You can purchase "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" (TYC) through Amazon. The authors recommend four prerequisite skills a child will need before beginning TYC instruction: show interest in learning to read; be able to listen, understand, and follow simple spoken English instructions; be able to speak in complete sentences; and sustain working on a task for more than a few minutes.

1:34 Does anyone have advice on how to approach "a"? The sound aaaaaaa as she says in the video makes sense for "apple" and "at", but I'm struggling to produce the same consistent sound when saying words like "am" or "and".

So nice to see someone else say this. We just started this book and having so much trouble with "am" - I never thought I had an accent but I definitely say am much differently than apple for the A's. It's making it harder for my 5 yr old but we're both practicing together

@@susansyverud7950 thank you for responding and sharing the video. I watched it and I’m still a bit confused. I hear the “a” as in “Apple” sound during the slow sounding out, but as soon as the child speeds up the word “man” I don’t hear the “a” in the same way. The book has been really great otherwise and we’re making progress, I’m just trying to make sure I’m not confusing my student. If there are any other videos you would recommend, I’d love to educate myself.

RUclips says your comment has some replies already but it won't show me what they are. This exact question is what prompted me to search for pronunciation videos and I guess I'm going to just go with "ah" as in apple since that's what she says in this video. I also have sat here for 5-10 minutes saying "and" trying to make that sound and it's just not working out for me. I don't really have any sort of accent so I'm not sure what the issue is. Maybe "and" was just a poor choice of example word?

My mother was a brilliant educator. She actually used me as a guinea pig in the early 70s. I was barely out of infancy and I learned to speak and read at an outrageously early age thanks to this method. I was never a whiny child, she said. I was too busy reading, playing music and making friends! I recall that she had large text books with letters on each page. That vision is imprinted in my mind. I have a cassette tape somewhere also of one of our lessons in 1973 when I was two years old.

First let me send a Giant Thank You to the Authors! I bought this book in 1986 when my first daughter was 1 year old. I realized that the parent has to be willing & dedicated in using this material. I had started my children learning to read at about 1 month old by making big flashcards with everyday words. So it was not very long that my children (2 yrs.old) were reading on 3rd & 4th grade level with th the instruction given In this book. I have recommended this book to over 100 parents and again today. This book Is still the best to teach children to read! What is really Awesome, the co-author has a website that gives parents lessons, Videos and supplemental material; this makes it so much easier and motivating for the parents. I wish this existed when I started out!
