Stefans Grove - Composer and Writer (c.1980)
Hi guys
Here is an English language documentary made originally 16mm motion picture film (newly-digitized) featuring my late father, Prof. Stefans Grové! It is believed to have been made around the year 1980. Here is the content of this documentary:
-General background given on Stefans Grové as well as the difference between his style of music as compared to that of Arnold van Wyk and Hubert du Plessis.
-Examples of Grové's piano-playing.
-Ms Reinette Heydenriech speaks about how she approached Grové regarding an alternative harmonization for a choir work, namely "Psalm 18".
-Former SABC employee [unknown man] speaks about his association with Grové beginning in the 1940s and Grové's interpre...

Hi all! Happy Christmas / Happy Holidays! I created this one just in time for the Festive Season 2023 and again we see Alfonso Ignatius Freug (that crazy frog) with his friends Moodles (the Dachshund), Mango (the Pug) and Pootwoot (the strange alien)! I've always loved the song "Silver Bells" (1978) by The Mistletoe Disco Band since I was a small kid. It was also featured on the album "Hooked O...

I always wanted to make a Halloween-themed film! I know Halloween has passed but the funny thing is - ...

Hey again! Here is footage of 13yr old me playing the cello with piano accompaniment by my dad - the one and only Prof. Stefans Grové ! Hey all! Long time no post! Here is a super rare sound recording I made when I was 14 years old back in 1992 of my dad playing "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue", one of the most famous 1920s charleston tunes ever! Yes, my dad, Prof. Stefans Grové DID play early jazz tunes but very rarely and for fun (I begged him to play it LOL!), although in the end he still preferred classical music over all else...

    That and wax cylinders were among the earliest recording media... however the first recording media was I think charcoal on paper. It wasn't realized back then, but recent computer technology was able to decipher the recordings and play them back. Saw a fairly new documentary about this recent discovery.

      @CG19781 2 года назад

      freddie689, vielen Dank für Ihre Frage. Ich habe Google Translate verwendet, um Ihre Nachricht zu übersetzen und Ihnen auch zu antworten. Ich hoffe es ist richtig übersetzt!!! Mein Vater konnte Deutsch! :-) In Bezug auf die Folie - ich habe gerade eine namens "Heavy Aluminium Foil" verwendet, die im Laden gekauft wurde. Man bekommt keine Folie auch nur annähernd an die Originalfolie vom Typ 1870er/1880er Jahre! :-) Sie schneiden einen Streifen so breit wie den Dorn (Zylinder, um den Sie die Folie wickeln) und auch lang genug in der Länge, damit es in Ordnung ist, ihn um den Dorn zu wickeln. Dann glätten Sie es zum Beispiel auf einer sehr flachen, glatten Oberfläche mit Küchenpapier (als würden Sie es polieren!), bis es super glatt ist wie ein Glas / Spiegel und keine Falten usw. Sonst reißt die Folie leicht! Sie wickeln es um den Dorn und stellen wieder sicher, dass es fest und glatt ist. Sie befestigen es mit Klebeband oder ähnlichem am Dorn. Um die Glätte zu verbessern, geben Sie ein paar Tropfen Öl (wie im Baumarkt erhältlich) hinzu und streichen es mit dem Küchenpapier über die Folie, damit die Nadel bei der Aufnahme über die Folie gleitet. Stellen Sie die Aufnahmetiefenschraube so ein, dass sie eine leichte Spur macht, aber genau richtig, damit die Nadel beginnt, eine Rille zu schneiden, ohne die Folie zu zerreißen!! Es kann sehr leicht reißen! Es braucht viel Übung, um richtig aufzunehmen! Bezüglich Kleber - ich habe keinen verwendet, da die Folie leicht zu entfernen sein muss, wenn Sie ein neues Folienblatt für die nächste Aufnahme auflegen möchten! Sie befestigen die Folie einfach mit Klebeband. Für Interesse, hier ist ein Link zu meiner Powerpoint-Präsentation, die ich vor ein paar Jahren mit Bildern gemacht habe, als ich mein Modell gebaut habe. Es ist auf Englisch, aber vielleicht helfen die Bilder auch! :-) www.saarchivist.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Christopher-Grov%C3%A9-ONE-SMALL-STEP-FOR-TINFOIL.pdf Hoffe das hilft! :-)

    Hi. Impressive results. Would you mind sharing any details on how you built this? I would like to try and build one myself. I'm especially curious on what you used for your diaphragm and stylus, and also the mandrel. Your results are some of the best I've heard from phonographs like this on RUclips.

      Hello wernerempire, sorry I am only replying now (a whole year later LOL!), but I was totally unaware of a setting on my channel video options that actually "blocked" me from seeing/replying to comments on my videos!! Only figured out last night now to "unlock" it LOL! Crazy I know! Anyway... Regarding your question, I made contact with a Mr. Charles Smith in the USA in February 2011 and he assisted me in a kind of 'online training' session that lasted almost a whole year till April 2012. We corresponded by email; I sent him schematic diagrams / pictures of what I drew and he would 'yes' and 'no' and give advice, as I live in South Africa and he in USA! Had to make them easy to understand as I couldn't sit next to him in real life! But we got it made in the end. Here is a link from a website on how I found him as he had made 6 models of the Scientific American. www.phonozoic.net/tinfoil/index.html I had failed again and again trying just to build a WORKING tinfoil phonograph of any model! I wanted to give up so many times until I found Mr. Smith!! It took me 23 years (1989-2012), but he was very patient and assisted me! If you make contact with him, he may send you the original 1878 plans which appeared as part of a supplement to the Scientific American magazine. Here is a PowerPoint presentation on my 23 dream to get a working machine made which I presented in Cape Town in 2014 (IASA Conference) and again in 2017 (SASA Conference)! www.saarchivist.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Christopher-Grov%C3%A9-ONE-SMALL-STEP-FOR-TINFOIL.pdf Regarding the diaphragm material it was a rectangle of a kind of metallic "sheet" material, not sure as it was posted to me with all the other parts to assemble. For the stylus, it was an old gramophone player stylus cut in half that you glued into place in the stylus bar. The mandrel I believe is made of solid steel with a grooved thread cut into it. Hope this helps :-)
