Pokémon Crystal's sound designers warned us about the power of water

Fixing Pokémon's awful color categories

Thanks for watching! This is a follow up video to my last video, which used the Pokédex's data to see whether color correlated to type. I answer that same question again with my own dataset to see if the Pokédex's flawed data skewed the results (and also use better statistical methods). I Played Four Pokemon Demakes. Here's What I Learned.
Gen 2 was eerie in so many ways its weird and hard to explain, like i hope i dont sound crazy but this gen always like creepy but comforting at the same time, like anything could just dissapear at any second, like one thing that always put me off about this generation was the slowpoke in the search menu of the pokedex i remember looking at the animation with the dragons den music in the background and felt uncomfortable but also oddly comfortable, i like gen 2 alot but it was always very interesting to me in ways i often struggle to describe
it's got kind of a spooky vibe to it, lot of myth and legend in the games as well to add to that feeling
It wasn't the water sounds that freaked me out, it was the Legendary Beast theme on Crystal when it suddenly came up that always made my stomach feel funny as a kid. No other sound has ever done that to me! Like you're minding your own business in some random route trying to level up or catch some other Pokemon, then that sudden intro and knowing how hard it is to catch Entei or Raikou and my anxiety went up, lol.
oh yeah that is alarming for the very first time, no idea what's going on
I never had an issue with the Gen 2 water sounds. I couldn't tell why exactly they sound like that but I assumed that's what taking command over huge amount of water sounds like
reasonable interpretation, still spooky
Lmao, I always liked the sound. It makes me think of a dishwasher/washing machine. Water has a really strong harsh sound when forcing it to do work.
that's true, does remind me a bit of hearing the roaring of letting water through a dam wall
The sound effect is kind of loud I guess, but it never bothered me. I did always dislike the Dragon's Den music though; it sounded like banshees wailing. I've heard people say it's their favorite track...
the dragon's den track is definitely an acquired taste, I kind of like it but also can see how you would not
i agree. the power of water is terrifying...
water scary
I always thought it sounded kind of cool and as far as I know, my friends who also played pokemon back then thought nothing of it either. But to each their own.
I do think it's cool, I also think it's jarring, but also if you weren't really paying attention to sound then I can see how it wouldn't leave any impression
🌀🌀🌀
While I can understand where you are coming from, I do not think this is an isolated incident simply because prior to the DS era Pokemon Video Games there were a LOT of limitations in hardware and *also* an evolution in conscious choice for sound design. If you actually look through many move animations and sound effects that have been around from the first three generations of Pokemon you'll notice some of them are almost unrecognizable in later games and shadows of their former selves in latest generation games that still have them included at all. This is because over time the creators saw and learned the need to have more commonplace moves be just that. Commonplace compared to unique and devastating and powerful signature moves that were meant to have more of a bold and dramatic presence. You are right in just that symbolism with the Whirl Islands and waterfall needed to battle Red, your own former self from the original games. That has very bold and dramatic presence. But a lot of things used for events like this are only ever used in their debut and never again because they have to make room for the next generation to have it's proper time in the spotlight. Look at the sound effects for Screech over time. That has a visible reaction that's visceral and it has been toned down over time out of convenience to to the player and conscious choice on the Creator's behalf to make sure that other moves draw more attention and it having meaning. While originally Screech was just overly excessive with how actually painful it was to hear. And then we have always had the Pokémon Anime to take everything from the games and make it more dramatic and have stage presence and be more impactful. Plus some details from moves were just changed over time because originally they were portrayed in ways the developers had no idea how to go about doing so because of lack of experience. For example the move Nightmare was originally quite unsettling and disturbing and while that was the intention it got the nes down until it was eventually removed along with many moves and Pokemon later on in the most recent era of Switch Games. But it always held onto more of it's original scare factor. But did you know that Jynx's signature move Lovely Kiss was originally arguably even more haunting and scary in it's portrayal and animation? There's a reason why that was changed much more immediately and starkly in contrast and almost unrecognizable in how it was portrayed later one. That was immediately seen as necessary by the developers and rightfully so drastically altered to better fit the tone and mood because the creators now had more experience and looked back on it and said "That's not what we meant to do at all! This doesn't look anything like what we were trying to portray with the aesthetic and mood for this! This looks horrible and embarrassing, let's just start all over now that we have a better idea of what we want to make."
I agree, bring back back visceral awful ear bleeding screech sound
Nobody dares to disrespect our dark mother the sea. She can give and take life as she sees fit and we need to be reminded of her power. Praised be our dark mother Lugia. (In all seriousness: great video! I love more out there and obscure takes on pokemon stuff.)
thanks! glad you liked it
Team Aqua grunt spotted
To teach their own, but I suppose that's why many also hate Lavender Town's OST in the original sound front.
yeah lavender sound soundtrack definitely much more maligned than this
Well, on physical GameBoy Speaker it doesn't sound as harsh (I guess it heavily dampens it) and sounds more like (crude approximation) of waves (what other sound would fit here?). As an experiment try passing this sound through low-pass filter (i.e. in Audacity) and set frequency at 7...11kHz (I can't tell which would best approximate this behaviour).
the whole time I was making this I was thinking about putting a 1/1 time attack filter on it, sidechaining to a kick and adding lots of reverb, think it'd sound sick
@@tortoisecity Try it :D As this sound of pure digital sample lacks filtering (also Pokemon Yellow's Pikachu sounded less harsh on original hardware due to same imperfections off speaker which muffled a bit those high pitch parts).
The only two pokemon I really don't like are Luvdisc and Alomomola, and it's at least partly because I feel like Luvdisc completely lacks a purpose. If it evolved into Alomomola, maybe it would have something going for it, but it really just seems like the only reason it exists is for heart scale hunting in gen 3, which is... Well, irrelevant, in short. Alomomola just happens to be the pokemon version of a fish I can't bring myself to respect, even knowing that it fits an ecological niche of managing jellyfish populations.
yeah they're kind of two halves of the not same whole, bit forgettable and pointless all around
This sound, to me, reads as a cascading torrent of water. Given the hardware limitations, it's a more than reasonable approximation of what using the water TMs would sound like. *Maybe* that's a bit unpleasant, but as you said, water is dangerous. Dangerous water won't necessarily sound pretty.
true that water is dangerous, and honestly evoking any kind of visceral emotion using limited hardware is generally a mark of doing something right. I do like that it's visceral, which I probably could have summed up a little more at the end.
I am fascinated by this video in that I always liked this sound effect. Honestly it always reminded me of brushing teeth for some reason.
I can kinda see that, though I'd never thought of it that way - thanks for the comment!
It took almost 3 minutes to get to the main topic of sound design. I feel like the title could be more representative of that
Agreed. Holy mother of word count. Why do we need a definition of HM??
Idk, I liked the beginning
fair points, and this is something I thought about while making it, but generally I like do a bit more scene setting when I am making videos, based on the assumption that A) some people may be interested in the topic, but not have played these games in a long time, or B) might not have played these games at all, and not be familiar with what the moves actually do. Likewise, there may be newer fans out there (since gen 7 came out) that literally don't know what HMs are, or have little familiarity with them. I do also laugh a bit at the mother of word count, given the scale and length of some people's videos (which are fine, but I just don't consider an 8.5 minute particularly long, by any stretch)
@@tortoisecity What I intend to do when I start creating more serious videos is to include a "skip the preamble" timestamp in the description for those who want it. Perhaps something to consider, if you think the commenters have provided a valid criticism!
cool idea and something I may implement, since I am unlikely to stop providing more basic information - thanks for the suggestion!
Lol! Cool takeaway from that sound! And yes, I've honestly loved it: loved that it felt like the rising tide and crashing waves, loved the consistency of it being used across water-related actions (both Surf in battle and the other Water HMs outside of it) and honestly just really loved using Surf both for the animation and this sound.
the surf animation is really cool, they did a great job making the pokemon distort as they're underwater. Thanks for the comment!
how sure are you that this is an "error"
absolutely - as people more familiar with the code have said, the context of the elite four later in the game having incredibly weak IV spreads supports it, while also making no sense for the trainers to get weaker over time.
Do you know what the remakes DID keep? That endless low HP beeping that bleeds my ears every time I play this older games
original concept for this video was going to address that sound as well, but that's for another day, I guess
That's why Gen V is the best.
personally i kind of enjoy the ear rending eternal beeping, but they were probably right to get rid of it
🌊🌊🌊 🌊🌊🌊 🌊🌊🌊
My favourite are the Ace Trainers. They started to utilize a full team and as someone pointed out in a different video, the way they behave they could be the rivals that you would have in a different timeline.
ace trainers are super cool, great to people in the games who are canonically meant to be good at battling and using pokemon other than generic normal type rodents found at the start of the game
The Safari Zone seems insane for what the game expected you to do. You were expected to get three key items in the middle of an area you can only walk five hundred steps before being kicked out and having to pay more money to get back in at the start.
yeah it's a weird area when you think about it like that
PLA best pokedex
oddly enough, not a game I have any interest in playing
Charjabug
definitely some charjabug haters out there
Ironically, the best "Pokédex" imo is the P⭐DA from Colosseum and XD. It lacks flavor text for each Pokémon but is has a whole type matchup chart for each Pokémon and it tells you the species' possible abilities. By far the most useful tool for begginer trainers
super cool - no reason that can't be in all dexes really
All female swimmers in gen 1 were beautys. That's where all the gen1 beautys went, they became female swimmers in the remakes.
ah! that's interesting, thanks for sharing!
@tortoisecity funfact: in Let's Go they go back to being beautys.
quite a faithful remake in some ways
I always liked the Bug Maniacs really doubling down from their catching days and becoming actual experts of insects.
I've always thought that was a cool detail too :)
Interesting analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
thanks! glad you enjoyed it :)
trainer classes are my favorite thing to analyze in pokemon (other than the pokemon themselves), my favorite being the strange trainer line (confirmed by the devs) that being School kid ➡Super Nerd ➡Scientist Very interesting worldbuilding and lore packed onto 3 unplayable characters.
absolutely! they add so much to the world around the player without being a focus, but there's so much to think about there
Isn't Swimmer in every mainline game up until Scarlet and Violet?
yep, kinda odd that they got rid of swimmer for scavi
Very "cool" results! This is just the kind of pkmn vid I love.
happy that you enjoyed it!
"There is always 7" 😂
😂
knew someone would (and should) comment on this lol
I feel like the third versions should be counted as well if the remakes are being counted. They’re just as mainline as the rest of the games, and they change up a decent amount of things, especially in Emerald and B2W2. I feel it’d show a more complete picture of these trends.
there's definitely a case for it and I partially agree, but I did take a cursory look at a few while doing this and a lot of the time there was not a large amount of difference, or they added rematches rather than additional trainers, and it just didn't add much to the analysis overall imo. Might still have been cool to do for completeness though. B2W2 probably the most aggressive example, I think, given it's the most different of them imo.
I feel like grass types aren't discussed enough when talking about how poor type balancing is. While being super effective against water, ground, and rock makes them very useful, they are tied for most weaknesses and most types that resist their moves.
yeah they're really just not that great, though people love ragging on specific grass combos (Celebi comes to mind)
@ oh yeah, completely forgot that half of the other types become 4x weak when paired with grass. It’s too bad, I really love grass type Pokemon, and I still hold on to the vain hope that they’ll get a buff.
maybe some day, though it doesn't seem likely considering pokemon hates rebalancing types
I love how color coded and neat your charts are!
thanks!
Thank you GPT
the only thing GPT helps with is teaching me to use spreadsheets (it is in my experience really really bad at gathering data for pokemon specifically)
We love your 20 + minute videos ❤
glad someone does, though they're few and far in between
The Hunter and Chaser trainer classes from Colo/XD are my favorite. Their names give so much potential worldbuilding as to how people perceive Pokemon or each other, almost like how the Rocket Grunts used whips in Gen I. Also their designs are awesome
they're designs are pretty sick
I love the Orre trainer classes though. They are so random and funny, and don’t even have a specific type of Pokémon they use, unlike the main series. The Street Performer is one of my favorites, she’s so cute!
Let us not forget the classes such as “Bandana Guy” and “Fun Old Man”
undoubtedly XD and Colo have some really cool stuff in them, but I feel like they're different enough in nature that it's not necessarily like-for-like in comparison
Great topic!
glad you enjoyed!
Hex Maniac
true, people do love the hex maniac
Beauty from x/y is hot tho
well
Even in the anime they avoided this region and took the bicycle bridge.
sensible folks
I was surprised to hear Bruxish was hated. I always thought it's a fun Pokemon
we found em, the bruxish fan, always knew there'd be one
I am personally extremely contrarian, and _Lucario_ used to be my least favorite Pokémon until Gen 9, where it was replaced by Ceruledge and Armarouge. I'm not really a fan of people who deride some Pokémon as “not looking like Pokémon” - most Pokémon are actually quite Pokémon-like -, but these two _genuinely_ do not look like Pokémon to me, but just generic unoriginal humanoids. Gen 9, design-wise, was weird - most of the Pokémon designs that had been showcased in the trailers were ones I didn't quite like, so I was going into the generation thinking that I wouldn't like most new designs. And then I saw Pokémon with great designs like Kilowattrel or Lokix. Gen 9 has genuinely amazing desings, and I don't know why they didn't showcase those in the trailers. Did they want to leave the good ones as a surprise? On the topic of Gen 9; Espathra is also a Pokémon I dislike, but it's simply due to personal experiences with it - when I first saw it, I thought it was a steel-type for some reason, so I sent out my Breloom... which promptly went down from a psychic attack. I know it's a dumb anecdote, but it left a sore aftertaste, haha, which is why I can't bring myself to like Espathra. Which is strange, because otherwise I like all other bird mons, they're among my favorites. Anyways, I still hate Lucario, though. And, on similar grounds, I also heavily dislike Gardevoir. Most other popular Pokémon, though, I'm either neutral on, or actively like (yes, even Charizard from KANTOOOO). Apart from those, though, I actually don't actively hate any Pokémon. While they're not my favorites, I still can see the appeal behind objectmons.
I've seen this kind of criticism quite a lot - some people seem to take some umbrage if a pokemon is humanoid in any way, which I think is fine, but you're certainly not alone
@@tortoisecity I'm actually perfectly fine with humanoid Pokémon. Some of them - like Machamp, for example - are among my favorites, as well. It's just Ceruledge and Armarouge that really don't vibe well with me for some reason.
fair enough!
It's not my favorite of the Ultra Beast but I love the irony of Pheromosa's design. They take a cockroach which is one of the grossest animals and they make it elegant and clean which is a complete reversal of their perception. This helps to further establish it's extradimensional nature. Overall I think Pheromosa has a very clever design and concept.
I'm heartened by all of the love for pheromosa in the comments, been really positive
I shan’t tolerate garbodor slander
absolutely not
Chairman Rose
not a pokemon but no one likes him
Quaxwell
nah anything that is a starter gets sold as a plushy, and that endears people
I am not a fan of gen 5 Pokémon. Not universally, there are some I like, like the Sandile line, but many I consider cheap copies of original Pokémon, that would never even be made if Game Freak did not have that stupid idea to only use new Pokémon. I mean, do you really think Reggerola would be made if they used Geodude in Gen 5? Or Woobat if they used Zubat? Or Timburr if they used Machop? Or Purloin if they used Poochyena? And I can go on and on and on about Pokémon that are just copies of previous Pokémon. But then again, I can't tell I hate most of them. I just think they only exist because of a stupid decision on Game Freak's side. And then, even if I hate Pokémon when first introduced, I can get over it when I actually play with it. Happened to me with Scraggy and Scrafty. Those were the first dark type Pokémon I actually hated. And hated everything about them. Their design, their typing, their stats. Fighting type Pokémon with better defense than attack? There's no way that's gonna work. So I ignored that Pokémon for years until I put it in my team in Shield when I did dark monotype challenge. And man was I surprised how well it worked. It even saved me in some battles. So, now, while I can't tell I love Scraggy line, I don't hate it anymore and am willing to use it when needed. So, yeah, my morale from this is: don't hate Pokémon just because of its look or stats. Play with it and then you may change your opinion on it, just like I changed my opinion on Scraggy. Though, I doubt I will ever change my mind on the Alola Starters. Those are the weakest set of starters by looks, types and stats. Especially stats. I was happy to replace Incineroar with shiny Houndoom in US and never looked back 😜
I think you're right that actually using pokemon makes it very easy to become endeared to them over time - not sure I agree about the gen 5 mons, but agree some of them are pretty derivative of other pokemon, though not specific to gen 5
