwood Dam. Like a beautiful woman, I never ever get tired of looking at this River and the nature surrounding it.
Any of the fish in the Chesapeake Bay make their way up the Susquehanna River into York, PA?
There are fish lifts on every dam so yes, we do occasionally catch rock fish.
From Mansfield and been to the airport plenty of times for their Fly In Breakfasts.... the BEST!!!!
Fascinating! Thank you for sharing this.
