Adding a little bit of content from a newer game to an older game is not a demake. It’s like calling a game that got small updates and visual enhancements a remake. The whole thing has to be rebuilt to a new visual standard to make it a remake or demake, without straying too far from the original except for the graphics.
I deliberately look a fairly loose definition of demake here for one more reason: I thought it would be more fun, and it was
Woah

I commented before on another of your videos, and forgot to leave a comment here, but Game Freak clearly didn't care much for fire types, and I don't get it. Two minutes, without looking it up, think of ten fire proof materials, now think of how many things can be lit on fire. It's the easiest type to come up with, besides maybe grass if you don't live in a desert, or water if you do live on an island/by a beach. Maybe if you live in the rain forest you can think of a bunch of bugs.
yeah it's truly bizarre, which is odd given how prominent a symbol/theme fire is in most popular culture generally, from antiquity to now
this version has not yet achieved a sufficient amount of trumpets
there can be more trumpets, promise
Never played donkey Kong. So how is it that, after 25 years of life. fair enough - if you're just looking for more fights and generic items, it has those in spades
I like how Falkner was on the list of toughest gym leaders from that Google result you did (despite the fact that he is infamously easy lol).
yeah falkner is pretty weak, generally speaking
@@tortoisecity The power of random Google suggestions lol.
Ha i ran through this bum 🤣
definitely possible to do so, but also no doubt that the cranidos is just stupidly strong
My friend poison be tanky wdym. It’s a great secondary type if you want to 4x resist something.
at the cost of another weakness usually
Stone miss missed throw Miss wrecker Miss tomb Miss slide Hey at least there's 20bp smack down
well it's 50bp but yes I agree
The balance of these games is and always has been ABYSMAL. We didn't even talk about Ice types or how the impact of Bug types generally having low base stat totals. How crazy is it to have fully evolved Pokemon vary anywhere from 300-600 base stat totals (not including legendaries that are higher). It just ensures the majority of Pokemon will be useless. Every time they added another type to fix a problem they created more problems than they solved... EVERY SINGLE TIME. Even worse, if they can't fix their dumb type chart they could at least utilize abilities a bit better. We have examples of Levitate (makes you immune to a single type) or Thick Fat (50% damage reduction to more than one type). So let's imagine a type combo that has far too many weaknesses... you could use a "thick fat" like ability to make them have a reasonable number. Let's imagine if it is a type combo with multiple 4x weaknesses... you could create an ability that only allows type advantages to do up to 2x damage.... OR you could have an ability that halves the super effective damage they take (meaning only the multiple 4x weaknesses are now turned into 2x weaknesses). You can make ANY type combination work by using abilities in this way. Heck, you could even make a tanky Ice type by not having to fix the terrible type chart by just giving an ability that reduces all damage in half... they have sooo many weaknesses, no resistances, and a type combo with Ice is likely to have multiple 4x weaknesses that it will just turn a bad type combo with Ice into the equivalent of a decent type. In fact, why the heck is Super Effective damage 2x to begin with? That is WAAAY to high, especially when you consider double weaknesses take it up to 4x damage and the fact that offense is too powerful in general. Why is the STAB bonus so freaking high? Some benefit is great but 50% is too much, especially since all these benefits can stack on top of one another. No wonder there are so many one shots in this game. Then, we can get into the complete lack of consideration of how many of each type goes into a game. We have a number of generations with a TON of Water types that are lackluster and similar while only having one or two of useable fire types. Certain generations only have like one or two of certain types, such as ghost or dragon. We have gen 1 with a ton of poison types, while something like gen 3 has a ton of dark types, and both gens have too many terrible water types. It's just all over the place and there is no rhyme or reason to any of it. On top of all of it, they won't even admit there is power creep. They won't acknowledge how powerful offense is, and continue to add items like the "choice" scarf/band/specs that not only increases the value of all out offense at the cost of strategy, but actively REDUCES strategy since they lock you into only using a single move. I mean... look at high level play and how many one shots occur. This should NEVER be happening in a balanced game, and it means when a defensive Pokemon actually is good it has to be just ridiculous and insane. Then they put gimmicks on top that take it to the next level, like giving the already good Pokemon a mega evolution, or dynamaxing, or Z moves. They even used the gimmick of changing your type instead of just biting the bullet and balancing the type tree lol. What a joke. Then we have the pitiful options for moves that are available, where they insist on either base power too low to be useful, or moves that just have insane amounts of base power. This at least has gotten better as time goes on, but if they would just have more moves in the game with varying base power levels you can do some balance by determining who has access to the higher base power moves. For instance, if they insist on some Pokemon having super low base stats, they should be the ones to gain access to the super powerful moves at higher levels.... that would at least create some semblance of balance. But no... a Pokemon is either feast or famine. It is either given ridiculous moves/coverage/stats/abilities or it's terrible and can't compete. This isn't rocket science. I have made my own type chart with my own types, and if I could do the programming and had the resources to make my own game it would blow theirs out of the water. These games are lazy cash grabs at this point and the quality keeps getting worse and worse.
ykw I made the video but you've clearly thought about this more than I have
@@tortoisecity , yeah I have ideas for games; can't do the programming though to save my life. I have a background in both music and art, but doing everything digital is a whole different animal, plus I've never attempted animation before. The problem with RPG as a genre is it is very content heavy... there are a TON of assets that would have to be produced, and even if it was possible to do it by myself it could take a decade. I've tried for years and can't learn programming, plus I'm kind of computer stupid and have a hard time learning the programs I'd need to use to do art or music digitally. If I could figure out the programs maybe I could work as part of a team? I mean, I know a lot of random things about game development but I just can't put it all together. If I could though I think I could take on Pokemon.... they are lazy and I smell blood in the water.
fair enough! I hope you keep trying, making things you're interested in is lots of fun and good if only for your own enjoyment
Bug and ice types are totally fucked, even to this very day they're almost useless.
yeah they're still deserving of a significant buff, don't think anyone here hasn't mentioned ice types at least once
Would it have really killed them to bring Rock Climb back from the dead, then make it Rock-type like it always should’ve been (there’s millions of physical Normal moves already, even without HMs), then make it 100% accurate or at least 95% if they’re that adamant, and finally massively increased its distribution among Rock-types, and then boom you killed two birds with one stone. Made a previously useless HM useful whiling also making a more accurate Rock STAB in the process.
rock climb being normal was legitimately baffling, and misleading
@@tortoisecity I think the idea or rather the excuse is that rock climbing is an activity that normal humans even animals like mountain goats can do, thus the "normal type" logic. Tho in a world where "rock magic" exists, I'd imagine that would help make scaling rocks a whole lot easier, not to mention, a mountain goat pokemon would at the very least have a rock typing to reference its environment. In reality, Game Freak likes to play favorites (even though they would never admit it on record) given how certain types and pokemon get preferential treatment (legendaries not included cause of lore reasons)
Really surprised you never talked about the dead horse that is the Ice-type. We all know that Ice is bar none the worst defensive type in the game (1 resistance vs 4 weaknesses), with Rock being a close second (4 resistances vs 5 weaknesses). People may argue for Grass being down there but its resistances (to Water, Electric, and Ground) are more valuable then the Bug or Poison weaknesses………U-Turn aside, whereas with Rock the weaknesses outweighs the resistances. Anyways, back to Ice-types Most water-types still get any of Ice Beam, Blizzard, Ice Punch or Ice Fang to this day to this thing. Most Ice-types are slow and bulk when the type overall is better off offensively then defensively. Same with again Rock. And Hail was the worst weather cause it did jack (outside of Blizzard and Aurora Veil), until it was replaced with Snow which not only gives Ice-types the once long overdue defense boost, but also no longer forces you use Ice-types anymore. Sand at least let you use more than just Rock-types when it still opened the door for the superior Ground and Steel types to fit in. Hail/Snow’s Swift Swim equivalent Slush Rush also took forever. Sand got theirs in Sand Rush 2 gens before Hail did.
yeah the fact that water types are plentiful and on average pretty good while also getting broad offensive ice type coverage makes ice types super redundant
Counterpoint: I love poison types so they're great
this is a correct and good take
As a professional Ground type user GameFreak has been gutting them ever since XY Black was the last time I could play a monotype run with 5-6 teammates from their region But nowadays XY gave us Diggersby and Zygarde Sun and Moon Mudsdale and Palossand (Technically A. Dugtrio and 10% Zygarde) SWSH Only gave us Sandaconda and Runerigus and Galarian Stunfisk Scarlet and Violet though gave us plenty of options but when you think about it Ting-Lu is the only unique Ground Pokémon that doesn’t take inspiration from existing Pokemon but it does get credit for finally gifting me a Ground/Fighting type which is something I have been begging for since Gen 5
I take your point, but I also really like mudsdale and think it is good
Rock type moves piss me off so much, why can waterfall have 100% accuaracy but not rock slide
yeah it's just ridiculous, even one higher power rock move with 100% accuracy would be fine
this video is very important
you are very important
@@clemdelaclem dang right it is
I see videos raving about the genius of Gamefreak's design, and just laugh. The only thing worse than their design was their coding. I like Pokémon of course. Catching em, trading, hundreds of designs to get attached to, lots of grass, lakes, caves, mountains, rivers, oceans, islands to hunt through, really competitive multiplayer, but these games are the epitome of right place, right time. If someone had managed to come out with a better balanced game in the first two years before word of mouth turned Pokemon into a sleeper hit, that would have been it. No franchise, just a cute, quirky, laughably unbalanced and buggy game pair... That's IT. Bug types sucked so much for the first three generations because Game Freak was so frustrated with the overwhelming amount of bugs in their codes! The most ironed out of the 2D games, Black and White, is also the one where bugs start gaining ground with a vengeance! Still don't get why they hated fire types so much, though. They weren't even bad, mechanic wise, but there were hardly any to choose from! Diamond and Pearl might as well have said "Pick Ponyta or Chimchar!"
you might enjoy the other video I made on how much gen 4 gym leaders adhere to their type themes lmao
@@tortoisecity I'll look at it tonight.
🏌️♀️⛳
You missed Ice types being bad until Gen 9 and Normal and Psychic are more commonly seen as bottom 5 types because of their short comings in certain matchups
yeah ice types are still bad
Normal type Pokémon in the early Gens were crazy in Gen 1 to basically neutralize their typing itself (offensively) and a they got the all might power move return for some good damage along with extreme speed and hyper voice for good measure.
Toxic stopped being wide spread after Gen 7 very few non poison type mons get it in Gens 8 & 9. On top of it, Poison types also have 100% accurate toxic vs 90% with everything else
very much true, though I did focus mostly on how long it took to buff these mons to be better, not so much how they are right now
1:32 "they're not awful moves" ... my dude yes they are... Those moves are terrible 😂
imo they're not as bad moves like bind/constrict, but they're not good either (also leech life is now real good)
Poison got way better when fairy type came around
Yeah, didn't the nidos become top tier in gen 8?
fairy helped a lot, less familiar with the arc of the nidos, much as I enjoy them
One of the worst types right now its the psychic type because game freak nerfed it too hard in gen 2, dark shouldnt be imune to it, just resisting would be fine
Psychic could be strong against fairy
tbh not rushing to buff psychic as whole, bulky psychics can be a real menace sometimes
I think it's interesting that there's this concept that weak bug evolve early, which isn't true at all. It's basically just the first route bugs. Those being Caterpie, Weedle, Wurmple, Scatterbug, & Krickitot. The many other weak bugs still somehow evolve much later, towards the high teens or even in the 20s. Which just makes them outpaced all around. And plenty more evolve in the 30s into something still rather weak, especially by that point in the game. Such as Venomoth.
yeah putting aside the early access bugs evolving early, the others really aren't good either. like even by gen 4 when they were putting in mothim/wormadam and still making them bad as hell (yanmega is sick though)
Ice and bug should hit fairies for super effective damage.
tbh I wouldn't buff ice offensively, but certainly it could be less weak to things
@tortoisecity I don't actually mind tye ice type being a glass canon type. But when all the majority of ice types are bulky it makes no sense.
also a fair point, they could absolutely be buffed in one way or another
3:40 So Do I.
only real ones spend most of their week resetting after bubblebeam crits from misty and blackbelt karate chops
@@tortoisecity I Know I Did.
I'm convinced Game Freak hates the Electric type, too. They're always slow, frail Physical attackers despite Electric barely having any physical moves worth a damn. And if, by some miracle, a non-Legendary Electric type makes it above PU in its debut generation, Game Freak nerfs it down in the coming generations.
this is partly true, but electric does have the advantage of having only one weakness, as well as being one of the better solutions for dealing with the overwhelming number of bulky water types
They are one type that suffers the most from being "one note." IF an electric type actually is good, typically it has a poor move pool and the only decent moves it has are electric type.
I can agree that they are one note
Slow? Electrode, raichu, manectric are all fast wdym.
@@Zakatakamime Luxray's slow, Electivire is slow, Eelektross is slow, Ampharos is slow and only gets slower upon mega evolution. And when they're not slow, they're frail.
Ice types. There weren't any fast ice types for the longest time and they got so many weaknesses that being an "immovable iceberg" ain't an option
or alternatively they have typing like weavile, which despite being really fast is unusable just because it dies so hard to anything
Honestly, ice at least needs an equivalent of solid rock.
@@jaschabull2365 sounds good
If they want to give Ice so many weaknesses, at least give it more resistances than just _itself_. Why can't it resist Grass?
Ice should resist flying and water IMO
I feel like bug ice and posion types only sereve as offensive/coverage moves so aren't pokemon stuck with ass movepools ~fire and electric~ Bug ice and poison types have great attacking moves to use like x-scissor U turn bug buzz for bugs, ice beam ice punch and billzard ice shard, sludge bomb slugs wave posion jab and toxic But when was the last time you used those moves on mons who receive STAB from it? Water types use ice move for ice coverage So many fucking non-bug type can learn those good bug type moves Poison was only good after fairy was introduced in gen 6. If like not every bug type move can be learned by other non-bug type pokemon *perhaps* bug types can see some sort of niche, actually good ice type pokemon, poison hitting more than just grass and fairy so just Maybe?
yeah the wide number mons that can learn poison type moves despite not being poison types really undermines them, same with bug. Fire and electric are kind of one trick ponies in a way, but at least a fire type using fire blast feels good as hell. water types usually get blizzard too, which is just busted
That’s actually the Santo Tomás arrangement man, you late 😪
lmao I didn't know about that, that's really funny
Ice is also odd to me. There's the obvious issues with weaknesses and that the only good ice mons are almost always hyper offense. But why is ice always available so late in the game? Do they just want to save snowy settings for later in the story? Why not have snowy areas earlier on if ice types are going to be as frail as they are?
yeah the unavailability of ice types is really annoying at times, why can't I use snorunt from gym 3 onwards, where is my swinub alt main
It seems pretty clear to me the trouble is that unless you're going to give a region a seasonal cycle, which seems difficult, ice types feel like misfits everywhere but perpetually cold places like high mountains, which really don't have an early-route feel to them, leaving them to get relegated to a way later part of the game than their power level is suitable for.
Poison was just a hinder to have
yeah only serves as weakness and not strength
I hate that GF keeps making slow bulky ice types
they love the uninteresting ice type wall, that's the thing for them now
I guess glaciers are just too tempting an inspiration, even though it really doesn't suit the type's in-game attributes.
@@tortoisecity Chien pao: Be careful for what you wish for.
well yes, you're right. old generations leave a lot to be desired for pokemon movepools. are you talking about competitive formats or in casual play? In the former you use whatever options give you the most success. in single player you can do whatever you want. you can still use pokemon even if they have fewer moves than others. it's just not as easy. I've been playing sapphire, using cacnea (it's not quite evolved) and ninjask, and cackling whenever I ko a grass and/or dark type with pin missile or fury cutter.
tbf I am mostly talking about casual play, which is different, but most of my problem is that not having a decent power move by the time you're in the 50s or 60s is just not that imo, I know that lots of people like to use lower power moves as a challenge and that's legit, but for a casual playthrough it's just a bit disappointing
8:48 this is why stealth rock is so good. I think rock is fascinating as a type because the games introduce rock as a defensive type, when in reality rock types have 5 weaknesses and 4 resistances; the same as Grass type. Meanwhile Rock-type offensive is as good as it gets. No immunities, only 3 resists to cover, and with 4 types weak to it, Rock-type offense outperforms even Ice type moves. So of course GF had to give every last species Stealth Rock and render every rock-type obsolete for years.
I did forget about this, but you're absolutely right that it makes the case for rock types even worse. stealth rock is broken, the fact that many mons can do hazards and poison is nuts
@@tortoisecity and unlike stone edge, SR never checks accuracy.
thank god it never checks accuracy, can't have rock's only competitively useful move missing too
Yeah, it's almost as bad as all the ice-beaming water types, the non-bug U-turners and next to literally everything getting toxic.
